I do NOT recommend leaving young children unattended with small pieces or magnetic ...
by Baba Rex (5 out of 5 stars)
April 23, 2018

Product: Magformers Standard Set (62 Pieces)

Intent of Purpose: Education Tool (geometry, spatial concepts, sorting, etc.)

Duration of Use: 4 Months

Amount of Daily Use (low/moderate/high): Moderate

Age (range) of Primary User(s): Baby (10 month - 14 month)*, Adult
*As a fore note, I do NOT recommend leaving young children unattended with small pieces or magnetic toys. Seriously, don't even look away or get up to go to the bathroom. Be responsible, please.

Durability / Longevity Rating: 5/5

My set has withstood moderate mistreatment from a toddler over the course of 4 months and still looks new. No pieces have broken. They have been frequently stepped on, chucked across the room, and dropped onto a tile floor.

Appearance /Presentation Rating: 5/5

Colorful and attractive. Not an eyesore.

Construction / Usefulness / Practicality Rating: 5/5

They are lightweight; I'd say no potential for broken windows, busted sheetrock, broken tile; not likely to result in severe injury and or concussion if they happen to become projectiles. The magnets rattle around when you shake an individual piece (not a negative quality).

Useful as an educational tool. Examples: construction; spatial concepts; geometry; multiple mathematical concepts; matching; stacking; etc.

The magnets are strong. In the video I have attached, you can see how strongly they stick to a metal baking pan. Unfortunately, I can only upload one video; I had made a comparison video of the staying power of Magna-Tiles vs. Magformers; even though I couldn't upload it, I'll tell you that the Magformers won.

Cost-Efficiency Rating (MSRP): 2/5

At the suggested retail price, this isn't a cost efficient item, especially if you're working on a budget. Keep reading though.

This product is frequently marked down by as much as 40-50% off the MSRP. Having worked in Ecommerce and sales for many years, I can assure you that markdowns aren't always indicative of low sales or low-quality products; it's a sales gimmick to persuade buyers into thinking they're saving money. The MSRP is usually an unrealistic, inflated number which exists to convince you that you're catching a bargain. Ordinarily, even when a product is half off, the manufacturer is still profiting and you're actually paying a more realistic/fair price. So, if you purchase this item at a deep discount of around 40-50% off, I'd rate the cost-efficiency at about 4/5.

Likeliness of Repurchase: Highly Likely

I don't know if I could ever have too many of these. For the time being, I only own one 62-piece set, but I would be glad to own a swimming pool full of these.

Overall Rating: 4.75/5 (if purchased at a discount)

If you aren't quite sure which magnetic building tool to purchase (there are many available on the market), I can tell you that I have three different top-of-the-line products (Magformers, Magna-Tiles, and Tegu). Of the three, Magformers are my favorite. Here's why: they have strong magnets; the open construction allows chunky little fingers (or any fingers) to handle them with ease; I feel that they are less likely to crack if stepped on in lieu of the open construction; the size and shape variety is nice; they are lightweight *and* durable at the same time.

THE END. Hope you enjoyed my review. 😊

Great toy for all ages!
by Catherine (5 out of 5 stars)

Great toy for kids. My daughter (10) ended up using her imagination more with these than her legos. We had purchased a small set prior to this set and found this to add to her set. It's a great gift and toy to have around, especially if you have multiple kids in your home with older and little ones in the house. They are not a choking hazard at all. Great product!

Great toy, we have tons which is so fun

My son loves these so much. This is the third time he's asked for them for his bday. He gets so creative with his building, I'm always impressed. We have so many now, and all different shapes which is so fun. Just buy the regular kits, don't go for any that come with themes like log cabin or vehicles. Just let the kids create with their own imagination

Think these will be a nice & more easily handled basic first set of magnetic toys for our grandson
by Grandma Zizzy (5 out of 5 stars)
November 14, 2016

