WOW! Just what I need!
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

Such quality item! Before purchasing this item, I bought a similar set made by Acme at the nordstromrack store online. I'm not sure if it's the same Acme brand that makes whistles or not, but the built was terrible in the sense that the it looks like it was a roughly used item even though I opened it brand new. The knife of the Acme set was rather dull. Onto the Ka-bar...

Size: As others have mentioned in the reviews, this set is kind of small. IMHO, it's better that it's small because it's made for travelling, not for everyday use at home. If people go for camping, the SPOON will not do well if you want liquidy soup. Might as well bring the bowl up to your face and slurp up all the low viscosity soup. I would imaging it wouldn't be a problem eating beans or chunky food.

The KNIFE as other reviewers is very sharp, feels stable in the hand, and it locks securely in place with a release button and the end of the handle. If you're right-handed, the spoon will be in the palm of your hand and I think you get a better grip of the knife that way. When it's split up into 3 pieces, it does not feel awkward to hold in the hand like the Acme knife above. It still feels really nice and compact. Feels like a standalone knife.

The FORK! It simply is a compact fork. Not a fancy fork, but does its job. One thing I like about the idea of having a flat fork like this is that it folds into the handle just like the knife. It really is user friendly this way because we often eat with just either a fork or a spoon or use just a single item like a knife. One side protrude for the spoon is enough, can you imaging using a knife when you have the 2 bulges on both sides of the handle? I think it's smart to fold the fork in so that we can just use only the spoon, fork, or knife without feeling awkward and without splitting it up into 3 pieces everytime. Another thing I like about the fork is that... IT has a can bottle opener. I can use it to open a bottle of beer :D.

The CARRYING CASE! I have to say that the people from Ka-Bar did think of everything. The case is designed so that you can run your belt through and have it securely attached to the pants. It's a tough little pouch! I absolutely love everything about this Ka-bar knife, and it will be extremely useful having it while vacationing in the South East Asia in a few weeks which it will be used for eating exotic fruits, seafood, and stuffs in the rural locations or places where forks, spoons, and knives are not readily available....

You Need One Of These!!!

I admit to buying this thing more as a novelty than anything else but it's actually a very well made tool (it is a Ka-Bar after all). It's 100% stainless steel so it's extremely rust resistant and definitely made to last (no bent utensils here!). You can use it with the handle if you just need one of three utensils or disassemble it to use all three individually. It's definitely more comfortable to unfold just one utensil, such as the spoon, with the others still folded into the handle but it's not too bad using them individually. It comes apart pretty easily leaving you with a spoon, fork and a knife. Each utensil unfolds into a size that all but the huge handed can comfortably use. The fork has a bottle opener built into it which is a plus for those "roughing it" outings that have beer lol. The knife blade will need sharpening if you want it to be "pocket knife" sharp but I left mine as is since it's plenty sharp for cutting food. Once you're done with dinner you can clean your utensils and assemble them back into their original compact size.

Let's be honest here, these utensils aren't perfect. The spoon is pretty shallow and a little small. The fork is also a little small and isn't going to work as well as a kitchen fork. The knife is actually pretty good and, being a real Ka-Bar, would likely take a nice edge but it's definitely not a Wustoff steak knife. However, all that said, it's a folding stainless steel multitool utensil set compact enough to carry in your pocket or on your belt and that is AWESOME!!! While your buddies are struggling to get through their charred can of Beanie Weenies with a plastic spork, you can lay out your stainless knife, spoon and fork while enjoying your meal like a king or queen!!

Serves Lunch Like A Boss
by Danil Chul (5 out of 5 stars)

Long ago I had a utensil knife that I lost and couldn't find a suitable replacement. Then I found this little workhorse. First off, I love the hardy belt pouch. Well built.

I recently ate some dehydrated Chili Mac with the spoon right out of the bag. It wasn't so short that my hand was covered in sauce from the bag. It was just right. The spoon has a polished finish that doesn't allow food to stick. Brilliant. The knife is a typical KaBar, if you love on it, it will cut your steak right out of the box and forever more. The fork seems small, but what I learned is the average fork is really quite large, this one does quite well.

Cleanup is easy. The entire frame soaps and rinses off easily with a bit of thumb work. Let it sit out in the air to dry after you dab it off with your shirt. Don't let it get puddles that stick around for days or it'll rebel.

All in all, this is a good blade with good utensils and is a solid purchase. Love it!

Best 18 dollars I've ever spent

I brought this to Burning Man since I knew I'd need silverware for myself. Day after day it proved to be useful. The knife is extra sharp, even cutting through plastic cases and tie wraps, the spoon doesn't make the size too large, and while the fork could use another tine, it was still great for me.

I even found out 4 days in that the pieces can separate, instead of being a single bulky item, which made me love it even more.

Can't recommend this thing enough.

