Easy to Set Up, Works as Advertised
by Zachary (5 out of 5 stars)

This is a surge protector that doubles as a way to combat "vampire power," which sounds really cool but actually just means that your electronics are using power even when not turned on or in use.

It's simple to use: you simply decide which devices you want to always be on, which one you want to control your remaining devices, and which devices you want to only have power when needed. I imagine that most people use these for TVs, so I'll explain how I set mine up:

Control Outlet: TV

Always On: Router, Cable Box, Nintendo Switch (for charging when the TV is off)

Automatically Switched: Sound Bar, Roku, Blu-Ray Player

For devices like my sound bar and Blu-Ray player, they receive power immediately after the TV is switched on, and then I can turn them on. The Roku can be a little finickier; it turns on automatically, but it takes a minute to warm up, and once it does it can sometimes commandeer the TV through its HDMI-CEC function. This isn't a major problem and only seems to happen a small percentage of the time, but I haven't quite figured out why.

Additionally, I found a couple of the outlets to be too close together for the unnecessarily large plugs that some of my devices (mostly the router and cable box) use. I like that they spread out four of them for this reason, I just wish they were all spread out a little bit instead of six of them being clustered together on one end.

Overall, though, I think this is a really simple device to use to lower your electric bill a little bit and also lessen your environmental impact.

Great product!
by Matt M (5 out of 5 stars)

I've got one of these so far and I'm about to get a second. Works great for the TV entertainment stuff - I plug the TV into the "master", then I plug the Wii, Wii-U, Gamecube, VCR/DVD, BluRay, and HDTV antenna-amp into the switched outlets. I also have a sound system, PC, and cooling fan plugged into the non-switched outlets. I put the sound system on a non-switched so it can be used for radio without the TV on and the computer can't be on a switched plug because it has to shut down gracefully - but the computer has it's own power-saver settings to shut down after idle.

Without this the game systems, VCR/DVD, and BluRay players were drawing around 200 watts combined when they were all "off" according to my Kill-A-Watt. Now they turn on/off with my TV, the only downside is I have to wait about 30 seconds while the players and game systems "boot up" before I can use them - but that's not bad because the TV takes ~15 seconds to warm up so by the time I've selected my inputs and turned things on it's all ready to use anyway.

My only wish is that they had a version with even more switched outlets without needing any other splitters. I could see if we got another game system ever having to put a power-splitter on one of the switched ports and I also didn't have room to connect the Wii-U charging pad to a switched outlet (though luckily it seems to use <1 watt when it finishes charging anyway so I'm not that worried)

Reduce Energy Use
by gramma (5 out of 5 stars)

Since my home was connected to a Smart Electric/Gas Meter I have seen a noticable increase in my electric useage/bill. I became aware of the energy saving "Smart" powerstrip and believed this was one of many options I could use to reduce transient energy use. It is used in my home office and allows my non-essental electronics to power off completely when my computer is turned off or goes to sleep. It works! This could also be used for home entertainment. I chose not to since I have nothing in my entertainment center that needs to stay on all the time.....no recorders. The strip is easily installed with color coded receptacles to allow devices that require power to stay on. For me it was my internet modem, cell phone booster and landline.

Get this in place of a plane Jane surge protector; have 3 units for 5+ years and all are still worki
by romwyzard (5 out of 5 stars)

You buy it for the same price as any other surge protector but it has the added benefit of switching off devices that don't need to be always on (vampire loads). You are saving money the minute you start using it! I have three at the house. All are over 5 years old and have had zero problems. The biggest benefit is turning off one device (TV or computer) and having everything else turn off as well. It makes life much more simple.

One smart strip is on the TV and turns off the receiver, old CD changer, blu-ray player and the powered sub. My favorite is the one on the computer; I either turn off the computer or put it to sleep it turns off the display, powered sound system and scanner. The one in my kid's room is controlled by the TV and turns off his PS4 and Roku. I don't need to worry about him leaving the PS4 or Roku on by accident anymore! Like I said, the greatest benefit is simplifying my life. Saving power is just an added benefit, but depending on the number and size of vampire loads you have; you are saving money the minute you start using it. Remember, you are getting it primarily for SURGE PROTECTION!!! Why not get one that does other things as well?

Worked for 2 days
by Kindle Customer (1 out of 5 stars)
February 23, 2016

The unit worked as advertised for 2 days and then the switched outlets no longer responded to the master outlet. I had a Yamaha AV Receiver acting as the master with all the associated audio and video components occupying the switched outlets. It appears that the trip point circuitry has drifted to the point where it no longer could tell if the receiver was on or off. Reviews from back in the 2007-2009 time period often mention an adjustment knob on the device but that function has apparently been "value engineered" out. Mine did not have this adjustment capability. Overall, this device represents an excellent concept but with a very poor implementation. It may work for you if your 'master' device has a very low or no standby power consumption. If not, I can't recommend the SmartStrip. Mine is going back to Amazon.

