Contents Are NOT What's Shown & Described
by Bruce E. Layne (3 out of 5 stars)

I have a love/hate relationship with Otis. Their products are innovative and well made, but I never know what I'm going to receive. They keep changing their products. Maybe Otis is an engineering based company and they engage in continuous quality improvement. Maybe they're a marketing based company and they keep changing things in an attempt to appeal to some subtle difference in their perceived market. Maybe it's a bit of both, but from my perspective they can't agree about what is in a cleaning kit and they ship whatever they had that day. There were significant differences between what was advertised and what I received. The original tamper evident packaging was intact, so Otis shipped it this way.

As of 29SEP17, here is what's ACTUALLY in the cleaning kit.

Small diameter 34" long cable (8-32 female threads on both ends)

Medium diameter 30" long cable (patch puller on one end, female threads for .17 brush other end)

Six brushes (see the image I included for the sizes, all 8-32 male thread)
3 screw-on patch pullers of varying sizes (8-32 male thread)
2 screw-on T handle adapters, large/small (also used to tap out bore obstructions, 8-32 male thread)
1 tapered T handle rod
1 Orange chamber flag and bore inspection tool
1 small tube of BIO cleaner lubricant and protectant
8-32 threaded rod (male to female adapter)
16-12-10 gauge patch plug
28-20-16 gauge patch plug

Small stack of Otis patches

Shown in the picture and in the product description that was NOT included:
8" pistol length cable

Shotgun brush threaded adapter

Small brass threaded adapter (possibly 8-32 male and .17 brush female threads)

Included but different from what was shown/described:

The Otis cleaner/lubricant/protectant is now a BIO version, presumably with less nasty petrochemicals. I haven't tried it, but that may be an improvement. The previous Otis CLP didn't smell as bad as most harsh bore solvents but it was still not healthy. The package still bears the warning for the petroleum solvent version and warns not to get it on your skin. I spilled the original Otis CLP on my hand and I tasted something like kerosene in my mouth a few minutes later, so apparently it contains very polar substances that cross into the bloodstream.

The smaller diameter cable that's used for cleaning .17 and .22 did not have the 8-32 female thread on either end. The picture shows both ends threaded so a brush or patch puller can be used on one end and the T handle adapter can be used on the other end. That's what I wanted. But no. We're back to the cable that's used in the Otis small caliber cleaning kit. I previously bought one of those little kits just to get the cable to replace one that I wore out, cursed when it had no 8-32 end, tossed it into the shooting junk box, and then a year later I forgot and did it again! This time I double checked but they sent the dreaded useless cable again, so now I have three cables that I don't use. The threaded end on the cable they sent is smaller than 8-32, as used for a .17 brush, but there is nothing in this entire kit that fits that smaller thread.

The 12 gauge brush that Otis supplies uses the standard pistol and rifle 8-32 thread, which is nice, but that's not the shotgun standard. If you buy a 12 gauge brush other than Otis, you'll need a threaded adapter.

CONCLUSION: I can't trust Otis to ship what's advertised. From previous experience, I knew better than to buy a kit and hope to get what I wanted. I mostly just wanted the three cables and the kit was the same price, but I only got one of the three cables that were advertised, so I basically paid $30 for one cable. I prefer to use a cable with Montana Extreme nylon brushes that won't dissolve in copper bore cleaner while continuing to show blue patches so I can't tell when the copper is out of a rifle bore. I prefer to wrap Hoppes Sontara synthetic patches around the nylon brushes to form a cylindrical swab, rather than trying to fold and then untie the Otis proprietary too-clever-by-half patches to form a small cone with limited surface area for cleaning. I prefer Bore Tech solvent and RemOil instead of any cleaner-lubricant-protectant with the compromises inherent in a universal product. I prefer a small Plano tackle box to the Otis kit that's mostly bulky packaging for a few components. Having a place for each item looks organized and can be a good way to avoid losing things because there's an obvious hole where something should be, but there is a lot of fiddling trying to poke the little parts into their niches. It's faster and easier to have a tiny divided tackle box with all the brushes in one compartment. A small hard plastic tackle box isn't much larger than the Otis kit but has a LOT more usable space. The Otis kit also has no room for expansion. All of that obsessive compulsive tidiness is destroyed as soon as you need to make the slightest deviation from their kit. From now on, I'm going to pay the higher price for the single Otis replacement cables and hope that Otis actually sens the cable that's advertised. Everything I've bought from Otis has been of excellent quality, but I never know what I'm going to get, and it's usually not what's advertised and it's not what I want.

Pros and Cons + an interesting oversight
by Aidan (4 out of 5 stars)

Overall I am satisfied with this kit, and would recommend it. There are some definite pros and cons to consider below.

