A necessity!!!!

I love my pets -- love them. If you are even reading this, I suspect you do too. I had only seen pet seat belts for larger dogs that tethered the seatbelt to the collar. That always seemed like it would choke or hang a large dog in an accident. I only began to relook after we had a near tragedy the other day. I was on a winding road with my American Bulldog in the passenger seat. He is a good, well behaved, large dog. He loves to pick up the kids from school and knows when its time to go. On this day, he was enjoying his ride to get the kids when an oncoming car came head on into our lane. I slammed the brakes HARD. Our bull dog flew into the dash so hard that his head broke the air vent. I was just sick. After days of monitoring, he seemed ok, although he seemed to have a bit of a concussion that night. I was not going to let that happen again. Still, after witnessing that, I am convinced that the tether to the collar would have either broken or choked him as his body flew forward. When I saw this system, I was very hopeful. This is something that protects the body of the dog and connects the system to the seatbelt system. My dog is 84 pounds, but very broad chested so I went with the 90 lb and up size. It fits very well and, importantly, it is very comfortable. It gives excellent support. He also doesn't mind wearing it. We have had it for several weeks and have used it alot. It is good quality. I feel like if the same near accident were to happen again, he would stay in his seat and not be hurt at all. If I had not found this, I don't know that I could feel good riding around with him. Even though he loves it, that one incident scared me silly. I truly thought he could have permanent damage. Now, he does not go in the car without his seatbelt. We love it!

Dog Can Get Out Of Harness
by Cat (1 out of 5 stars)
October 3, 2012

My dog can easily get out of the harness. It seems like it fits fine (although it is a little bulky and awkward.) But he is still somehow able to get out of it. I thought maybe I was putting it on wrong, but after re-reading the instructions I found that I was putting it on correctly. My dog weighs 25lbs, and I bought the medium size (for dogs 20-55 lbs.) I wonder if I had bought the small size (which says for dogs up to 25 lbs) if it would have worked better.

I do like the seat belt strap. I like the length of the strap because he can't move around a lot while I am driving. (He gets car sick and tries to climb into my lap while I'm driving.) The strap is long enough that he can move around on the seat, but he can't get off the seat. (This is only as long as the strap is fastened to the lap-part of the seatbelt. If it is fastened to the shoulder belt as shown in the pictures, my dog can jump off the seat and make it up to the front of my minivan from the middle row of seats.) However, the seat belt strap is something I could have come up with on my own for much cheaper than what I paid for this harness.

Definitely Best pet vehicle safety harness for us!!
by B&B (5 out of 5 stars)
June 24, 2012

We much prefer this Solvit safety harness. It is easier to get on and off and is easier to adjust. The car strap is short-made to loop through existing seat belts in your car so your dog has some range. Our medium size dog likes to look out of the window/sniff. For her size the car strap has to be on hooked on one side or the other as the car seat belt + strap will not allow the range for her to be back and forth at both windows. But (hopefully) it will hold her in/against the back seat in case of sudden stops; not become hurt or become a flying projectile in case of an accident,

We will not be able to leave the harness on all the time as it prevents our dog from using her doggie door-the straps get caught on the sides of the dog door frame as she is a little on the hefty side...."Old people have fat dogs",

The other brand states on the package to add 2 inches to your chest measurement for the correct size but Amazon does not say that so we ended up with the wrong size. Amazon was great to credit our money back and said don't even bother to send the other one back .

This Solvit brand adjustments straps ends hang out - four loose ends - so I hand sewed the ends of the straps down-now she looks neat and tidy.

I wanted to get another car seat belt strap so we did not have to install and re-install each time we changed cars but my husband said it's no big deal to switch out,,,time will tell and I will check to see if a car seat belt strap is available separately.

We had procrastinated about getting a safety harness for our dog for years until we recently saw a TV show that showed a dog sailing through the car towards the front window of the car at the time of an accident...we ordered from Amazon that very day!