Solves my TV's poor remote reception problem.
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)
May 9, 2016

I wish I knew this product existed years ago. I've had my TV (

Westinghouse LVM-42W2 42-Inch 1080p LCD Video Monitor
) and surround sound receiver (Sony STR-K995) connected to each other since 2007. My TV's remote control was always horrible to use and even when using various universal and learning remotes the TV's IR sensor was never receptive enough for the remote to reliably power it on and off. Most recently I've been using the RF remote that comes with the TiVo Roamio where the single TV Pwr button attempts to toggle the power on both the TV and receiver simultaneously. This often resulted in attempting to turn on or off the TV and receiver together and the TV wouldn't respond. This made powering on or off the system a several-minute dance of attempting to get the receiver and TV to power on and off in unison before I would get up off the couch and manually press the power button on the side of the TV.

Enter this power strip. I plugged in the TV into one of the switched (green) outlets and plugged in the receiver into the control (blue) outlet. I reprogrammed my TiVo remote so that it doesn't even try to control the TV at all. Now I simply turn the receiver on and off via the remote and the TV does the same automatically. I can't express how satisfying it now is to see these components finally work in unison. While my receiver supports HDMI-CEC, both my TiVo and TV do not, meaning I had no way to for one device to control the power of the other device until now.

I also plugged in the power for the subwoofer into one of the switched outlets, so hopefully that will save me on some electricity since previously the subwoofer was on 24/7, even when I wasn't watching TV.

The only downsides I would point out are:
1. For my purposes there are too many green (switched) outlets and not enough red (aways on) outlets. I have my cable modem, Apple TV and TiVo in the red outlets right now, but I want to move my Slingbox into this space and I'll need to add a second power strip or multi-tap to support it. I have 4 unused green outlets on this power strip.
2. It's pretty large, and therefore is hard to hide in a small enclosed space. It's currently slightly visible sticking up behind my TiVo and receiver in my entertainment center under my TV.
3. For what this product does it's a little expensive. I bought a $20 Sony learning remote years ago that solved this same problem, although I stopped using it because I preferred the TiVo remote. TiVo's learning remote is $50, so while this solution is cheaper, I would expect it to be half the price. I didn't buy the cheaper version (

Smart Strip SCG-3M Energy Saving Surge Protector with Autoswitching Technology, 7-Outlet
) of this power strip because I needed more red outlets (see #1 above).

Great idea!

These strips are a great idea! I bought two--a small one for my office, and this larger one for the living room. I turn off the computer in the office, and the monitors shut off automatically. The one in the living room works with the TV. All of the peripherals (except the satellite receiver) turn off when I turn off the TV. And it makes me feel better to think I'm saving a little bit on electricity. I don't know how much yet, but I'm hopeful that it makes at least a little difference.

Excellent alternative to switched outlets on an AVR
by moonlighteye (2 out of 5 stars)
May 10, 2014

I got this basically because the new home theater AVR I got doesn't have built-in switched outlets for accessories, which is now common for newer AVRs. Using a power strip with autoswitching outlets is really how it should be as it makes a lot of sense to offload this capability to an external component whose purpose is dedicated to providing power, rather than an AVR (which should focus on producing great sound and outputting power to your speakers). So, I have my AVR connected to the control outlet, then my TV, blu-ray player, and cooling fans connected to the switched outlets. Having always hot outlets is helpful, too, and I have my HTPC connected to one of those.
***SEPTEMBER UPDATE***

While this power strip initially worked as advertised, after about a month or so the devices connected to the switched outlets stopped powering on and off when the master device was switched on/off. I tried adjusting the sensitivity dial in all directions and that made no difference. Eventually the switched (green) outlets stopped working altogether. Therefore, I have dropped down my rating to two stars. It would be one star, but I'm working with tech support first, and that's taking a while...

Well built, works as advertised.
by wvu80 (5 out of 5 stars)

The Smart Strip is solid and well built. It's versatile in terms of the kinds of plugs it will hold. It has a nice feature with a built-in slide to cover unused outlets. I use it with my Onkyo 717 so when the AVR is turned off it turns off the Emotiva XPA-5 amp as well. The XPA-5 does not go into standby, it's all the way off (no light). When the Onk is started up the XPA-5 goes into standby (orange light) and must be manually turned on (blue light.) No stars taken off as I expected it to work in exactly that way.

Does it what it should...makes me feel good
by J. Tahan (5 out of 5 stars)

This product works 100% perfect for me. I have my TV plugged into the master slot and then i have my surround sound, Wii, Xbox, and PS3 hooked up to the "slave" ports. I then i have my cable box, and PS4 hooked up to the always on ports. once i turn the TV on i can hear the click within the surge protector and the lights on each appliance light up with power. Of course they do not turn on but they receive power almost instantly. It works just as good the other way too. I turn my TV off and almost instantly the other slave appliances turn off but the cable box and PS4 are unaffected. I have also gone through 2 power surges within the last 2 months and this surge protector is still holding up beautifully; so durability gets a 5 star as well.

As far as saving money goes im not sure how much it has saved me if any but i believe it does and i just waste electricity on other useless items around the house.
100% recommend this to a friend, family member, stranger!
