Vastly improves our camping meals.

Being huge fans of camping and outdoorsy stuff, my husband and I had this on our wedding registry, and we received it as a gift from our cousin. This little pocket sized portable stove works great!! We have used it many times since receiving it for camping and even in the back yard. We have cooked different soups, oatmeal, reheated meals, and just boiled plain old water for coffee using it.

The product itself is actually just the top part of the photo shown on the product page. It does not come with the small red propane tank (MSR All Season Fuel Blend, Net Wieght 8 oz, Gross Weight 13.1 oz) that fuels the device. We have been able to purchase the fuel for this at Dick's Sporting Goods, Walmart, and Sports Authority, but it may also be available on Amazon.com.

The PocketRocket Stove comes in a small red plastic container and is so compact and is easy to carry, that it barely adds any weight to your camping supplies. This is extremely useful if you are out hiking or primitive camping .You could even use it for a picnic.

All you have to do is take the small stove out of its container, attach it to your fuel supply (as shown), turn the gas knob to release the fuel, and light with a match or a lighter. The stove heats up very quickly. The small knob on the bottom of the stove twists so that you can adjust the strength of the flame/heat level. We have been able to quickly heat many different types of meals on this little gadget.

This small device has made all the difference in our primitive camping trips. We used to attempt to cook our food over a fire, and almost always that failed due to a weak fire, or just not having the right amount of heat directly applied to our pot/pan.

I highly recommend this simple device to anyone who wants a quick meal at the campsite, picnic, or other outdoor adventure.

Great little stove
by Patrick,Top Contributor: Camping (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a great little stove, once you get it lit it gives off a really strong burn and the valve lets you control how big you want the flame to be. Plus its super simple, not a lot can go wrong, and its built to last. The materiel and build quality are both fantastic and the little plastic sheath that comes with it is no bigger than it has to be, this thing is tiny and takes up almost zero space in a pack. That being said, there are three downsides to this stove; 1.) It does use a lot of fuel, even at low settings its a bit of a hog, 2.) If its windy it can be extremely hard to light. The wind blows the gaseous fuel away from the burner, so you have to really try and shield it to get it to light which can be difficult and while you're trying to do this. And all the while you're wasting fuel as it flies away, and 3.) The burner prongs, those three metal arms which support a pot or a mug, are close together and don't have a lot of surface area, so its really easy for something you're cooking with to slide off if it isn't perfectly level. To be honest though, these things wouldn't stop me from buying the stove, these problems are endemic to backpacking stoves and the Pocket Rocket really isn't unique in having these issues.

The stove and plastic cover pack nicely into a cookset and if your cookset is large ...

The size and weight of this stove doo not make buying this product hard. I have taken this on the AT, in George Washington National forest to name a few places. The stove and plastic cover pack nicely into a cookset and if your cookset is large enough the fuel will nest ontop of the stove in the cookset. I have used the isopro fuel and primus power fuel. Canisters of the same size perform and burn for comparable time.

If the stove had an integrated ignition system the price, size, and weight I assume would increase. Having a lighter handy to ignite the stove is no issue for me.

The surface area provided by the supports are adequate for most applications. If you plan to boil water or cook on this with a canteen or water bottle, the stove is great. I even pushed the limits of the stove and took it tailgaiting and used an 8" frying pan to cook brats and as long as I balanced the handle and pan well the set up was stable. (Not that I recommend this as the primary use)

MSR POCKET ROCKET STOVE

Neat little stove, super small@lite. Seems almost Dainty. It boils water rally fast, the flame is adjustable so that its not ROARING and mayby conserve a little fuel. For me the only draw back is buying the fuel,Its fairley hard to find and expensive. Ive found only 4oz &8oz canisters At Academy Sports and Outdoors. For those of us use to buying the coleman 16 plus oz bottles of fuel for around 2.50 a bottle and have one bottle last most of 8hrs will be shocked at the price of the MSR 8oz can. It was 5.99 per can plus tax and get ready for this... on the bottom of the can it says burn time 1-2 hours. My self i would gladly carry the extra waight of a coleman type 16oz bottle of fuel to have about 8hrs of burn time for say a week back packing trip so according to the numbers,Two 16 oz colemane fuel cans under 6.00-and around 16 hours of burn time compared to 12.00-13.00 for Two 8oz cans of MSR fuel and mayby 4 hours of burn time. I love the stove and think its gonna be a great edition to my gear but the cost of fuel and how much of it one would have to pack on an extended back packing trip Might be a factor one mite consider, and except for waight issues how easy it is to find coleman fuel cans,ie..walmart any hardware store, sporting goods in department stores? You have to decide. but if i had it to do over i probly would have just not bought this little stove because of the higher cost and lower amount of burn time as well as the fuel being harder to find..update 1/19/12 Ive used the stove on two outings so far and have not had any problems. The stove lites very easy with the flick of a Bic and i have burned about 80 minutes on the first 8oz can of fuel so far and the canster still feels half full or better when shaking it.I have not used it on full throttle yet cause it heets up what i eat and drink qwick on about a quarter turn, will let everyone know how long one 6dollar can lasts me the way I use it. (:

This'll be a simple review for a simple stove.

