The Hopkins 90110 2x4basics Flip Top Bench comes with everything you'll need to make a comfortable sturdy bench and table. Construct any size up to 8 feet long, you just supply the wood (lumber not included). Our patented slide lock allows you to convert from bench to table and back with ease. When you are finished, the table is easily converted back to a bench for space saving storage. You can even assemble two Flip Top Bench's for a full-size picnic table. Simple assembly is required with only a powered screwdriver, wrench, and saw, no miter or angle cuts necessary. Stain, paint, or finish the wood to fit your style and application or use treated lumber (tools and 2x4s not included). The assembled unit stands 34 inches high (86cm) in the bench position and 31 inches (78cm) in the table position, both with a 17.5-inch (44cm) seat height.

I gotta tell you, these bench kits are GREAT. For less than $50 bucks I was willing to give this a try. Home Depot had ground contact pressure treated 2x4's in 6 foot on sale for $3.75 each. Good pressure treated lumber, already cut to 6 foot. (Hot TIP: I know it says you can, but I wouldn't go with 8 foot wide. Not only does it make it really heavy, but it will be a little spongy in the middle). 6 Foot seems to be a perfect size. I loved the idea of it converting to a table AND putting 2 together back to back for a full size picnic table. But would it really work "as advertised", be stable and nice looking.

Yes, yes and yes to all three questions. I used a neutral semi transparent 4 year stain/sealer on the pressure treated wood. You could use regular 2x4x6's, but you know what happens to untreated pine sitting outside 24x7x365. It will rot within a couple years. Pressure treated 2x4 rated for ground contact should be around a LONG time. Don't even need to stain it, so long as your ok with it going gray, and crack/checking a little. Mine is to accompany a recently built screen house with some outside seating, so I sealed it with the same stuff used on the screen house. I love this and it is just what I had in mind. The doubling as a table is perfect for my application. By the way, the mechanism to fold the bench back into a table works well and locks into place. Overall the unit seems very sturdy and should stand up to the elements well. A few building tips in the next paragraph if your interested.

If your not going to stain or seal the lumber, no problem if its pressure treated lumber and you don't mid the fade to gray and some wood checking. 1) However if you do stain or seal the wood, sand it a bit first, or you'll need to wait until good and dry before you seal it. Just like a new deck with pressure treated lumber. Pressure treated lumber comes with a surface coating meant to hold in the penetrated treatment. Often stain or sealer simply won't stick or penetrate. A light sanding allows the sealer/stain to penetrate and still allow the boards to "gas out". While your at it hit the edges of the boards to give them a more finished look, rounding the sharp ends a bit. I couldn't stand waiting, so I sealed after putting it together and allowing a few days strong sun drying. 2) Pick out really straight and true 2x4's. Warped ones are a no go here. I found not all of my 6 footers were exactly the same length. Some were off by as much as 3/4". So I simply cut them to be certain all were EXACTLY the same length. Take your time putting it together so you have even flush ends all the way around. An extension on your drill/driver is helpful for getting it into a few of the tight places where screws are needed. The kit will be a 1-2 project on a project scale with 5 being hard. All you need is a drill/driver for pilot holes and driving screws, and a circular saw to be sure the boards are all the same length. If your careful picking out the lumber and find 6 foot pressure treated 2x4's, you may not need the saw. I have bought a second one and 9 more pressure treated 2x4x6.

Three sets for two twelve foot benches--success!!

We purchased three sets so we could make two twelve foot benches. I painted the pieces that came in the kit to look like iron with what I had around the house, so it's funny to me that the only black I had was a magnetic primer, making these even more like metal than I intended. I wish they had other color options, but these are great quality and I didn't mind taking the time to paint and seal them properly since I know we'll have them for s long time. Putting three sets together worked GREAT, btw, this is one solid table!!

Wake board bench

This is a nice and easy kit to put together. I bought 3 sets and made mine 12 feet long with one leg in the middle. I really love the idea of these and it's a pretty good execution besides the sidways sway that you get when it's in table mode.

