That one time, when my Kitchenaid bowl conspired to kill me....
by carrie_anng (2 out of 5 stars)
January 21, 2018

So, I've been using this bowl for over a year now, and my overall feelings regarding this bowl are positive. I love that I can see to gauge whether all of the ingredients have mixed in, and the attachments scrape much closer to the sides of this bowl than the metal bowl. It's easy to clean and made of a nice, thick glass. It fits my Kitchenaid Mixer very well. Has a pour spout that is very convenient.

So why the 2 stars? Because the base detaches from the bowl. If you twist it too tight into the mixer, it will unscrew from the bowl when you twist it to take it out. The first time it happened, I thought the bowl was broken. Called Kitchenaid and they informed me that it would unscrew from the mixer and back on to the bowl. It did (after I had to take a pair of plyers to dislodge it from the mixer), went back on the bowl just fine. No big deal, I am just aware of it now and I don't twist the bowl too tightly into the mixer so it doesn't get stuck again.

And then, an hour ago, I decided to try using my mixer to knead bread. I've never made bread before; total novice. No idea how thick the bread mixture would get, and how much harder my Kitchenaid mixer would have to work to knead the bread using the dough hook. So imagine my complete and total surprise when the bowl all of a sudden came loose from the plastic base (shaken free from the motions of the dough hook). I've got this HEAVY glass bowl just flinging around, attached only by the strength of the bread dough still clinging to the dough hook. My mixer is now bouncing all over the place, trying to keep up with the bowl, and I'm frantically trying to grab one or the other and being terribly unsuccessful until it dawns on me to just unplug the mixer from the wall outlet. Crisis averted (barely). After removing the dough from the bowl, I realized the bowl had been broken in the process. So, I would definitely suggest sticking with your metal bowl for making bread dough or any other equally thick mixture.

While I would still recommend this bowl to anyone with a Kitchenaid mixer, the base coming apart from the bowl is a HUGE design flaw in my opinion. Please fix this, Kitchenaid.

Perfect Bowl

I have no idea why I waited so long to buy this bowl. It's perfect. It twists on and off with no problems like some have stated. No jamming or getting stuck at all. The pour spout is way convenient. The glass is quite thick which I hope means it'll be durable and last(I'm sure it will). I love being able to see through to my ingredients and having the measure marks on the side is so nice too. It is about 1-1.5 inches wider than the original steel bowl it came with(including the spout). I have the artisan 5qt and this fits like a glove.😉 my mixing attachments fit nicely into the bowl for storage. I simply love having a bowl with a lid that snaps on for storage. Like, I seriously love it! No more saran wrap that won't cling...lol It is obviously heavier but that's completely OK with me. No heavier than my cast iron I'm sure. Just a perfect bowl..😍😍 we were obviously meant to be together.....Happy Cooking!

Holy Flying Batter, Batman!!!

Ok, so if youre looking for a slapstick experience out of I Love Lucy, this is your bowl... the good people at KitchenAid evidently had a bad batch of bowl collars and dont know it... while mixing at high speed, the bowl came apart from the collar and pretty much everything within 12 feet was covered in batter... imagine a little panic mixed in with some wth and eventually some airlock laughter. A good time was had by all, but these bowls are going back for a replacement... five stars for the comedy, one star for the construction... fyi, i have two other bowls just like these and have had no issue in the 3 years ive had them.

Have not used the other bowl since I got this one. Love it so much I had to reorder immediately when

I love it so much that when I broke mine while washing it this morning (got a little spazzy with Playtex gloves on and it hit the cast iron sink pretty good) I immediately logged on and ordered a replacement. That's love.

I do make a lot of bread in my KitchenAid (multiple times per week, I almost never buy commercially made bread) and I absolutely love being able to see the dough at the bottom and how it's sticking tells me exactly whether I've got too much or not enough water. I bake bread so much that I can tell based on how it's sticking or cleaning off the side whether I've got enough water in it. I really can't believe I waited so long to buy it.

When I put mine on I wedge it with the pour spout against the mixer head support so that it can't move. If it didn't do that I feel like you might risk banging it around but if you wedge it, it's solid in place and no issues.

The one thing I do miss is the pour spout, not so much for pouring but for keeping the flour in the bowl. What I do is clip a clean towel over the top of it with a chip clip and go to town. I think I'm going to glue or sew some velcro to a towel and have it be a permanent solution. Maybe I'll invent something.

I LOVE the cover and how it keeps the bowl clean. Big time-saver.

In reality though I'd say that even with that one drawback with the pour spout, it's only a half-star off the final grade and I'd say that the fact that I ordered a new one within a half hour of having broken mine is pretty strong evidence that this is AWESOME.

Adjust the baseplate for older mixers.

Beautiful bowl. When I first put it on my (15 year old) tilt head mixer it didn't sit securely in the base plate because the pour spout or handle would hit the side of the mixer before it snapped in. I saw some reviewers in here fixed this by unscrewing the 3 screws on the plate and turned the base plate. Took me 5 minutes and now it fits in nice and snug. Which is good because I WOULD NOT HAVE USED IT otherwise. The bowl wouldn't have been secure and it's a heavy glass bowl and if it flew off the base (like some reviewers have mentioned) it could hurt someone or get broken easily. Just made my first batch of cookies and no problems at all.

Be careful with how tight you try to get the bowl
by Kaleb (2 out of 5 stars)

I'm sure that the bowl is great and works well for many people, but I never got the chance to try it out.

When the package first arrived we spent about 5 minutes getting through all of the packaging.

A quick test showed that we needed to rotate the bass on the mixer as identified in other reviews. Once that was done I went to put the bowl in, I lined everything up and started turning in to lock it into place. I started turning and could feel things getting snug. Expecting a solid stop to signify that the bowl was securely in place, I keep turning. Then the glass in the base cracked.

I'm a large man, but don't think I was putting any excessive force on the bowl.

To me this is a design flaw. The bottom should be made in such a way that there is a definite limit to how far to turn the bowl.

Oh well, I guess we'll stick with the metal bowl for now.

Nice alternative to the stainless bowl that came with my KitchenAid.

I don't necessarily prefer it to the stainless as its heavier, but it does make it easier to see when ingredients are fully mixed. Nice having 2 mixing bowls instead of having to wash and dry between batters and creams etc. Now I can put the stainless in the fridge to chill for the cream while I mix something else.

Also, I've found this a good size for letting bread rise. Never thought of it, but with the marks on the side, it would be easy to check when dough doubled too.

It is solid glass and I don't think it would break or chip unless dropped.

Love my glass bowl. It's nice being able to see what's going on in there. Especially when you need to scrape the side. Great quality.

This is the third one I've bought. This one got a crack and shattered like our last two when blending. We wish they held up a little better.

The plastic disc that that twists on the bottom of this bowl which hold the bowl in place. Does not stay on while in operation. The bowl slips out while the plastic piece is still locked in place on the mixer. It's actually very dangerous. This problem NEVER happened with the original bowl that came with the set. I had to order a new one because I dropped the bowl and it broke. Iam actually going to contact the seller in regards to this issue.
