Beware - Manufacturer's Warranty is Suspect!
by Bobby Peru (1 out of 5 stars)
June 10, 2018

This is the third unit of this model I have purchased over the years. The other two have been working flawlessly for several years, and I was very pleased with their performance and value for the purpose. Based on this I purchased a new unit for a new home I recently moved into. The unit worked fine for about 6 months, after that the unit would not open reliably after inserting the code onto the keypad--sometimes it would open, sometimes it would not. I had indeed ensured that the unit had a fresh 9 volt battery in it. Obviously this is unacceptable for a gun safe that you may require to one day save your life--it has to open reliably every time or you may be in trouble when you need help the most. Since it was 6 months since I bought it through Amazon and the return window had passed, I made contact directly with the manufacturer, Cannon Safe, who stated that they offer a 5 year manufacturer's warranty for product defects, which this clearly was. The original customer service person I spoke with took down all my info and requested a copy of my original receipt, which I provided. He told me I would be receiving an e-mail within a couple of days providing shipping details for the replacement. Several days passed, so I sent a follow up e-mail to him and asked status--no response. A week after the original call I called again and spoke with a different person despite asking to speak with the original guy I had dealt with. This new person began by saying that they would not be able to replace the unit because that was Amazon's responsibility. I informed him that Amazon's policy was a 30 day return window, and thus the manufacturer would be responsible assuming they had a written warranty, which Cannon Safe clearly had. He changed his tune after that and said he would be escalating this incident to his supervisor to see what they could do about replacing the defective unit. Later he e-mailed me asking for all of the information again that I had already provided to his cohort in customer service. He told me to expect an e-mail in a few days from them providing shipping details for the replacement. If I ever receive that I will provide a follow up to this review. For now, I feel like I really got the run-around from Cannon Safe.

Follow-Up Review - 6/14/18: After all the hassle, I must report that I finally received my replacement unit today from Cannon Safe and it seems to open properly so far.

I thought I was buying the Deluxe model which would come with a low battery warning and an AC adapter, but instead I got the base model. Not sure how that happened but I was charged the lower price so no big deal. Regardless, I didn't think the issue was worth returning, so I kept it. I definitely did not want the Biometric version because I have read too many bad reviews that the fingerprint technology can sometimes not work, or that any finger can open it. Didn't want to take that chance, I'm sure in 10 years the technology will improve. Back to my base model, I have to say I like it and I recommend it. The only issue is the battery placement. You cannot see where the battery is supposed to go, you have to feel for it. There is a clip up in the ceiling of the safe but the batter doesn't fit well into there. It will slide out easily. So basically the 9-volt battery is just sitting on top of 1/2" of foam and the weight of it makes the foam sag from the ceiling. I ended up just letting the battery hang down. Other than this the safe is great. There are 4 sturdy buttons, they make a sound when you press them and btw that sound can be turned off if you desire. You can enter up to 6 "entries" and each entry can be a single button push or a combination of up to 4 buttons pushed at once. So for example you can push the first 2 buttons together followed by just the 4th button followed by all 4 pushed at once, etc. I'm confident that the baby will not be able to figure out my code. Your fingers fit into the grooves so you can do your code with your eyes closed, or in the dark. Once the code is entered the spring-loaded door flies open quickly and loudly. Some other reviewers mentioned that they wanted a quieter safe, well you might have to shut off the button sound and also have your hand in front of the door to stop the spring-loaded door from banging onto something. I did quite a lot of research before buying this, I looked at NRA-recommended safes, more expensive safes, etc. I'm pretty happy with this and I think you will be too. Maybe just be sure you are getting the model that you expect to get before pressing "submit"

The perfect design for securing pistols around the house
by GR8Dane (5 out of 5 stars)
November 22, 2017

The only gun safe I will use. These are perfect to mount vertically on the side of the bed. I also keep one mounted near each door of my house. I have a double gun version at my main entrance for my visitors that like to store their EDC while relaxing at my place. You can fit two regular frame pistols in the standard size, but it's tight and they can rest on top of each other. The double safe holds a lot and includes a shelf to keep them separated. I have my double laying flat and it easily holds 4 pistols and some extra mags. There is a low battery indicator when you open the safe, but I swap mine out every year when I do my smoke detectors. The keypress combinations can be kept really simple and I feel a lot more comfortable opening these in a hurry in the dark than any keyed or biometric safe.

Neat little vault, great value, cool features.

Fantastic safe. A little small, but it is a "mini vault"

The keypad works every time, and the door opens very, very quickly. This is some fairly thick steel, save for the door.

