Quality has deteriorated -- change in manufacturing?
by Dori (1 out of 5 stars)

First, I want to state that this is the 3rd one of these I've purchased. The other two were amazing, wonderful devices that made hulling jam-quantities of strawberries a dream. They had sturdy metal prongs on a well-balanced spring that allowed tough monster-sized strawberries to be hulled as easily as edge-of-overripe tiny gems. The other two were replaced due to loss -- used daily during the 4 months of strawberry season here in CA -- but NOT replaced because of breakage or malfunction, they were sturdy.

THIS most recent one? I could cry at the deterioration in quality. What's up with the cost savings on manufacturing? They ruined a previously great product. THIS one has thin metal prongs that bend and deform with tougher supermarket strawberries, and a cheap spring system that doesn't allow that prongs to open wide enough to be useful on the big berries. Until the manufacturer takes quality-control seriously, don't waste your money on this cheap, useless version.

Works best on medium and larger strawberries

Does not work as well on smaller strawberries, but medium and large ones are a breeze. Might be a little difficult to clean thoroughly though.

So quick and easy!

I love this! It's so fast and easy! Some have said that it doesn't work, but I disagree. I may be biased though because I have been using one for years and just bought this replacement, so I've had a lot of practice with one. If anyone is having trouble, this is the best I can say to help: First, push and hold button. Insert prongs so 1/2 to 2/3 length of prongs are in berry (depending on the size of berry). Then, as you release the button, slowly turn the huller as you push down into the berry slightly, creating a rotating knife basically. When hull is cut out, simply remove huller from berry and press button again to release the cut hull. I find it helpful to pull the leaves off first, but you don't have to. My husband says it's a nifty little tool because there is a lot less berry wasted than when he just uses a knife to cut the hulls out. Overall, I would definitely recommend this!

Disappointing
by Klint (1 out of 5 stars)

Based on the surprising number if positive reviews, I thought this would work the opposite of the way it actually works, which turns out to be not very well.

I guess I figured the teeth would be open in resting position, and then when you push the button, they close to form a cone. Such that you put the berry against it, push the button and it does the job for you.

Instead... You push the button, the unsharpened teeth open up, you have to jam and twist to loosen the hull, then you rely on the weak spring inside to close the teeth and "pull" the hull out for you.

Not worth the money. Save yourself the frustration and use a grapefruit spoon.

Cute, but just OK

I bought this after seeing it on an ad online. They made it look so quick and easy, but I had more trouble than I thought it was worth. I'm more comfortable with a paring knife!

Strawberry Gem!!
by Jenna C. Corridoni (5 out of 5 stars)

After seeing this holler on Americas Test Kitchen I was interested in weather or not it really worked as well as it seemed on the show. But because I don't subscribe to their site I had to do some elbow grease to find out which product this was. Needless to say I found it and after ordering it and waiting the few days for it to come in the mail I used it this morning. I hate the waste that comes from cutting off the tops of strawberries and I've tried the push a straw through the bottom of the strawberry to push off the stem but that was just annoying. This Chef'n StemGem Strawberry Huller is perfect! I pulled out a pint of strawberries this morning and hulled the lot of 'em within a minute! This handy little guy is so very easy to use, and takes out the stem with wasting very little of the berry. I am so, so happy that I bought this product! And it's a bonus that it's dishwasher safe (top rack) and is so small that it won't take up a lot of drawer space!

This is my personal opinion and not of any others. Used my phone to take this picture, hope it's clear enough.

How have I lived without this little gadget?

It works exactly as represented. I know, it is a little time consuming to pull out each stem individually - but! - that said, it goes pretty fast. I de-stemmed a whole bag of delicious strawberries for a fruit salad. It was done in less than half the time I would have had to stand there and cut them out by hand. Just make sure the top of the strawberry is lined up with the plunger. After pulling out the stems I used a slicer tool. I eat a LOT of fruit salad being on Weight Watchers and this is a wonderful gadget.

Every kitchen needs one, this is brilliant!

Ok, this little pit stealer is a game changer! We are a family who lives for smoothies (only way to sneak spinach & kale into my family's diet). Everyone loves strawberries but I hate digging out the leafy stem nor do I want to just lop the top off because you lose too much of the berry. Whoever created this must have really hated it, too! But what a brilliant idea, push the plunger to open the claw, sink it into the berry, release to dig in, simple twist and voila, a topless berry ready for the blender! Every kitchen needs one...this is the perfect stocking, stuffer, too!

Must have for strawberry lovers...

One of the things about big box stores like Sam's Club is they've got the highest quality of meats, fruits and vegetables. I have routinely bought their strawberries over the last several decades. Before serving them I'd cut off the leaves and a portion of the strawberry at the top, but it would leave behind some white that is bitter. I'm thrilled that I can now easily and quickly core my strawberries and remove the bitter parts. You don't have to be coordinated to use this little gem. Press the button, insert it into the top, release the button and twist. That's all there is to it. It's the little things in life that make me happiest and this device makes me smile.

Just doesn't hull like another, slightly more expensive, huller found here on Amazon. Take it from e

After reading all the glowing reviews I purchased one of these from Amazon. I must say, I was looking forward to using this incredible little kitchen tool since I was preparing Strawberry Pies for Easter which required hulling of 8 pounds of strawberries. Well, the device arrived and I proceeded to use it as shown in the videos.

I only made it through 2 lbs. of strawberries before I said to myself, "are you kidding me"? First off you are required to apply force to open the "jaws" of this contraption and then push it into the strawberry through the pedunkle (yes folks, this is what the stem is referred to) and into the pith in order to remove the hull. The problems were as follows: 1.) the jaws open very narrowly and since you are to push into the berry, the curve of the jaws forces them to close so you have to apply some pressure. If you have ripe berries, good luck keeping them from being crushed. 2.) The jaws are not sharp enough to penetrate the pendunkle leaves; same problem as the 1st issue in regard to crushing or attempting to create a deep cavity for stuffing. 3.) While the device provides slip resistance when wet, the shape lacks the ability to provide a natural grip.

Now, being totally frustrated, I made a emergency trip to Bed Bath and Beyond to see what they had and SUCCESS! They had a OXO Good Grips Strawberry Huller like this:

http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Strawberry-Huller/dp/B00I3W2RJO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1398340986&sr=8-2&keywords=OXO+Good+Grips+Strawberry

which you can find, here, on Amazon. While this is just a little more expensive than my initial purchase here, it is head and shoulder above in speed and results. You can easily hull any type of berry, no matter how ripe, in a very quick simple motion and the huller does most of the work. The blades easily cut through the pedunkle and, with a quarter twist and pull, the hull is removed. You depress the plunger and the hull is ejected. No springs here and the only force required is pushing the blades into the berry and lightly depressing the plunger once the hull is removed.

I finished off the last 6 pounds in just a little over the time it took me to do the first 2 pounds with this device. You are also left with a berry that is better suited for stuffing if that is what you intend to do. Buy one of these and check it out for yourselves!

Happy hulling this strawberry season!
