HUGE Patio - and MAYBE entire driveway! Love these!
by TomP (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought a few of these so that I can stamp out multiple sections at a time. I started a project 1 year ago and spent 1 month on it and completed a large section. I will continue this year with the project. The great thing is that you can stop anywhere you like AND THEN just continue next time by just butting up the form where you last left off.

When I am done with ALL of the concrete work, I plan on pressure washing everything and then using a spray on semi transparent stain. THEN I plan on mixing up a huge load of mortar (leave it white, the stones will be blue-gray) and pour it on and squeegee it into all of the stone cracks - YES even into the imperfections on the surface. I want this to look just like a genuine Italian high-class stone and mortar old world finish. FINALLY, I will get the clear concrete sealer, shiny, and cover everything with a few coats. Lots of work but SUPER INCREDIBLE looking! Check out the tons of pics of my project SO FAR.

Love the look, highly recommend

I get to write the review...my husband did all the work though ;) A lot of people said that they sprayed the form with Pam spray before each use and he did do that the first time but it really didn't make a difference, just spray it with water before and in-between each setting and you'll have no problem. Also, 80 pounds of cement does about 1 1/3 of the form so adjust your purchase accordingly. My husband only waited about 5 minutes before lifting the form just to make sure that it was set. We picked up an electric cement mixer on craigslist for $75 (which you can buy new for $150) which was a lifesaver! We only used one form but there were times we wished we had two because we always had the mixer running and had plenty of cement ready. You can pick up the form at Lowe's for a lot less, which we didn't know but that was our fault for not looking into it more. Much cheaper than using pavers, more beautiful too! Hard on my husbands back though, lots of lifting bags of cement and stooping over the form. The form is very sturdy and you will be able to use it again and again, or loan out to your friends and family without worrying about it breaking. The stones can be moves around a little if you don't like the spacing. We spaced some on a hill so that we could plant steppable ground cover between them. Took my husband 3 days (2 very full days and one shorter day) to complete a large area. Now to finish the rest of the yard...my job! total cost so far with form is $160.

I think it looks signficiantly better being 4 feet wide instead of a narrow 2 ...

First time concrete-er and decided to use this mold to create about a 50 foot front walkway to my house. I elected to try the dual-width walkway method which gives you a 4 foot wide walkway instead of 2. The main disadvantage to the dual-width method, besides the extra work, is added difficulty making it "turn". If you can do it right, though, I think it looks signficiantly better being 4 feet wide instead of a narrow 2 foot path.

Some notable things I learned:
-You do not need to buy the 80 pound bags like it says on the instructions. The form actually takes a little less than one 60 pound bag of correctly mixed quickrete, even after packing it in very tightly.
-For a big job, setup a station next to your walkway and do a little bit each day. It's quite tiring to do even 2 to 4 of these molds correctly in a single session. The most I did in a long full day of work was about 12 molds. I was mixing the concrete by hand, then spending a solid 15-20 minutes per mold packing the conrete into every nook and cranny, then cleaning up. Overall I averaged about 1 hour per day doing 2 molds side-to-side and slowly got the job done.
-The instructions for "turning" your walkway are complete garbage. They instruct you to just turn and push the mold down onto the one you just did and fill in the gaps. If mixing your concrete right, it will be quite solid already in the form when you lift the mold away, even after just 15 minutes. So I found it nearly impossible to push down at all onto a previous mold, let alone not having it end up looking crumbly and messy. Also, this method of turning simple won't work for dual-width walkways like mine, the geometry doesn't really work out if you think about it.
-My method for "turning" the walkway worked pretty well. Basically, just slowly stop filling in the mold on one side and start partially filling in another mold on the opposite side. You may be limited to 90 degree turns for the most part, though, which is all I needed.