Gosh - sure are a lot of various magnetic construction sets out there! I'd heard about them as I was looking around for Christmas ideas for our 4-1/2 year old grandson, but also got a little confused - there are SO many to choose from, including Magformers, Super Magformers, Magna-Tiles, Playmags, Picasso Tiles, Tegu Blocks, and each of them has fans! After reading up on each, I settled on this 62-piece basic set - they're pricey, as far as the size of our wallet, but I like the cutouts on these that should make them easier for our grandson to hold - Super Magformers have cutouts as well, but they're larger than these regular ones (though I do hear that neither type of Magformers stand up on their own due to their rounded sides, and the insides of the shapes have cylindrical magnets which spin around, so you have to stack them one by one - takes a bit longer to clean up after play and takes up a bit more space from what I can gather.) I'm considering Tegu - which are actually wooden magnetic blocks - for our 2 year old grandson, but I think our 4-1/2 year old little guy will really get a kick out of these!

As the description says, there are 12 pentagons, 20 triangles and 30 squares... the sides of each pentagon and square are 2-1/2", and of each traiangle are 2". I love that each shape is a striking 2-tone color, whether turquoise/dark blue, yellow/pink, purple/green orange/red - very cool looking and eye-catching! There's a model booklet enclosed that shows a variety of available sets... with this particular set, your youngster can build things like a hourglass, fish, heart, microphone, house, UFO, a couple of different rockets, stars and buildings, 3-D shapes like a cube or hexagonal prism, and others I've NEVER heard of but are sure fun to try and pronounce... tetrahedron, octahedron, cuboctahedron, icosahedron, dodecahedron, icosidodecahedron and rhombicuboctahedron - goodness gracious! (One thing to note... I took a "sneak peek" - as grandmas are allowed to do! - and while the outside box is sturdy, the tray inside that holds the shapes is super flimsy. Might want to have something else available to store the pieces in.)

Perfect number of pieces

January 28, 2019

This set has the perfect number of pieces to make a bunch of creations. Sturdy and durable. Magformers is the only brand I trust for this type of product. Includes convenient handbook full of creations that can be made and instructions on how to make them.

Favorite toy- but not great on the light table
by Ms. S (4 out of 5 stars)
November 30, 2018

I'll start by saying that these are one of our favorite toys. The magnets are nice and strong so creations hold together really well, the colors are bright, and there are enough pieces to build some cool things. My babies love them because they're easy to hold on to- I do watch them carefully but I'm not really worried about pieces coming apart, they seem really sturdy and well made.

The only thing that was really disappointing is that I bought this set for use on our light table, but they look really blah. The pieces are transparent, but for some unfathomable reason the designers made each piece different colors on the front and back. Some are light blue and dark blue- those look okay, but the purple/green and yellow/pink pieces just end up looking muddy. I really wish they were solid colors. For this purpose, I wish I'd spent my money on Picasso tiles. Still, even though they're not as pretty as I was hoping, they've still been a big hit!
(The first picture is of a little play hack I discovered- I taped a cookie sheet to a tray table so they can build on a magnetic surface. It works really well!)

Nice, but quality issues and magnets not easy to work with.
by Peter Heemeijer (3 out of 5 stars)
February 27, 2018

This is a nice set. My 2.5 year old son loves playing with it. However, I expected a bit more given that the set is quite expensive:
* Two of the pentagons were missing a magnet. This is really sloppy and should have never passed quality control!
* The box itself, and the booklet, are very cheap. Again, for the money I would expect something slightly more sturdy.
* The pieces' magnets are fine, but I find it hard to make neat, regular shapes with them. This is because the pieces are not connected at a fixed angle, so that the whole structure becomes rather loose.

On the whole not bad, but I'm actually planning on going back to the old plastic polydrons, since the shapes you make with those are sturdy, so more easay for my son to play with.

Box cover has ferris wheel attachment that is not in box
by Sa Pham (4 out of 5 stars)
August 15, 2018

I was very excited about this toy. When I gave it to my nieces and nephews to play, the initially liked it. However, there is a Ferris wheel attachment that is on both the box and the how to build it book that isn't in the box. The kids saw the cool looking attachment and wanted to play with it and was disappointed that it wasn't in the package. If its not in the box, it shouldn't be on the picture cover. Sad to see disappointment in their faces. Other then that, a good product.