Pros:
-The system is well designed. I personally find the Otis system to be a perfect marriage between a boresnake and a traditional rod. I feel that I am getting the cleaning capability and modularity of a rod with the convenience, portability and idiot-proof usability of a snake.
-The actual packaging of the products is very well thought out. I am impressed with how compact the bag is, considering that it truly does contain everything you need to clean the bore of many different weapons.
-It works. Despite all the Cons I am about to list, the fact is I am entirely satisfied with this kit and plan to continue using it for the foreseeable future.

Cons:
-While the components of the kit are acceptable quality, the case itself is a little shoddy. On the first day I broke a few non-essential plastic insert pieces with normal use. I would not be surprised if the internal structure of the case falls apart.
-As the most popular review of this product states, there are limitations to which bores this kit will clean. See the top review for more details.
-I have found that the patches are not very impressive quality. For all the talk, (and the admittedly clever folding system, which does work well), the patches are thin and leave a little lint.
-My last, and probably most significant concern is simply with the competency of Otis as a manufacturer. At the time of my purchase, they advertise size #35 and #38 brushes. You will notice that they include .380, 9mm, and 38 special in size #38, and .357 in size #35. While to they layman this makes sense, any serious shooter will recognize that this is non-nonsensical. The diameter of .38 special bullets is exactly the same as .357 bullets (which is why you can shoot .38 specials out of a gun chambered for .357 magnum), and .380 and 9mm bullets are actually slightly smaller, measuring in at .355".

I emailed Otis about this discrepancy, and to their credit, they were gracious in admitting their error and promised to correct their website at once. It still begs the question though, have they been sizing their brushes incorrectly this whole time?) They seem to work fine, but its a little concerning.

Other potentially relevant information:

My kit came with about 30 patches, 15 for big bore and 15 for .22 and smaller.

I purchased this a few months ago and just had ...
by Mike (2 out of 5 stars)
October 14, 2017

I purchased this a few months ago and just had the opportunity to open it now to use after a range trip. To my surprise, there were only TWO cables in here (whereas the picture shows three). It appears that Otis did not include the small (8in) cable that was supposed to be part of this sealed package.

Aside from that, the cleaning system doesn't appear to work that well. Cleaning the barrel of my 12g shotgun didn't work that well as the black plug that you're supposed to use became dislodged (alongside the patch) in the barrel. A frustrating amount of time was spent using a cleaning rod to unjam this obstruction from my barrel. Ironic how I had to use my cleaning rod (which was supposed to be replaced by this Otis kit) to fix the issue.

For my AR15 (556), the system works okay with the small patches; however, at the end of each pull, the patch is barely hanging onto the cable which may lead to another obstruction I would have to fix with my cleaning rod. And yes, I followed the instructions on the guide on how to fold and loop the patch. This otis patch system doesn't inspire much confidence at all.

As for my handgun...I couldn't clean it because Otis did not include the small cable that was supposed to be part of my kit. Unfortunately, it is already beyond the 30-day return window.

To sum it up, I bought this kit to replace my existing tools and cleaning rods. In the end, I ended up reusing my old tools to clean my firearms because this system just didn't work. Not only did I not receive a cable (which was supposed to be included), but the patch system does not work well and has led to many issues. I'll try to incorporate this kit into my routine somehow (since it was expensive), but overall I am very unsatisfied.

I guess two out of three ain't bad
by c.Burke (3 out of 5 stars)

I was thoroughly impressed with the speedy delivery of the product. I received the product in less than forty eight hours after purchase, thanks Amazon! However, I do have to say that upon receiving this product I was kind of disappointed. I bought this particular firearms cleaning kit in the hopes that it would be a one size fits all, cost effective fix. I was falsely led to believe by the several posts in the Q&A section regarding the products many features, that this cleaning kit possessed the features and utensils necessary to appropriately clean my 9mm pistol, my AR 15, and my 12 Gage shotgun. What I discovered upon receipt, was that although it is capable of cleaning a wide variety of firearms, including my 9mm pistol and my 12 Gage shotgun, this cleaning kit lacked the necessary utensils that I needed in order to appropriately clean my AR 15. Which in turn, required me to purchase yet another firearms cleaning kit altogether. With that said it does have the ability to clean two out of three of my firearms and I guess that's not bad. To avoid further confusion on the customer's part, I suggest that it be noted in the product details section, each utensil that is featured in the kit, by number and what firearms it's supposed to be compatible with! As it does in the little folded up booklet that comes with the kit itself!

This is the best cleaning kit in its class
by Michael Wight (5 out of 5 stars)
February 12, 2018

This is the best cleaning kit in its class. I've cleaned every gun I own with it. I recommend doing some research into cleaning solutions and oil to make sure you're using what's best for your gun, but as far as hardware goes, this is all you need. DON'T BUY RODS, they mess up your barrel. Pull systems like this are much better for the longevity of the gun. Everything fits so compact in this kit, you can throw it in your ammo box and do a brief cleaning right at the range, or bust everything out and go wild on a deep cleaning at home. The price for the quality is astounding. I've already referred 3 friends to buy this product, and I bought one for my brother for Christmas. I've used it more than 20 times, and waited to write this review until I knew I'd run it through the ringer. It checks out. But it.