Updated after reading CPS test results - 100% failure rating
by M. Hughes (1 out of 5 stars)
September 6, 2011

Below is an consumer review article on the effectiveness of safety harnesses. According to the nonprofit Center for Pet Safety (CPS)all dog harnesses have a 100% failure rate. That means none of them were effective in crash situations. Here is the article:

In a revolutionary new study, crash tests showed that not a single kind of dog harness provided sufficient protection in the event of an accident, and had a 100 percent failure rate.

The nonprofit Center for Pet Safety (CPS) said that despite being properly harnessed, canine crash-test dummies became projectiles, and were even decapitated.
"We tested them to the child safety restraint standard and we experienced a 100 percent failure rate to protect either the consumer or the dog," said CPS founder and CEO Lindsey Wolko. "That is a very real concern for consumers."

CPS would not release the names of brands tested out of fear that consumers will stop using harnesses altogether. Injuries are typically worse for unrestrained dogs, but this test is showing that in some cases, the harnesses are just as lethal.

Veterinarian Kim Haddad has seen firsthand what kind of injuries dogs sustain in accidents.
"Broken legs, broken jaws, soft tissue injury, it can be pretty traumatic," she said. "Something is better than nothing, but again, it is only going to be as good as the manufacturer, the fit and the user application of the product."

The American Automobile Association says 20 percent of owners admit to allowing their dogs to ride freely (though the actual number is probably much higher).

Constituents of some states have suggested bills that require drivers to keep their pets harnessed, but CPS worries that such laws would create a false sense of security. People might mistakenly believe the harnesses have been tested for safety. Though some manufacturers claim they do test, there is no government standard in place to guarantee their assertions of high quality.

CPS is currently calling for standardized testing akin to ones for child safety seats. Lawmakers must be educated on the subject before creating harness legislation. Subaru is working with CPS to initiate a harness testing standard.

Keep My Little Buddy Safe.
by LIWright (5 out of 5 stars)
January 28, 2013

If you love your buddy as much as I do, then a review for any Safety Harness should not make a difference in choosing one. However, if a review is necessary, this is my take... I chose this particular Safety Harness because I have a small Terrier as pictured in the, 'Solvit' advertisement, so that made it a little easy. The Safety Harness also comes in Medium and Large. Actually, what I really like about this Safety Harness, you can unlatch it from the car seat, and attach your leash right to it. I'm quite suer there's other Safety Harness out there that will double in use the same way, however, I find the 'Solvit' Safety Harness is made very strong, and it's no hassle to put it on or taking it off my little buddy!

Note: A word to the wise... Some Safety Harness are the same in style, and some retailers put there names on products. For example; I saw this same particular style of Safety Harness in a catalog under a different retailer's name, selling for triple the price. I did my research, found it on Amazon and paid triple less the catalog price. Just beware, the prices may vary for that same style of Safety Harness. So, with that said, you should even shop around on Amazon for the best price. ....But, you already know that, right?

Great Product, But Watch the Sizes
by jedigirl77 (4 out of 5 stars)

We bought these in small and medium for our Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. One is 11 lbs, one is 24 lbs. They work well, but make sure you have adjusted them well before you take your dogs out in them, as they are a bit bulky, and it's easy for them to squeeze out if not fitted correctly.

That being said, if you have a slimmer dog that is right around that 20lb mark, you might want to try the smaller size first. Our bigger Cavalier, the male, is quite slim, and the medium size harness is pretty big on him. He doesn't really try to get out of it, but I fear he could slip it, even tightened all the way, if he tried. He is very slender around the neck and chest area. The smaller one, let out, fits him just fine. But if you had a stockier dog, or one with a barrel chest like one of the bully breeds, the medium would probably work just fine.

The small size works great on our smaller female. She's a bit stockier than the male, and we have no problems with fitting it for her.

The clip that hooks to the seatbelt is great, I love that it unscrews so you can actually attach it to the belt. This makes it easy for the dog to move around, but if you 'lock' the seatbelt, they can't go far.

