Done in a very piecemeal fashion, this is little more than a collection of tidbits you've seen elsewhere if you're well read. Don't know if it was just the kindle edition, but lots of typos. The prose, such as it is, is barely sufficient to tie things together,and leaves a reader wanting more substance and passion. Barely engaging is how I'd put it succinctly.

A fun, if light, read

The book starts off with an ambitious purpose of trying to show the reader of some examples of how our current social order is completely and utterly messed up, and in some ways how to fix it. after the first few chapters, the book rapidly leaves that purpose and leaves us with some interesting anecdotes on some current issues (see the chapter on housing in SF, great anecdotes but no real discussion of the underlying causes of the housing shortage). A fun read overall, but doesn't quite support the price of the book.

To the authors, you had a great premise, and it looks like you had fun telling the stories, but left out analysis and conclusions as the book went on. Put in the effort, add a few more pages per chapter and the book becomes that much more compelling.

Some of the authors are significantly stronger writers than others. The lack of consistency and frequent repetition makes the read unpleasant, though still informative.

Wake Up & Read This Book

What's interesting about this book is it shows how we sleep walk our way through many of the contradictions in our world without questioning them. This book not only has great answers to those conflicts but most importantly has questions that most of us subconsciously never even give a second thought about. Great stuff!

It's ok. It covers many interesting subjects, and others not so interesting. It also makes a huge emphasis on United States circumstances that are not at all similar to the rest of the world, so it is not that compelling for somebody living in Europe, for example.

The introduction really had me pulled into it.

The only chapters which dragged on and over explained was when the author goes on and on about seals. It's just not interesting to me - but I guess thats just a bias.

Overall though, I recommend this book. A lot of it was common sense for me but its great to have the facts behind the concepts.

Interesting Read

I like the premise of this book. The idea driving the writing was to illuminate different aspects of our life and bring to light the reasons they exist, for example; why do we give diamond engagement rings, why do we wear deodorant, where is the value in art. While several sections of this book were quite interesting ( the aforementioned diamond section, the chapter on wine, air fresheners) I found the middle part of the book rather boring and skipped through it, I can't even tell you what it was about without looking.

I'm still glad I purchased this book. The parts I liked were interesting enough to keep me reading and even discuss what I read with co workers.

All in all, I would recommend the book to those who, like me, like gathering information.

I am enjoyed what I read of this book. I bought the kindle edition and there are pages missing, numbered incorrectly and overwrites from one page to another. I thought it would be more interesting.