One kit does it all
by JMReviewer (5 out of 5 stars)
February 19, 2018

This kit is as described. At first I thought I was like some of the other reviewers who claimed they didn't get what was stated. Mine came in a very nice hard plastic clamshell, that didn't quite look like the soft pack in the picture... that was, until I opened it and realized that the soft pack was inside the hard clamshell. I actually am keeping mine in the hard plastic container it came in - I like the sturdiness and structure.

Mine came with the three coated cables, the brushes, pulls, a bio-derived CLP, etc. No complaints.

The .17/.22 cable is a great thing to have in there - that's part of the reason I bought this one... getting some oil down the barrel of my .22 when storing it is something that was key to me, and without having to buy a different kit. This one really does it all. It won't replace high quality coated rods, bore tech and Dewey type parts for top notch care. But over cleaning can cause as much damage as no care. This is a good intermediate care product that is compact, well made (in the USA) and good quality.

Almost perfect
by 1OAK (4 out of 5 stars)
February 27, 2018

I really like this kit. It is small easy to store and easy to use, but it will not work with my 22lr revolver. The brush is too long to fit in space where the cylinder goes. Since this kit requires you to pull the brush through the barrel rather than push it, the fact that the brush is too long prevents getting the brush in the barrel to pull it through. I call Otis and they were wonderful, and sent me a smaller brush that was to be used with the cable for the .17 caliber guns, but the brush was still too long. Other than that, it works great for rifles and semi-auto pistols of any and all calibers. I much prefer it to traditional cleaning kits, and it would have been perfect if it had worked on my 22lr revolver.

Really disappointed, wish I could contact the seller
by DeeGee (2 out of 5 stars)
June 13, 2016

There does not seem to be a way to contact the seller so I"ll just leave my feedback here and hope for a response. It is a compact package and probably covers many types and sizes of gun. I wanted it so I could clean my 20ga and .410 shotguns, and my S&W SW22 pistol and my Henry lever action 22 rifle.

First of all, the product video indicates that it comes with a shotgun brush adaptor. Mind did not come with one. It also indicates that it comes with a NATO adaptor. Mine did not come with one. It says it cleans all sizes of shotgun. Mine does not have a .410 brush.

As far as the .22's go, the length of the brush or swab holder is too long and I'm unable to clean either of my .22's. I can do it with the tiny swab holder that is permanently attached to a cable. I'm not sure what size gun that's intended for as the directions are really really poor. Even so, there's no way to use a brush on my 22's, so I"ll need to buy another cleaning kit.

In the end, this was a wast of almost $40 for me. If you purchase this, make sure you know exactly what you want it for. I would think it's best for a compact kit to take in the field with you for a quick clean.

The swabs are easy to figure out if you follow the directions on various youtube videos. I think it would be a pain to use square swabs as you would have to punch a hole and the ultimate shape would not really work well, so be prepared to use only Otis swabs or make round ones yourself (not that difficult).

Didn't work for my 5.56/.223, other than that pretty happy.
by Brian D. (4 out of 5 stars)
March 17, 2018

I'm torn on this one -- it's a pretty good cleaning kit, but the main firearm I purchased it for is a 5.56/.223. The description clearly states that caliber is supported, but none of the bore brushes fit properly. Yes, I followed the instructions and applied the cleaning pad properly -- it didn't fit either, but I'm talking about the wire brush as well. That being said, I have a ton of other firearms and I'm sure I'll be using this a lot. I ended up buying a bore snake for my AR15, which compliments this kit perfectly.

it's still a nice package, and something I expect I'll be glad ...
by Wrangler (4 out of 5 stars)
October 13, 2015

A nifty package that's small enough to stick in a decent sized range bag. I bought one primarily for my 10/22 and Marlin 39, which require partial or near-total disassembly to clean from the breech end. This particular kit includes pieces to clean everything from 17 to 12 gauge, so it's a bit of overkill for my immediate need, but it was only a few dollars more than a small-caliber-only kit, so . . .

There are a couple of things to note. First, 17-22 cal cleaning requires small patches, and there are only a couple of them included in the kit. I had to order a package of the small ones almost immediately.

Second, while the "regular" pull cables will fit down a 22 cal bore, the tip is too long to fit between the bolt and breech faces, so you need to use the small caliber cable. But this kit doesn't include a T-handle adapter or handle for this cable - the adapter and handle for the larger cables uses a larger thread, and can't be attached to the small one. Otis sent me an adapter and handle at no charge after I sent 'em an email, but I had to ask.

Third, the tube of solvent/lube that's included seems to ooze around the screw on cap once the spout has been cut to dispense the liquid. It's not a gusher, but I suspect the inside of the kit will end up soaked in the stuff before long. Something to keep an eye on.

Overall, it's still a nice package, and something I expect I'll be glad to use at the range.
