Effective Zorrel fabric gives good coverage.

I work professionally in woods, meadows, streams, and wetlands, and also happen to be particularly attractive to all sorts of nuisance insects. As in, we're standing around afield, in a group, and I am the guy covered in insects like a water buffalo. The Zorrel shirts work effectively on the areas that they cover and a bit around the periphery of the hems. My experience is that they do not create a magical bug-free aura around your body. For someone like me, who gets bitten by mosquitoes through his clothes, the shirt works. I have yet to pick up a tick on the fabric either, which for me is a huge benefit as tick-borne diseases are a real professional hazard. I have both long-sleeve and short-sleeve versions and augment with bug spray (typically Centaura, a really good man-and-beast spray) as needed - especially around the periphery of the fabric if I am in tick habitat (see Japanese barberry, Berberis thunbergii, work at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies). The fabric is heavier than I expected but I imagine it provides more micro-surface area for the treatment versus a regular t-shirt-weight fabric. Ultimately, using the Zorrel fabric reduces your exposure to aerosol insecticides but for many of us won't eliminate it. And that's OK.

Going on an African safari? Buy this shirt!

A wonderful insect repellent shirt -- which I bought for an African tour. Launders well, fits very comfy, and helped keep the insects away. I can highly recommend these shirts, I bought several.

Good price for a great product

**This is a unisex shirt (or at least plain enough that we girls can wear it, too) with men's sizing. For reference, I'm tall and usually a women's M and the small fit well -- after the first wash, it was a little loose but snug enough for active endeavors. I bought it because the price was lower than other Insect Shield shirts and because I didn't want to be dressed like a 50-year old tourist (camp shirts, awkward fitting button-downs, etc). I just wanted a plain shirt that would work for a variety of outdoor activities.

PROS:
-Keeps the bugs away. First tested this out in the rain forest. To be fair, I was also using Insect Repellent
. But when I was hiking, everyone who had showered in Deep Woods Off still had a few bites, while I did not. Didn't see any bugs land on me then die, though. It was more like there was a protective bubble around me, while my friends were constantly swatting at bugs.
-Packs well. Bought an extra one that lives rolled up in my bag, just in case (and those cases have been many).
-Dries quickly. Hand washed on a trip and it was dry by morning, even in a humid area. When on, the moisture wicking properties work pretty well, too.
-For the ladies: It doesn't scream "functional clothing." To compare: the Ex Officio Insect Shield shirts look like I went vacation shopping at Orvis. In other words, they might be OK when I'm in the jungle 1000s of miles from home and desperate for a piece of clothing that works, but I wouldn't wear one once I returned home. With the Zorrel one, I can go for a jog, sit out on the patio, etc. (= more uses AND a lower price.)

CONS:
-It has some synthetic fibers along with the cotton, so it's not the softest, but it's still comfortable.
-It eventually loses effectiveness

BOTTOM LINE:

Great adjunct to bug spray, etc if you're in an area with malaria and a great way to skip the smelly bug spray if you're walking the dog or in the backyard.

The XXL Runs Small
by exmptle (2 out of 5 stars)

I bought a XXL shirt to be on the safe side. It is too small, definitely not XXL. I wear an XL comfortably with LLBean clothing. This shirt is pretty tight in the arms, shoulders, and chest. It appears to be made for someone with slender arms, a big belly, and not much in the way of chest and shoulders. On the positive side it seems to be very well made and does breathe. I plan to keep it, but I won't buy another one.

If mosquitoes love you they won't like this shirt

Not 100% effective (mosquitoes REALLY love me) , but about 99% is good enough for me. Minnesota state birds are having a lot less of my blood this season thanks to this shirt. I'm going to buy pants with the same bug shield on them, too, I'm very satisfied with this.

Fit is tight, but the product seems to work for me

Fit was a bit tight - got XL this year - but in the past had 2XL which fit better (bit more loose in my case). Whether the shirt works or not might be subjective - all I will say is that I wear them daily - and have never gotten a mosquito, fly or tick bite on torso and arms. As for longevity - I wash them in cold water.... approx. once a week.... the ones that are over a year old still work.

Mosquitoes Begone
by Richard III (5 out of 5 stars)

My entire family of five wore these shirts for three days in Liticia, CO smack on the Amazon River. We used repellent on hands, face and neck and let the shirts do the rest. We had two mosquito bites on unprotected skin and no bites through the shirts. These shirts worked like a charm and we were in canoes deep in the rain forest for one entire day and on the river and islands in the river for the other two. So glad I bought this product.

Too hot

I live in Houston, and this thing is like wearing a sweatshirt in the summertime. Maybe OK in the winter, but there are no mosquitoes then. I prefer a light, breathable shirt in the summer, like polyester. That is enough to keep the mosquitoes off, and is a lot more comfortable.

Don't bother. Just buy a shirt this type and spray insect repellent on it.

The shirt is nice enough but it doesn't protect me from mosquitoes. I was hoping it does. it's useless. I am using it in Chumkiri, Cambodia, in the heart of a mosquitoes infected area. You can trust me. I live with and breathe in mosquitoes. You can go outside and look for the stars but before you can even find one the mosquitoes already landed on your face and neck. You can feel they fly right into you. That's how much mosquitoes we have. This shirt will not help you one bit.

Insect Shield shirt

The shirt just came today. I was a little concerned after going on Zorrel's website for their fit specs, but after trying it on it feels like it was tailored for me. Super fit, super comfortable. This shirt is going to be a definite favorite; especially in the garden. We have a record-breaking year locally for mosquitoes and ticks, and I've been spraying down my clothes with permethrin, but this is much more convenient and less expensive than using spray after every six washings. It might not work as advertised, but I'm confident it will. I'll report back with the verdict. Well, Amazon will only allow me to do one review on a product, so I'm going to edit my original in an attempt to supply a status report. Bottom line, it worked really well during a turkey hunt. Tons of mosquitoes, but none on me. What it will not do is keep pests off unprotected skin. You'll want some DEET or the equivalent around your eyes, ears, ect. And, it is a little warm, but the pest repellent aspect trumps that. I can sweat a little. Does the shirt work as advertised and would I buy it again? Yes.