Buy one. Open package. Screw on to Isobutane cannister. Place on level ground. Open valve. Ignite. Cook.

This has been on MSR's lineup for quite awhile and with good reason. It may not be the lightest nor will it fit into your little pot with a fuel cannister. Yet it has built a solid reputation for being a dependable, efficient, stove done up in a small package. Again, buy one.

I wouldn't go on the trail without it!

We tried our hand at homemade alcohol stoves. They got the job done, but they were impossible to control, unstable, and adding fuel if it had gone out was a nightmare. The MSR PocketRocket is worth its weight in gold. It's sturdy, provides a solid platform for our kettle, and is incredibly easy to use. One small fuel tank has lasted us six days/nights so far, and fits perfectly inside the kettle (

)

Stop reading reviews and buy it. Lightweight, small, efficient, and gets the job done!

Luxury backpacking in a small package
by Carne (5 out of 5 stars)

I've been using this stove for backpacking and car camping for 4 years now. I saw that there aren't a large number of reviews on Amazon, so I thought I should share my experience with it. I used to backpack without a stove. Then when I got this guy, I realized I could have hot food and drinks without adding much weight. This added a level of luxury to the backcountry that is totally worth the couple extra ounces.

This little guy packs a punch. Basically, this thing is more like a torch than a stove burner, which is PERFECT for most backpacking. Need to boil a liter of water for your Mountain House meal? 4 minutes. Need some hot water for your morning tea/coffee? 4 minutes. Having trouble getting that campfire started in the rain? No problem - hold a bundle of kindling over this puppy for a few seconds.

In fact, having used a friend's Jetboil system recently, I much prefer the Pocket Rocket. It is simpler, packs smaller, and is more versatile. I'm still using the same stove I bought four years ago, and it's been dropped in water, sand, and mud, and has never failed to light. In windy conditions, this thing will light and stay lit due to the concentrated torch flame.

For car camping, I use this guy to boil water for coffee, tea, cup-a-noodle, things like that. Where this stove can't compete with a more traditional burner is in simmer or low heat tasks. The flame is so concentrated on this guy that you can't really use it with a skillet to cooks eggs or pancakes. It is just too small and too hot a flame. However, when you're car camping, you've got plenty of room to bring along a coleman burner and shouldn't need to use your MSR for more than heating some water.

Bottom line: this stove is an excellent choice for backpackers, and makes and a great addition to the kitchen kit of car campers. I imagine they'll be making these for years to come.

Great Portable Camping Stove
by conlysm (5 out of 5 stars)

I love this little thing. It is small, lightweight, portable, does what it is supposed to do and the price is right. I have used this in windy conditions and it lights and works fine but in order to actually heat food or water you need to shield the flame which I will usually find something in nature to do this. I don't feel that this is a con because this would be the case with any camping stove. I know some of them come with wind shields or similar devices but you also have to pay more for those and you start losing compact-ability. My only complaint is that I wish the fuel metering device/knob was a bit more offset i.e. move it away from one of the folding supports. I would highly recommend.

I bought the Kovea LPG adaptor one that is excellent. I really like the hard triangle box

Quality, efficiency, durability. Really worth the price.

I highly recommand to buy an adapter "Camping Propane Small Tank (input) to a Lindal Valve output" to go with as the Camping Propane Small Tanks are the most common to find (at least in my area). I bought the Kovea LPG adaptor one that is excellent.

I really like the hard triangle box. it is just too bad that it didn't offer a little more room in length in order to add my converter inside.

great stove for the times you don't want to fuss with a campfire
by JHall (5 out of 5 stars)

I inherited an MSR Pocket Rocket from a family member who was retiring from camping. It was a game changer for me as far as being able to make a few eggs and a cup of coffee in the morning without having to build a campfire or lug my heavy old Coleman 2-burner. My teenaged son was so impressed by it that he took my place as the camp cook. Hooray! I now get to sit in my camp chair and look at the lake while he makes my coffee and eggs. He also loves it for making burgers. Sure, that means one burger at a time so he doesn't need to balance a larger pan, but we're camping! I'll gladly take more time relaxing while he cooks.

I bought this one as a gift for him so he doesn't take mine when he leaves for college. I'll be hiding mine so he doesn't take both!