I suggest getting a seat cover or using a blanket you can tuck into the seats if you have leather seats, so they can't slide around as much. Other than that, we are very happy with the harness and happy to have the dogs firmly in place in the back seat and not trying to jump into the front. :)

Harness is Okay
by dogowner (3 out of 5 stars)
July 23, 2014

I have an issue with all pet vehicle safety harnesses. Okay so the harness itself is fine and I have no issue with this particular product. It's about the same as any other harness you would buy at a pet store. The issue that I have is my dog likes to turn in circles before she sits down and, with the harness on her, all this does is wind up the seatbelt into a knot, tightens the harness too much around her, and I have to take everything off and start all over again because I don't want it to be squeezing her down the road. Once I get everything situated, she does it all over again and I'm back to undoing it all and getting her situated again. It's such a pain. I wish they could invent a safety harness that is on a ball joint or something so that when the dog does turn around in circles the part that connects the harness to the seatbelt would go with her and not tangle up. That would be the best harness EVER!

Not bad to install, MUCH safer than letting dogs roam in backseat!
by JenBar,Top Contributor: Baby (5 out of 5 stars)
August 7, 2013

I love this harness. I previously had my 3-year-old yellow lab mix roaming free in the back of my SUV. Then I got to thinking about how if, God forbid, we got in an accident, she could go flying through the windshield. So I got this after reading the reviews, and I'm so glad I did!

Set-up wasn't bad. The worst part for me was doing those little half-circle clips! I've never been good at those. But everything else was easy. The best part is it hooks and unhooks very easily, so if you have to switch it between cars or something, that's good.

My dog doesn't seem to mind it. And I feel much better knowing that she'll be secured if we were to have a collision! I was worried that she'd stink up the backseat and leave fur all over, which is why I got the Solvit carseat cover, too. It's a much better situation than I had her in before!

About sizing--I feel stupid but it took me the longest time to see where the sizing measurements were! So just look carefully. My dog is 50 lbs and I got her the medium, which is perfect. But she's small for a lab, so just order accordingly.

Very pleased with this purchase!

Safety and Comfort
by Debizzle (4 out of 5 stars)
March 15, 2014

The padding on this harness is extra thick and the straps are adjustable for a custom fit.

It is easy to get the dog in/out of the harness and I really appreciate that the attachments are metal and will not break in an accident. We have had to slam on the brakes both before and after buying this and I am much happier seeing my dog being held in place and only slightly inconvenienced than seeing her flung into the back of the seat and fall in to the floorboard.

My only complaint is that the straps in the front/top of the harness (around her neck/shoulders) can't be tightened properly without the harness sliding up against her neck so I have to leave it a little loose.

The slack eventually loosens! Not so safe for my big dog (Alaskan Malamute) known for pulling streng
by RescueAnimals (3 out of 5 stars)
April 22, 2014

My 103 lb. Alaskan Malamute fits in my 2013 Camry back seat. You can either connect the dog safety belt to the human safety belt part that goes over your lap OR on the part that goes over your chest. WARNING if your dog pulls a lot, malamutes are known for this, then the slip LOOSENS!!! My dog jumped out of the car when I dropped off my son at practice. His harness was half on/off. It was still buckled BUT THE STRAP JUST SLIPPED OFF?!! I will need to TIE the strap in a tight knot to prevent the give. It is NOT LIKE A WALKING HARNESS instead it is more like a fanny pack belt that has the extra just hanging to the side and eventually the whole thing gets loose. So I admit human error in leaving the window down lower than I should have, but I didn't expect him to break out of the safety harness?!!!! So now I am skeptical and leave both walking and safety harness on the tightest part of the safety belt AND have him in the MIDDLE of the back seat. He sits just fine and can stick his head out of the window and has less room to pull. I would have died if this happened while driving on a busy road!! He has never jumped out of the window before....

The clip attaches to the back very easily. I gave it a 3/5 because it fits perfect and I love the soft gel cushion for the chest, but the strap eventually gives :( As long as I put knots in the slack I don't have to worry about hitting the breaks or my dog jumping out the window. However, because my dog PULLS and gets hot easy, I do not use it for walking. I use a dog harness instead the kind that clips on his chest.