Buy some thick rubber gloves to hand-pack in the concrete into the mold. It is much easier than trying to use a trowel.
-The mold results in some pretty large gaps between the pavers. Some of mine were up to 1/2 inch gaps. This results in the stones being quite wobbly until you lock them in place with the polymeric sand. It's expensive sand, but highly recommended to make the walkway feel solid, and it obviously looks better.
-If you are doing the dual-width walkway, buying two of these molds will not make it go any faster, unless you have a second person in theory.

Overall I highly recommend the mold. It's a lot of work but you end up saving up to thousands of dollars.

Worth it (?)

I gave this 5 stars because it does what it's supposed to do. My only experience with this sort of thing is being a plaster hod carrier in my youth, so I'm a rookie. I want to pass along some instruction issues.
First, it states 1 80 lb. bag of cement per square. I'm getting 3 bags per 4 squares. Adjust your cement purchase. No fun returning 80 lb. bags. Second, it says 2.5 qt. of water per bag. I found this to be way too dry. Add another qt. and it's smoother and easier to work with.
Spraying the form with Pam helps for a smoother finish and releases easier. Also, lift one side of the form to release before removing it. Lifting straight up caused some sticking of the cement. If you need a partial square like I did, make a square to take apart and set in place. I used a coffee can to add the cement to the form. It proved to be easier than a shovel.
I read one review that said it was "fun and easy to use". Maybe my age and tendency towards laziness and being anal about the finished product (bad combination), I missed the fun and easy part. A cement mixer would be nice instead of mixing in a wheel barrel.
Anyway, as I sit here waiting for the Aleve to kick in, I'm as happy with the finished product as I am with the fact it's done. Would recommend this product to anyone.

This form worked great for us

This form worked great for us! Be sure to wash between uses to keep concrete from drying on it, and this will last thru many projects! This small form made it easy for my husband to start/stop the project, working just an hour or two after work when he had time.

OMG... once you start using this thing, just know that you're going to find places you never even thought of to run walkways to. Takes about 65-70 pounds of concrete PER FORM. If you're planning a walkway, I highly recommend going to your preferred home improvement store and have them DELIVER the concrete to your house. This form works great as long as you rinse it off between uses. I've heard people suggesting pam or non-stick coatings.. I had no need for such things. Just make sure you give the concrete about 5 minutes to soft-set before you lift the form off and you should be good to go. I speak from experience as I ran through about 5000 pounds of concrete through the single mold that I purchased.

Go for it!

Excellent purchase, you wont regret it. I recommend using a wet sponge approximately 30 min to an hour after removing the mold to smooth out the surfaces and remove rough edges. After making sure the mold is packed with concrete don't waste you're time trying to make it perfect it's best to do any finishing after the mold is removed and the concrete hes begun to set. Also, if you purchase more than one mold for your project remember to stagger you're rows of you want to keep the gaps even don't lay them side by side at the same time or else youll have bigger gaps where the two molds meet.

Simple to use, and works great

Works just like pictured, and FAST! Just pour the concrete right over the grass, where you put the mold down in place.

We did a "stone" walkway through our yard with this and 3 months later, it looks like it's been there for years, Grass grows right up between the segments of the blocks, looks completely natural.

Easy to work with

The mold was very accurate and easy to work with. 1 tip is DO NOT USE QUICK CONCRETE it is more rocky and does not smooth out. I used 60lb bags and used extra water to make it smoother. Each bag was able to do 1 and a half molds.

I would not recommend the Quikrete liquid color though, the Lowes powder color was more vibrant. We made molds in different colors than manually moved them to create this effect.

Works....

The idea behind this is great, and it brings masonry to the DIY people. However, the directions on the mixing can be clearer, and also be careful when mixing in varying temperatures and be conscious of where the sun is during the molding. So it's not so much the directions within the product, but the directions with the concrete mix you buy. I went with the QuickCrete, and found a more watery slurry works better than the directions recommend. Also there are some great YouTube videos out there that show an interesting way to double your concrete with some dish soap, and also keep a consistent coloring.
