Works well, until connector fails - manufacturer needs to upgrade to brass fitting.

Excellent product, but with a crucial flaw in hose connection hardware.

I connected it to a 75 -foot drinking water safe hose and put the waterer out back as "bait" for wild animals passing along a game trail behind the house, where I capture them on a trail camera. Works a treat, four years now, and no leaks; no problems. I braced it with rebar and wire so that animals would not turn it over and cause it to run continuously.

June 2018 update - after four and a half years, the hose fitting broke and leaked fast for a day before I discovered it. Luckily it was out back where all the water did no harm. The weakness is the plastic female to female hose fitting - over time the tension of tightened garden hose threads finally cracks the fitting in the middle (see photo) . The fix: ordered a female to female all brass adapter (3/4 hose to 1/2 pipe thread) available on Amazon for 6 bucks. Photo shows original failed connector on right, and replacement all brass one on left. Make sure to use teflon pipe tape on valve threads and on hose threads.

Fantastic!

Our two huskies go through water like it's going out of style, the larger one even tends to "dig" in it. We had a large 5 gallon water feeder we were using in the kitchen and were filling it up daily and had towels all around it for them playing in it. We actually talked about making our own automatic water filler connected to the hose outside until I found this, and I'm so glad we did! We have had it for a few weeks now and it's just so much easier. Cleaning it is a breeze, just flipping it upside down will get out any dirt or loose particles since it is filling up to wash itself out the whole time. Or for a deeper clean you can just turn off the water to the hose and disconnect it for a little bit for cleaning. Since its outside we don't have to worry about towels around the bowl for messy drinkers or playing in the bowl. I was pleased with how quickly the dogs and cat took to it. I thought at first they might be scared of the sound of it filling while they are drinking but they ran right up to it while we were installing without hesitating. I was also worried about leaks, since the water is technically always on now, but after a few weeks keeping an eye on it we still don't see any leaks. We have both water bowls but noticed the dogs now ball to go outside to drink the water outside, once we get the dog door reinstalled we are going to actually get rid of the large one inside and just keep this one. So much easier and cleaner than traditional bowls, great for multiple pets!!

Probably need to buy more parts......

I got this yesterday based on its better reviews than some others. Some of its bad reviews were related to the bowl leaking at the hose connection. I now know why that is. It should thread right on to the male 3/4 inch hose threads, (which are slightly more coarse than a 3/4 inch pipe thread.) However, the female threads are 3/4 inch PIPE threads and therefore, too fine to properly grip the common hose threads. Any Ace Hardware, or ohers, will sell you the pieces you need to correct this issue, (about $5.00-$6.00). This is the only issue I've had so far, once I got it properly threaded, with the right pieces, there was no more leaking at the connection. The manufacturer really needs to correct this issue and send the product out with the right part. I used to work in a hardware store, so I'm familiar with this kind of stuff, others who may not be, will simply say it leaks, and and send it back.

It outlasted me!

We've had this about 10 years now and it is still going strong! We've had no problems other than a build-up of mildew inside the covered area which breaks off in black chunks into the water unless I unscrew the cover and thoroughly clean it. We live in a humid climate so the problem comes back quickly. I'm also starting to be concerned about the plastic leaching especially since it is outside, so it's time for it to retire. It served it's purpose and was a great buy!

Almost good.

Two ways to improve:
1) The connector where the host connects uses a small gray plastic adapter. I don't think the threading is good on that adapter. My pet bumps into the hose and the hose pulls out and disconnects. Lots of water wasted that way.
2) Would be nice to have some holes on this item to allow screwing/nailing/wiring it to base so pet can't move it around so much.

Works good for the price

The hose connector is not a swivel and just screws onto a male plastic increaser to a female garden hose thread. I needs a small shut-off with a swivel. Also if you over-tighten the hose it swivels the float. I think you need to seal the threads from the IP fitting to Garden Hose fitting with teflon tape if it leaks. Works good for the price. A few modifications and it is reliable. The manufacture needs to add a swivel female garden hose thread connector for the hose and it would be perfect.

pretty good water dish for our lab.

It's primarily plastic, which is kind of a turn off for me, although I knew what I was getting when I bought it. Price was fair. Works well. Adjustable float mechanism easy to set. Works similar to a toilet tank float. We have a full grown lab. There are larger water bowls that self-fill, but my thought on getting this 2 quart bowl even though we have a larger dog is that his water would always be fresh. Bought a quick connect hose attachment, so I can quickly disconnect empty out and quickly clean. I read on either this product or similar products about people having issues with leaking. It's important to not over-tighten connections as that will distort the rubber washer and lead to potential leaks. I had to tinker with the connections for a few minutes to stops leaks, but no big deal. I gave four stars instead of five because Iworry about the durability of the part that connects the hose to the bowl being all plastic and not seeming very "heavy-duty". Time will tell.

Very good, but not perfect

I am now on my third one of these waterers. I go through about one each year but this does not mean the product is bad. I use them to water a dozen chickens that I raise and they are a little rough on the unit -- they love to stand in the waterer and also peck at it a lot -- that's what chickens do. Also, I live in the Phoenix area with temperatures in the 100 degree range for months on end. This takes a toll on the plastic unit and it usually starts to leak or crack after about a year's use even though it is in the shade. I've tried metal versions and they are not as good as the water here is very hard and corrodes the units much quicker than the heat and chickens destroy the plastic waterer. I do wish the unit was a bit heavier or had some way of being attached to the ground as it sometimes gets knocked over causing small floods. I think this might be a problem if it is being used for dogs. It definitely has to be used outdoors, and the instructions do state that, to prevent occasional flooding. I also wish the hose attachment was able to swivel as this would make attaching the hose much easier. These are minor complaints. It is very easy to clean and is a good value for the price.

Cool idea, poor plastic on the hose fitting

Cool idea, poor plastic on the hose fitting. 4 months in and it just leaks water out the hose connection and no amount of plumbing tape will fix it. Find one with a metal hose connector and that handle the pressures of you hose.

Great auto-fill bowl
by KD (5 out of 5 stars)

This is my second type of auto water dish and I really like this one. It sits right on the ground and is really stable. At first, my husband complained that the color showed the dirt and mold but then he realized that he should clean it if he can see dirt or mold (our previous one was black and so it 'hid' dirt and mold which probably wasn't a good thing). I suggest if you get this that you get a valve for your hose that restricts the water flow into the bowl so it doesn't put so much pressure on the floater valve. I haven't had an issue but had read that somewhere when I got my first automatic water dish and heard that it extends the life of the bowl. I also read some comments before buying this bowl that said that the bowl is a bit small. I have two big dogs and think it is the perfect size. Any bigger and the water would stay hot for too long in the summer. Also, since it autofills so quickly, it wouldn't need to be bigger anyway.
