It's not just a corndog maker!!
by Deborah (5 out of 5 stars)

My husband and I do not like the same brand of hotdogs. With the Corndog maker I made his & hers corndogs and they were great!! I also made just cornbread with it. The family loved the shape and that they were small. I also made Johnny-cakes by using 1 cup of cornmeal mix, 1/2 can of cream corn, 1 egg and enough milk to blend smooth. YUM!

Great except for one thing...

I am a little torn on writing this review between 3 and 4 stars.

The pros: 1) makes decent corn and cheese dogs -- as it should since it's a 1 trick pony 2) Heats up quickly 3) comes with recipe book and sticks

The cons: 1) very difficult to clean because the plates don't come off and can't be submerged. 2) very difficult to clean (yes, I already said this, but seriously, it is difficult to clean).

Brings amusement park food into the home
by Jay Ducharme (4 out of 5 stars)

Finally I was able to make for myself a delicacy that has become hard to find: cheese-on-a-stick. I had tried making my own with a small fryolator, and created a gooey mess. The Smart Planet machine couldn't be simpler: add the batter (I used the Fry Crisp mix), add the cheese and wait about four minutes. Don't expect amusement-park-sized results though. Each piece is about four inches long and about an inch in diameter. I don't know how they expect you to make a corn dog in it, unless the hot dogs are the size of your little finger. As it was, I had to insert a cheese slice that was about two inches long and a quarter inch thick. But I guess since it makes six at once, you basically get the equivalent of two normal size treats. With their size so small, I found I didn't even need to use the sticks. I used a flat wooden spoon to flip them out of the unit when they were cooked and just ate them like finger food. The non-stick coating works beautifully. And the fact that it grills instead of fries makes me feel slightly better about my decadent indulgence.

Corn dogs at home - what's not to like about that?
by JimG (4 out of 5 stars)

This thing is a lot of fun, and you end up with a corn dog. Nothing wrong with that. I used it today for the first time so I had a little learning curve. But overall it does the job, and the results are quite edible.. They're not perfect, but they're not deep fried and oily, and clean up is easy.

There were some tricks. So start out doing just 1 or 2 dogs till you figure out what works for the size of the dogs you have, and for the consistency of your batter.

First how much do you put in the bottom well? Depends on the girth of the dogs. I would say that after you spoon some batter in the well, then place the dog on top float the dog so it doesn't displace the batter too much. You want that batter to flow topside when you close the lid. You guess. That's how much batter you need. Still, knowing how the batter needs to flow around the dog when the lid closes helps you figure it out.

Either before the dog goes in, or after, scoop some batter in each end of the well. There's no dog at the ends so fill in with batter.

I missed the instruction to scoop batter on top of the dog. Duh. Put a goodly amount of batter on top. Not some. You'll figure out how much. It helps if the batter is a little thick. Definitely not runny.

The book leaves you with the idea that 2 minutes ought to get these things kind of cooked. Maybe. But not for me. I had the dogs in there for 7-8 minutes and then I had a nice brown surface. Not as pretty as the picture for this thing, but it was attractive enough to eat.

Hope you have a good time with this, and end up with some great results. Oh, and save a stick from the meal table so you can use the point to dig batter spills out from the crevices.

Absolutely the best - amazing corn dogs, first time!
by Joel Avrunin (5 out of 5 stars)

This may sound like an odd review, but we have been looking for something like this device for a long time. Hot dogs are a great kid-friendly dinner, and surprisingly low in calories and fat if you get chicken dogs. Corn dogs are tons of fun, but frying them is not only not good for you, it makes dinner heavy and greasy. We tried many times to make oven-corn-dogs, but the batter always fell off. It looked very unappetizing. This corn dog device is perfect. We mixed the batter according to the recipe, put the corn dogs (along with the batter), and a few minutes later, perfect corn dogs on a stick. The outside is crisp (with a nice texture), and the inside fluffy. As close as you can get to frying without actually frying.

It could be improved. First, while hot dogs do come in various sizes, these molds are too short for almost any hot dog. We ended up cutting off the ends of all of them, and then making a corn dog composed of 3 end pieces. It did such a nice job with cooking the bread that you couldn't tell which one wasn't a single dog. Second, it would be nice if the plates were removeable for easier cleaning. I'm still giving this 5 stars because I had an awesome dinner with it.

Overall, glad I bought it, and I would buy it again. Single use appliances are generally not my favorite, but corn dogs need this type of device, and everybody needs home-made corn dogs.

Wow.... still loving this corn dog maker. Same comments as above--it's not perfect, but everybody in the family looks forward to corn dog night. We use it about once every 2 weeks. We're still buying standard hot dogs, cutting off the ends, and then making a corn dog of cut-off pieces. Another reviewer suggested buying really long hot dogs and cutting them in half. I like that idea, but not sure if they make long chicken hot-dogs. Go ahead and buy this great device, get some spicy honey mustard, and enjoy!

Very pleased with purchase!

I have a husband, a 16 yo daughter and a 10 year old son and we just cooked our first meal with the Corn Dog Maker. We loved it. The booklet recommended that we grease the surface but it was so non stick we did not do that after the first batch. We could see the hotdogs in our first batch but none of us cared and by filling it less full, subsequent batches had the batter around the hot dog. Yes, sometimes they did not brown as much on top because we had it less full but in all cases they were fully cooked and tasted great. We just used Jiffy corn bread mix for the corn dogs and we also used it to to make pickles. We used spears. Just like other reviewers said, this does not make full size corn dogs...they are 1/2 dog each. We used Hebrew brand reduced fat dogs...and they were perfect to cut in half. We used regular pickle spears and had to cut an inch off. I am very excited to try another batter as well as make pancake/sausage on a stick. We are trying to have variety and eat healthy as a family and while I hate gimmicks, I LOVED THIS! We liked the mini donut maker (the kids more than I) but they make donuts that do not taste like real donuts. The corn dogs though were more similar in taste to a real corn dog...and I prefer them more as they are nongreasy. The recipe book only has a recipe for cornbread batter as well as a way to make a batter with a mix...but you will only be limited by your imagination. For dieters, use leftover corn bread mix to make mini corn bread sticks. Make mini cakes. They say you could bake a snickers in something...I don't know how that would work size wise. I can easily see making cheese sticks though...and I will think of more things to do with this...

Corn Dog Maker I love this thing

Corn Dog Maker

I love this thing. Not only can we follow the recipes included in the booklet to make yummy corn dogs, we can use our own recipes to make other things. We make a muffin mix and plop it into the maker and have excellent little muffin dogs. They freeze great and thaw in about 20 seconds in the microwave. My 2 year old loves them!

It is super easy to clean. Just make sure to wait until it's cooled off to wipe it down. *OUCH*