A neat little feature is the ability to tell if someone tried to open it. If you hold down the 2 and 3 buttons at the same time for about 3 seconds, the LED will light either green or red. If green, no one entered a wrong combination. If red, someone tried to put in a code and it didn't work. Very useful if you have nosy roommates or children.

edit: for size, I'm able to fit a Walter P22, XD-9 Subcompact, and an M&P Shield, plus two extra magazines.

Unreliable - Save your money...
by D (1 out of 5 stars)
April 20, 2015

PROS: It is built well, functions well and is a great way to have a loaded handgun safely stowed.

CONS: unreliable due to POOR BATTERY LIFE from 9V battery

The concept of the GV1000S is good and overall I WOULD HAVE given this product a 4 star review, BUT... after one year of use/testing, this product has been unreliable due to the rapid battery drain at very very low use. As a result, I have to go find the override key and open the mini vault to change the 9V battery, which eliminates any quick access to the mini vault.

Some context of my 1 star rating, I have three other similar mini vaults around the home which I used to compare: a GunVault "Home Safe SV 500" (which is 5 star review without a doubt) and a couple of lower end mini vault products by Fortress (that have a 8 AA battery cell). The SV500 and Fortress all outlast the battery life the GV1000S by months. The GV1000S is used the least by far and the SV500 even has an LED light. For that, I would say, save your money and get a different model that won't leaved you locked out!

Change the batteries every 6 to 12 months!

I love these safes safes! We have several of them around the house. At first, they worked perfectly, but after about 6 months or a year, the lock mechanism stopped releasing. I got so annoyed because I thought they were all breaking! I called the manufacturer about replacing "broken" units and she said to make sure that the batteries are replaced every 6 to 12 months with alkaline batteries. Sure enough, as soon as I replaced the batteries, they all started working again! I'll be sure to replace the batteries frequently so they continue to work well.

DOES NOT deter burglars!
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)

This safe is useless. My house was broken into and this safe did not deter the thief from my gun. They ripped the cable completely off, bent the top, broke the lock and took the gun, no problem. Do not think your gun will be protected with this safe. Would only be good for keeping young kids away from your gun. I will not be purchasing this brand ever again.

It works well, but the foam inside on top not great.
by Randj (4 out of 5 stars)
July 17, 2019

The safe works great. So the foam is the issue, but that's a small issue. In the top of the inside, there's a sheet of foam that is held in place with a sort of sticky tape, but it does not stick well. It was already pulled loose at the front of the box when I first opened it. What's worse, the directions for putting in the 9v battery (included Duracell) tell you to reach to the back and pull the foam down and forward to expose the battery location without pulling the foam loose at the front. Well its already loose at the front, so I'm basically pulling the foam completely out at this point. Guess what: the foam isn't going back in on mine. It's the top, so it isn't like something sits on it. There' also a sort of foam block as part of it that seems to just take up space near the back, so that came out with it. Don't sweat it. Once the foam is out, you can snap on the battery connector, and then the batter mounts in a clip that's a little hard to fiddle with since you have to reach inside and do it in the blind, but not crazy. Without the foam in place now, the battery wire can be left hanging and might snag on items moving in/out of safe, so wrap the wire around the battery once before clipping the battery in place. Otherwise, the box construction is nice, seems pretty heavy, and works very well. When the combination is put in, the door sort of pops open with spring action. If you anticipate wanting to do this without noise, you'll want to put a hand on the door as it opens to ease it. Good luck.

Works but...
by Ryan (1 out of 5 stars)
January 21, 2019

So this safe works but I would not call it good quality. I have had the company send me three units and all three have had the foam falling off. The first unit just stopped opening with the keypad and thank god it has a key. The second one did not close right and this one is working but as you can see the foam is falling down like an old car headliner. Does it work? YES. Was it affordable? YES. If I could do it again would i buy this? NO, i would not buy this product I'd go with a different item or style.

Highly recommend!
by Hispeed68 (5 out of 5 stars)

I have two of these and a third, smaller, one for my truck and love them. I highly recommend having a more complicated code though... rather than a simple four single digit code. You can setup multiple digit codes (up to simultaneous two, three, or four digits as one part of your 4 digit code). These have a power adapter that is perfect for a permanent mounting in a closet but the batteries last forever (over 2 yrs in my case on one occasion before I could change them). I trust these so much that I purchased one for a family member who has small children and purchased a new gun. Highly recommend and trust!