Oh, and I lost the carrying case on day 1, so... Can't tell anything about that.

A nice tool for your inner "hobo"
by Leon S. (5 out of 5 stars)
December 5, 2017

I am well pleased with this Kabar hobo tool! It's smooth finish on the scales feels good in my hand. The three sections are not difficult to slide apart and yet stay together well. Closed it is about as thick as my three layer Victorinox "Super Tinker" Swiss Army Knife, and perhaps a 1/8" longer.

The spoon is a pinch smaller than a teaspoon. The three prong fork is nice and is a perfect size for eating Vienna Sausages. The knife came sharp!

It doesn't have a can opener, so I simply slid a P-51 into the sheath with it.

This is going inside my EDC "old man's" bag for those occasions that I need it.

Forget the $5 alternatives

Pros:
* SOLID
* Excellent SHARP knife. You could easily use this instead of a utility knife in your pack. (Though you may void your warranty using it for non-food purposes.)
* Feels like a BIFL (Buy It For Life) item.

Cons:
* Spoon & fork are a little small. This may bother some people.

After getting two of the SE KC5006S 4-Inch Camping Steel Detachable Knifes on Amazon for my husband and I to go hiking with, I was very disappointed in the quality. They were cheap, dull, flimsy and I couldn't imagine it lasting more than a season.

The Kabar Hobo, however, impressed me before I even opened the box-- with my hubby's comments.

Husband: "You bought a Kabar???"

Me: "Yeah, why?"

Husband: "Those are standard issued military knives."

Me: "Really? Do they come with spoons attached too?"

So HE was thinking of the combat knives and though disappointingly I didn't get a knife that could slaughter a bear, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the hobo knife. This set just feels good in your hand. I don't mind at all that the spoon and fork are smaller (see my comparison pictures in the Customer Images section) and I couldn't imagine using one of those titanium sporks after something as nice (and affordable) as this.

It takes some getting used to taking apart the set--you slide up the spoon and fork from each side of the knife--and it should be noted that it's a locking knife, you need to depress the bottom latch in order to open or close the knife. I highly recommend it to anyone hiking, backpacking, or camping.

Rusted out!

This is not a high grade stainless steal. Bought it for my husband to put in his work lunch box and use on the construction site. Rusted out after 2 weeks, even with washing and care as instructed. The knife is sharpe af too. Wouldn't reccomend.

Heavy and frozed
by rtsc (1 out of 5 stars)
May 6, 2016

When this hobo came, the fork cannot be separated from the set. It is so tight that tool was required to separate the fork. The blade was problematic as well. Once it was open, it cannot be unlocked and closed. I finally had to take part the whole thing with tool, clean and oil some area to get thing working again.

Low quality workmanship.

And if this is for camping, it is too heavy.

Best of my comparison tests
by Sparky911 (5 out of 5 stars)
September 28, 2016

Originally purchased this, the CRKT Eat N Tool, and the Light My Fire titanium spork in May 2016 for a comparison test. This is by far the best of the bunch. 3 separate utensils that fold up into a package about the size of a standard swiss army knife. Each piece has a locking mechanism to prevent accidental folding. No frills (other than a bottle opener) and does what it does very well. Compactness when folded is just shy of 1 inch wide and under 3 inches long. Opened each part is right about 4.25 inches OAL.

PROS: Kinfe blade e is VERY sharp and being Ka-Bar it should stay that way for a really long time. Fork is very sturdy and will poke into tough meat with ease. All stainless steel construction so it should last near forever. Interlocking the tools for storage is very good. Nylon carrying case a plus.

CONS: Spoon ladle could be deeper (spoon is a tertiary tool anyway for me). Interlocking the tools can take some finagling to get apart, they lock together almost too well. There was some sort of oil/lube on it when first opened. Washed with dish soap, solved.

Its definatly a Kabar
by Tin Man (4 out of 5 stars)
January 21, 2015

I go camping whenever possible so me and my wife decided one day to upgrade to backpacking / Motorcycle camping. A friend of mine we went with one time showed this set to me. For the price it was a no brainer I bout a set and tried it out. Nice sleek and convenient are just some of the words I would use. its everything you need all in one go and has more than lived up to its worth and its name. Kabar has always been a quality brand.

Warning: I will say this much the knife is sharp out of the box and opens firmly I don't recommend using it unless you have separated it into its 3 pieces as the fork or spoon may detach while cutting something. " I got myself pretty good when the spoon detached while I was using it to cut up some tough meat." Long and short this product is 3 separate pieces that attach to each other for portability and convenience they are not 1 item that comes apart.

The only thing that kept me from giving this item 5 stars is the locking mechanism. when you attach these pieces back together into one part several times they tend to get a bit loose and don't hold the pieces together anymore. I discovered his on the 5-6 trip I took with the set. but if you are like me you clean them as soon as your done and put them back in your pouch problem solved.