After reading some reviews about the hard to reach screw locations I found a flexible bit driver that worked really well and made assembly a breeze here's an amazon link: Ryobi SpeedLoad A10FB1G 11 Inch Flexible Shaft Extension and Bit Holder (For 1/4 Inch Hex Bits, Bits Not Included) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P8HJF5G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Y5hPAbFK0NVR0 I will also attach a picture.

I also went with torx pan head screws to prevent stripping and threw out the ones that came with it. All in with pressure treated lumber and everything it was a little over 300$ for 2 12 foot benches that seats a ton of people. You can't beat that

I ripped off ideas from two people on this review string - the one that painted the frame an iron color (which is a huge improvement from obvious plastic), and the one that stained and added the seal. Doing those two things made this come together really well.

On the other hand some of the instructions are just - dumb- and to screw in the seat is fairly annoying in it's angle. It could use improvements. Good concept though.
I used 6 foot 2x4's and bought two of these to make for a 6 foot picnic table OR 2 6 foot benches. I'll have to add pics soon.

I purchased it to make a 5 year wedding present for my wife.... the 5 year is WOOD, so aside from some dirty jokes I had to find something that would be a nice addition to the outdoor living. It makes a nice romantic setting under ou tree which is hung with patio lights and ferns, I would recommend

Super fun and easy project. I framed mine in with cheap pine and sprayed with water sealer. Has better look then pressure treated lumber. Next one I will try PVS boars like some suggest but worth it. People ask about it all the time.

I constructed this in about 2 weeks, but it only took that long due to the amount of time and effort I put into staining and varnishing the lumber. Afterwards, assembly of the bench/table itself only took about 2 hours by myself. Although an extra set of hands would have been nice when attaching the top & bottom. The pictures show a 6' bench using Espresso Stain from Minwax, and 4 coats of Epifanes Clear Varnish

Clear Varnish. It required a second 500 ml container of the varnish, with the 1st coat cut about 50% with Xylene, and the 2nd coat cut about 25%. Coats 3 & 4 were straight up.

These really are a great product. Easy to build and the instructions are more than sufficient. I made a bench for my daughter and her husband who are the Bluest Kentucky Wildcat fans alive. The concept was simple: a UK themed bench that could convert to a table for use by the pool. My only changes to the design were to substitute 2 2x6's for three 2x4's in the back/table and I added a border trim (an idea I got from another reviewer, see below). The brackets were cleaned, lightly sanded, primed and painted white. The paint has had to be touched up many times as any contact seems to cause chipping. I routed out the area for the tin sign in the back (sign available on Amazon and many other themes are possible - my next is Fender Strats). I added 20 or so coats of exterior poly so it shines and is impervious to weather (he claims with fingers crossed). For grins and giggles, I added EL Wire (looks like neon and a bottle opener and cap catcher to the bench back. The controller for the lights is held by a Roku remote holder, luckily with cat ears. Almost forgot - the front spreader was simple to carve before assembly and highlighted in Wildcat blue. Fun to build (except for the poly), I can't wait to start another one. You can't go wrong with these brackets, although getting them to hold spray paint is a challenge.

Best Bench for Less Thank $100 Bucks!

I think this is the best park bench that can be had for less than $100 bucks. It took me about two and half hours to put together. I painted the frames which added huge to the overall visual appeal of the bench. I made a six foot bench which is plenty long enough and it turned out to be very stable. I used treated lumber, which added to the overall weight, but it should make the unit last a long time. I stained it with Minwax Dark Walnut 2716 and after it dried I stenciled on (designer stencil C009) a grapevine pattern. Afterwards I finished up with a Rust-Oleum Marine Spar Varnish. I think the project turned out well and it looks great in my vineyard. Now I have a nice quite place to pray, read my Bible and learn more about The Vine. I've added a couple of before and after pictures. As you can see it looks good natural or stained. The great thing about this bench frame is that if you have the time and a little creativeness you can make it your own.
