Necessity v. Practicality
by Fred Anonymous Smith (5 out of 5 stars)
November 16, 2010

One reviewer questioned the necessity of this tool. Since that goes to the heart of why I purchased, I'll respond to that premise. Of course, you can always use your fingers, so a nail setter is obviously not necessary. In fact, no similar tool, including that reviewer's recommended needle nose pliers, is truly necessary. However, there are some advantages.

Like needle nose pliers, a nail setter can protect your fingers. Moreover, a nail setter is faster to load up than needle nose pliers (good for repetitive jobs) and, since the nail is held by magnetics instead of the teeth of a tool, offers no resistence to the movement of the nail into your project when struck. Latter can also protect both the nail (scratches, etc) and your tool (wear on the teeth, etc). Besides, I'd rather ding up this nail setter than a tool intended for another purpose. Dings on a nail setter often cause no real harm (to it's simple function), while the same on another tool could destroy it (jaw alignment on pliers, etc).

So, while a nail setter is not necesary, it is practical - in roughly the same manner as a hammer is more practical than needle nose pliers for hammering nails.

Clearly one is always free to continue using fingers, pliers, or whatever. I certainly won't criticize those choices. These nail setters (ThumbSaver TS001 Magnetic) are my choice. Others have already commented about the sturdiness, the price is decent enough for the pair (standard & mini), and they do serve a purpose well.

Saves your thumbs, really
by AA Westenberg (5 out of 5 stars)

I have bought this set thrice: the first time the hotel I was staying in, did not recognise the package as intended for a guest and it ended up in the repairman's kit. No doubt making that employee happy. (The hotel reimbursed me for it.) The second time it did end up with me and I used it for a long time exclusively for hamering nails, being confident that I would not hit my thumb or any other part of my hand while hammering away. The third set was for my brother, who fell in love with this set, when doing handyman chores at my house. He however also used it for holding screws in place when using his electric screwdriver, and it works well when you use it that way too.

The handle is slightly bend which makes it very well suited for holding the stem of the holder comfortably and the nail or screw exactly perpendicular to the surface it needs to go into.

Well thought out, well executed, great tool.

Awesome little finger savers
by DoodleToodle (5 out of 5 stars)
December 2, 2014

Bought these 3 years ago but never really got a chance to use them much until I recently re-shingled my roof. I had to nail in about 1000 nails with plastic caps (hence I could not use a nail gun). The first day, I forgot them in my shop, so had to put all nails in by hand. The constant abrading and scratching against my fingers after a few hundred nails, in addition to the occasional finger smash, left me bruised and bleeding. I dreaded having to finish the job the next day, but made sure I brought these nail holders. WOW were they awesome! They worked great and kept the nails in place while I got each one started.

I think if I was a pro these would have slowed me down a little; but then, if I were a pro, I probably wouldn't need them. As it is, I think they made me faster, if anything, as I didn't have to deal with any pain.

Appropriately Named Product

I've started taking a medication that has messed with my coordination. This product truly saved my thumbs. I wouldn't want to frame a house this way, but for the small projects it is awesome. It is quick and easy to use, keeping one's thumbs far from the dangerous action.

If you've ever had a problem with smacking your thumbnail, then you should spend a couple of bucks. Would you give $10 to get rid of the pain when you've hit your thumb with a hammer?! Heck, yeah! Avoid the pain. Buy this now.

A Great Idea Well Executed
by J Silvasy (5 out of 5 stars)

Some years ago I purchased a plastic nail holder, but it doesn't handle smaller nails very well because it is too thick. These nail setters come in two sizes, are slightly curved to enable you to adjust the position for different surfaces, and are magnetized, keeping the nails vertical with no problem. I love them, and I highly recommend them.

Not as great as it appears
by DSp (2 out of 5 stars)

I got this hoping to avoid hitting my fingers and thumb while trying to hang pictures. While these are magnetic and hold the nail somewhat, for picture hanging, I'm better off using my fingers. This actually increased safety hazards rather than reduce them. The nail would be attracted to the magnet, but it wasn't at all strong enough to hold it tightly in place, so it would slip around when hit. I was extremely disappointed with it. Maybe it works better on flat surfaces rather than walls, but I think it would still have the issue of not being able to hold the nail perfectly still.

These were great when it was hard to hold a nail in tight spaces and definitely would protect you from banging your fingers. I would recommend them but their use is a little limited as sometimes it is easy to just hold the nail yourself.

Surpised at how well this works, considering how cheesy the item picture is
by Patricia P. Surrey (5 out of 5 stars)

I had my doubts about the product because of the frankly cheesy photo for it. But it works better than I expected. Unlike the kind that clamps down on the nail, this is magnetic and really holds the nail in place while you whack away. You can hold the nail in several angles which is great for cramped spaces.

Lives up to its name.

Useful, simple invention. I'd like it if it had a stronger magnet; it tends to not hold large nails all that well. But I remember what it was like without one of these, and am really glad to have this. So are my fingers.

What a great idea!

I had no idea anything like this existed! I found it while looking through Amazon's building tools and decided to try it for some renovation work we are doing. It is like magic! I haven't hit my thumb or fingers at all, and it actually does speed up the nailing process.

Does most of its job.
by Bongo (4 out of 5 stars)

Overall I am very pleased with this tool. The magnets are strong enough to hold even the thinnest nail or staple. I would not recommend it for screws, however. Even though it is advertised to hold them, I tried one on low speed with my drill and it quickly began shredding the metal off the arms and magnet.
