Product Description

When Seconds Matter - be prepared.

Every driver has a concern about being trapped in a vehicle in an accident. First, there is the worry about being unable to release a seat belt because it is jammed or if the release is inaccessible. Second, there are the difficulties of escaping a vehicle that has been submerged in water. Water pressure may make it difficult or impossible to open doors or lower windows until water has seeped in and the internal pressure is equalized.

Custom knife maker Russ Kommer recognized the need for a simple and affordable emergency tool. We call it the ExiTool.

The ExiTool fits unobtrusively onto any standard seat belt with a simple folding clasp. It includes a seat belt cutter, a tungsten carbide window breaker, and a bright L.E.D. flashlight.

The seat belt cutter has been carefully designed so that is nearly impossible for even the smallest fingers to accidentally reach the blade. Its blade is made of Razor-Sharp high-carbon stainless steel, and will cut seat belts in one quick pull.

The side windows of modern vehicles are made of glass which is tempered to shatter on impact. The ExiTool features a small tungsten carbide breaker point. Just grasp the ExiTool body firmly and strike the window to break it. For best results, hit the window as close to the bottom edge as possible.

The breaker has two emergency uses. On dry land, if the vehicle's doors are jammed closed, the breaker can allow instant escape through a side window. If the vehicle is submerged, most safety experts recommend using the air supply which is trapped inside before breaking a window to avoid a sudden onrushing flow of water. However, this will vary depending on the depth of the water and the condition of the passengers. The ExiTool will allow driver or passengers to break the window instantly when it is needed.

The L.E.D. light uses one replaceable CR2032 3-Volt lithium battery. Of course, the flashlight is useful in non-emergency situations, too.

We think every vehicle should have at least one ExiTool.

Great idea - poor execution
by Mark M. Frazier (2 out of 5 stars)

Other reviews said that the tool does not stay attached to your seat belt. I bought it hoping CKRT had improved the design since those reviews. At this time, they have not. These fall off every couple weeks and then you have to dig them out from under your seat. I get that we want them to be easy to pull of the seat belt for an emergency, but I think a positive lock is more important. If my tool is under my seat when the car crashes into a river I would rather have to fight to get it off the seatbelt than desperately look around my car for wherever the tool landed.

I'd love to try out the improved model if you guys make it! Your other products I've purchased were great

I like the idea and bought two of these
by Curtad (3 out of 5 stars)

I like the idea and bought two of these. One for drivers seatbelt and one on the passenger side. On of them had something going on with the light switch, the light came on with the slightest pressure against the tool body. The second one didn't have this issue. I don't really care since I didn't buy these for the light, but worth a mention. I've noticed with the tight space of my small car it does like to occasionally pop off the seatbelt. I can understand making it open easily for when you actually need it though. I haven't tested the cutters because I want them to stay as sharp as they can be in case they're needed. The glass breaker should be perfectly functional, but I do prefer the spring loaded breaker on the res-q-me tool.

Feel better knowing I have this in case of emergencies
by Sydney (5 out of 5 stars)

I go through phases of being completely paranoid and worry about things that could or could not happen. Recently, it was the scenario 'What if I crashed my car in a body of water and couldn't get out?' Cue this guy. It snaps right on your seatbelt so you know it'll be there even if you flip your car. So I can unsnap it, rip my seatbelt off, and break the glass and successful escape and also save whoever's in the car with me (aka my kids). I hope that never happens but if it does, I'm prepared. Haven't had to use it yet but I feel a little better knowing I have it. Smart move to attach it to the seatbelt and that it's not in the way at all.

Well designed.

This is a great design idea for an emergency car exit tool. I like having it on the seatbelt, so it is more likely to be accessible in an emergency. Mine has not fallen off while fastening the seatbelt, as others have reported. (Note there are 4 possible orientations to attach the device.) I like having both a window breaker and belt cutter in the same device. I hope I never have to use it!

very accessible, useful, compact

very useful and compact. i think i'll add one to more of the seatbelts in my truck and use the RESQUE-ME and larger one in my big medical kits to be useful for other folk's vehicles during emergencies. these are more useful and don't need to be hung awkwardly or screwed into the door panel to be accessible. only issue i see is some folks might not be able to reach it with both hands depending, but at least it is on the inside arm side and less likely to be blocked by an accident and would just be about that person's mobility

Great idea, great tool.

I previously purchased one of those orange hammer tools, but never could find a place for it where it would both be out of the way and easily accessible in an emergency, and modern cars have no place to mount the orange beast...it still lives somewhere in my garage junk. However this tool eliminates both the storage and access issues. When fastening the seat belt, I hold both buckle and this device as I feed the belt through. If you simply try to drag the belt across yourself, it can bind and possible snap open and fall.

Will work in an emergency, if it's still attached
by Gary Collier (3 out of 5 stars)
June 9, 2013

This is a well thought out tool, with the most needed items for getting out of a vehicle: seat belt cutter, window breaker and flashlight. The cutter is well designed for rapid employment and should work nicely. The flashlight is underpowered, but what you would expect from something this size, and in a pinch will work well enough to see. The design of the tool doesn't lend itself to easily grasp and use the window breaker, though I am sure it would do. the only problem is that it doesn't stay attached to the seabelt consistently. It falls off regularly, and I have to retrieve it from the car floor, usually between the seat and the door, and reattach it. In an emergency, if it were not attached, the additional stress of trying to locate it would be a problem. It is made to be easy to release so that it can be accessed in an emergency. It might be just a little too easy to release.

Could Be Better!
by SRC (3 out of 5 stars)

Let me start this by saying that I am ordering a second one of these so they are of good enough quality to work with. I am also playing with the Res Q Me, but since I drive a push button start vehicle it was not ideal for that vehicle.

In review

Bad: Flashlight is not much at all and should not be counted on at all. Clasp is not tight enough to stay on seat-belt without you working on it.

Good: Once you work on it a bit this item is conveniently placed where you are likely to be able to reach it should you need it and is well made enough to work as intended.

Fixes: Flashlight; Not a chance I would never depend on this laughable light. Clasp to hold it on seat belt; A piece of electricians tape or black duct tape added to one side will make the clasp stay shut with more authority and as of yet has not fallen off in my month or so daily testing. If it ever does I will as a second piece of tape to the other side so the clasp is even tighter.

Convenient seatbelt shear

Firstly, I do like this product and feel it will work if needed. This device should not be purchased because it is well designed or of stellar quality, but because of it's convenience. In an emergency you would not need to see to find it as it is attached to your seatbelt.

I have not tested the ability to break a standard car window with this device but it will certainly cut through a seatbelt. In my experience it is difficult to break a window with a steel tip device like those on the end of 'specialty' tools or knives without being near the frame (where the glass won't move when struck). It seems likely this device would be difficult to hold as it is just a small plastic square with nothing beveled in to keep your fingers in place.

Convenient multi-purpose tool
by Del (4 out of 5 stars)
July 12, 2011

For those of you who worry about being trapped in your car in an accident, this will provide a little peace of mind. It's similar to other emergency egress products but it includes a small LED light along with the seatbelt cutter blade and a window breaker punch. The nice thing about it is that it is designed to attach to a standard seatbelt with a simple clamshell design. It snaps over your seatbelt and holds firmly. Keeping it attached to your seatbelt ensures it will be right at hand when you need it. I haven't had the opportunity to test the window punch, but the blade is quite sharp. The only downside I have noticed is the LED bright is not very bright. It's better than no light, but there are so many very bright small LED key chain lights out there, it seems like CRKT could have made this a little better.
