You could build a better minimal kit, but the sealed can is not something most of us can do at home. Some of the contents are average quality, but all are functional. If this is all you had, it would allow you to build a fire, signal, fix minor equipment issues and be a bit more comfortable. Are cheap enough to buy a few and toss in a desk, purse/man purse, bike bag, car, boat, etc... Just forget it until you need it. And just remember, this is a minimal kit. One school of thought is to keep a little kit like this in a cargo (pants) pocket to augment your more substintial kit in your pack, on the bike, Etc.. Should you get separated form your main bag/kit, you still have a few items on you.

A novelty. Not worth the money for the few trinkets inside. The compass will get you lost. I have however used the fishing line to sew the sole back on to my house slippers.
