Product Description

Never has humble paper had such radical ambitions.

Defying every expectation of what a book can be, this pop-up extravaganza transforms into six fully functional tools. Artist Kelli Anderson contributes enlightening text alongside each pop-up, explaining the scientific principles at play in her constructions and creating an interactive experience that's as educational as it is extraordinary. Inspiring awe that lasts long after the initial pop, This Book Is a Planetarium leaves readers of all ages with a renewed appreciation for the way things work—and for the enduring magic of books.

This Book is a Planetarium is an interactive book for adults and kids that turns into:
  • A working planetarium book projecting constellations on the ceilings and walls
  • A musical instrument with strings to strum
  • A geometric drawing generator
  • An infinite calendar
  • A message decoder
  • A speaker that amplifies sound
If you've enjoyed Matthew Reinhart's A Pop-Up Book of Nursery Rhymes and Robert Sabuda's Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs: The Definitive Pop-Up, then you'll love This Book is a Planetarium.

As impossible as it seems, this brilliant book allows its reader to manipulate scientific concepts like light, sound, time, and space. It provides teachers, parents, grandparents, librarians, children and unaccompanied adults the opportunity to play and learn without pain. Each person who makes up a secret code, or creates kaleidoscopic art using the spirograph, or figures out which day birthdays will be three years hence, or projects accurate constellations onto the ceiling, cannot help but be entranced! The book's vivid colors are beautiful. The paper pop-ups are sturdy. And, the reader is treated to concise explanations matching these ingenious inventions. It is a great buy for active thinkers, though it requires a smartphone or a flashlight, plus pens and blank paper, to fully enjoy all of the contraptions within. This "doing" book is perfect for use in independent learning centers, or for grandparents to share with grandchildren, or as a teaching tool in science or design classrooms. It is an irresistible treat for all ages.

Just arrived. Outstanding, beautifully captured the science of sound, cryptography, time, the universe, and geometry all through the art of paper. Cudoos to author. Worth the wait. Taking the book to work tomorrow to share with others before sending to my neice.

This book is SO COOL. Its incredible. When I opened it up I actually said out loud "how did they make this?" The construction is sturdy and well-made, and its clear that there was a lot of attention to detail. It's unlike any pop-up book I have ever seen.

This book is NOT a planitarium

They need to change the title of this book to something that accurately describes this book.

Poor construction on all "pop-ups". Spiraling doesn't work. Speaker is made of flimsy paper and can't be made round as the instructions instruct. VERY disappointed. Had I seen this in a bookstore without the wrapping I would not have bought. Not worth the money, at all.

My kid's favourite parts are the string instrument, the spiro graphs, and the planetarium! He'll grow to love it more as he ages. (He recently turned 4.)
