The product description does not emphasize one of its best features. I got this because I was looking for a small 3-prong power switch that I could plug into a power strip. Long story, but I wanted to turn one thing on and off without affecting anything else plugged into the power strip. Switches like this with 2 prongs are out there. Ones with 3 prongs are either non-existent or very hard to find. This device does what I needed. It has the three prongs. Hit the power button once to provide 60 minutes of current to whatever is plugged into it. Hit the button a second time and the current is cut off. So the power button serves as a very convenient toggle switch. Also, when the power is on, a bright red pilot light is activated. Thus from a distance, you can immediately tell whether your iron, heater, or whatever, is on or off. Hard to see the pilot light in the product image -- it's in the middle of the egg timer thing. The device seems to be very well-constructed. It's a lot heavier than I thought it would be. Very pleased so far.
2015 Update: The device failed on 11-3-15. Something burned out inside. There's brown residue on the back with an odor. Can't make any kind of electrical connection, although the pilot light still comes on. Anyway, 41 months of use before failure. Was still a very handy device, but would have expected it to last longer.

What I'm not understanding is that the device I purchased is completely different from what's pictured on the Amazon page. What's being sold is obviously something different from what I reviewed. Downgrading to three stars because this doesn't look like the product I purchased and reviewed.

Misleading Photo

Works as advertised but doesn't look as advertised. Mine came without any timer markings. The Amazon photo shows hour numbers under each of the five LED lights, mine is blank. Quality problem - misleading photo? I don't know but it's a minor inconvenience that I corrected by just writing the numbers on the unit with a marker. Wouldn't buy again.

Extra feature makes it excellent

One unknown about this 'simple' device was if you want to end power before the 60 minutes expires can you simply press the same button used to trigger the start of power and the 60 minute timer? (whew, did you follow that?) The answer is YES! Simply press the same button and it kills the power flow before the end of the 60 minutes. That gave it the 5th star in my book. I would give it 6 big stars if the 60 minutes were adjustable --- 1 to 60 minutes would be great --- and 1 to 240 minutes would be fantastic. Are you listening Simple Touch people? Anyway, the tidbit of info above wasn't clear to me in the description and I was pleased to find the answer after using it. This was just perfect. I have very hard water and live in a condo so not any control over the softener. Tired of cleaning my drip coffee pots every week and hoping they last at least a year, I switched to a percolator. Having automatic shut off for years was afraid of leaving pot on. This little item works really great, easy to use and plugging it in top outlet leaves bottom one open.

Just What We Needed

I bought this for my wife who was often either leaving her curling iron plugged in or just after leaving the house would wonder if she had left it plugged in. This is a very simple solution that gives her piece of mind. She can now plug her curling iron into this timer and have enough time for it to heat up, for her to use it, and then it automatically shuts off. Now she doesn't need to remember to unplug her curling iron or wonder all day at work whether she remembered to unplug it. It is not the most romantic of things to buy for a wife, but it could help prevent our house or just the bathroom from catching fire.

I bought this because I'm one of those people who always leaves the coffee pot on. I can't tell you how many times I've had to return home when I've remembered I forgot (unfortunate wording), but the third time I used it, it failed to turn off. If I can't rely on it to function properly, it's no good to me.

I'm not sure how in this day and age that it can be legal to manufacture fire hazardous products (i.e. flattening iron) without an auto shutoff. It seems that the hotter the flat iron, then the less chance that it will have an auto shutoff.

My wife and her family/friends always forget and leave the extremely hot flat iron on. This thing is a life-saver (possibly literally.) She brought this to her salon where they leave on several flat irons,etc. I previously bought a 'timer' type auto shutoff device from Home Depot. It worked but was too bulky and complicated. This one is as simple as pushing the button. I am going to order a few more.

This has been a life saver I usually steam iron my clothes before going anywhere and in ovation have forgotten it plugged in. But with this i just set it to the time I need and if I forget anything plugged in i not worried because it will turn off the electricity for me.

After forgetting to turn off my new hair straightener too many times I decided to get a timed outlet...this one is the BEST!!! Not only does it turn off after 1 hour, but there is a bright red light on it that shines to remind me to turn it off. And when you plug it into the bottom outlet it leaves the top one free to use for other items. I was taken aback at the cost of this outlet, but it is really well made. Not cheap junk!! And saves you money from the first time you plug it in.
