A New York Times Best Seller!
An Amazon Best Book of the Month!

A "raucous trip through the odd corners of our alphabet." ―The New York Times

Let's get real―the English language is bizarre. A might be for apple, but it's also for aisle and aeons. Why does the word "gnat" start with a G but the word "knot" doesn't start with an N? It doesn't always make sense, but don't let these rule-breaking silent letters defeat you!

This whimsical, funky book from Raj Haldar (aka rapper Lushlife) turns the traditional idea of an alphabet book on its head, poking fun at the most mischievous words in the English language and demonstrating how to pronounce them. Fun and informative for word nerds of all ages!

Cute idea, but contains Ouija boards
by Shawn A Lodico (2 out of 5 stars)
November 26, 2018

Loved the idea. However it uses Ouija boards for "O", with matching illustrations and description. There is no way to have known about this subject matter when I ordered, I was startled to see it in a children's alphabet book. So I wanted to write a review sharing this information for other christian families who avoid such things. I'll be returning the book.

Funny book - contains Ouija board page
by Rachel Puuri (2 out of 5 stars)
December 1, 2018

The overall idea is hilarious, and I bought three as gifts for my nephews. However, I didn't know it contained "O is for Ouija" before I purchased the book. In my opinion, I don't think that content is appropriate for kids, so I returned all three copies. I would have kept them if that page was on another topic, so if it doesn't bother you, then you'll likely enjoy this book.

Finally an alphabet that highlights English spelling foolishness!
by Steve Barber (5 out of 5 stars)
November 17, 2018

I've long thought that the poor correlation of the sound of English words to their spelling needed to be highlighted. This humorous book does a great job of lampooning word initial sounds versus word initial letters. It should be a required textbook for all ESL classes!

BEST children's book ever!
by J (5 out of 5 stars)
November 14, 2018

This book is hilarious!! What a great way to make kids feel good about learning! It shows you that language is hard and encourages you to laugh about the hard stuff and not feel bad that it's hard. Teaching kids with humor - who'dha thunk it works?! Buy one for every child and adult on your list. You will officially be the coolest gift giver ever.

Would have been great except for occult references (Ouija, psychic, witch)
by Kerriann (1 out of 5 stars)
December 12, 2018

I was so excited about this book that I pre-ordered it, and had no way of knowing what was inside. I was heartbroken that it mentions a Ouija board in a lighthearted, jovial manner (not like a dictionary which simply tells what it is), while a French man says "oui, oui," to a witch, that he'd love to play the Ouija board with her. Also, the pterodactyl is a psychic - again, no way of knowing this without actually seeing the book. I returned it.

Funny and educational
by Mike (5 out of 5 stars)
December 4, 2018

This book was a hoot to read. Even as a college grad there were new words for me to learn. In the back was a dictionary of the new words, how to say them, and what they meant. Great for adults as a laugh or for children to learn so of the quirks of the English language.

Great book for all ages

Great book! My kids love it 7 and 11. Encourages conversation about the words used in the book. Fantastic illustration. Both kids took the book to school and their teachers loved it! Highly recommend. Planning on giving a few as gifts. Great book for all ages.

Good purchase even if you don't have kids
by Tim Wecks (5 out of 5 stars)

I worried this would be a great idea badly executed, but they really delivered a good book and put effort into it instead of just phoning it in. It's worth the money just for the novelty, but it does actually help my 9 year old with silent letters too

Are they really complaining about the "O" page!?!? *chuckling*
by Chris Pulvermacher (5 out of 5 stars)
March 31, 2019

First of all, if you want to see every page in a book go to the library, or bookstore to check it out. Perhaps you could even support your local community book seller for a change.

Secondly, instead of sitting around thinking of the most ridiculous first world problems you can. Maybe you could try to help with a real issue like hmmm IDK clean drinking water for Flint, gender discrimination for women in the workplace, global warming, the US educational system, etc, etc.

Third and my last. I hope nobody that complained about the Ouija Board page celebrates the Pagan Holidays Easter & Christmas (and many more) or even thinks about sending their kids trick or treating! but then again, you're probably THOSE types of Christians......

This book is really hilarious! My friend and I laughed like school children. I had to look up a few of the words for pronunciation which was fun. Also I really like the illustrations.

5 year old loves it!

Hilarious book! Love that they use ouija board for "O". If a board game offends you, then you are what's wrong with this world!
