Seemed promising but fell flat
by Inquisitive M (2 out of 5 stars)

We've been having a lot of mosquito issues here in Texas since the wave of storms in May. The mosquito problem is awful right now, with many different species and a huge number of them. I've been trying out numerous types of control, from oils, sprays, incense, coils and Thermacell.

Out of all the different products, this is the one I was most excited about, especially after reading all of the positive reviews. Not only would I be able to use this in the yard, but I intended to take it with me backpacking and camping too.

First Test

The device itself is packaged nicely, and comes with the butane bottle and 3 pads. The first time I tried it, the wind was blowing moderately, as it does in this part of the world. We literally set the device right next to us, upwind so it would blow the vapor our way. I could visually tell that it was on, as there was a faint orange light, and the wispy vapor emanating from the device confirmed it.

However, it did nothing to repel the mosquitos who wanted to feast on us. They were still bold and coming right up to us. I gave up and sprayed myself with Insect Shield oil spray, and that kept them at bay. Perhaps the wind was reducing the effectiveness?

Second Test

So, I waited until we had a calm day, and headed out again with Thermacell. Once again, I placed it right next to me, upwind. Again, the device seemed to provide no protection at all from hungry mosquitos. They were still flying all around me, and trying to land. This time, I lit some citronella incense and they immediately flew away. So, now it's not looking so great for Thermacell.

Pad Longevity

I went ahead and left the pad burning to see how long it would last. The first time I used it for 1 hour, and this time, I let the clock run. Well, I was dismayed to see the pad turned white within the 3 hour total mark, which is less than the advertised 4 hour total. Overall, this made for a disappointing experience with this device, and as much as I wanted it to work, it just didn't for me. Not keeping, and can not recommend this item.

Works decent... sometimes

I play soccer in an area where the fields were built in a natural wetland. Inevitably once the sun goes down the mosquitoes come out in full force. I got this for my post-game beer decompression with my teammates. We usually get eaten alive. However, the first time I used this we were all praising it. Nobody had more than one or two bites. The second time I used it, the results were mixed. I went through an entire season and would say 50% of the time it worked amazingly and 50% of the time I couldn't notice a difference. I guess anything that reduces bites by 50% has to be considered effective. But don't get your hopes up thinking this will end all bites.

One happy customer!

Hate mosquitos? This is the device for you. I just used it on a weeklong camping trip and it kept me bite free when in use. Be aware that it takes a good 5 minutes to become effective, but I watched mosquitoes come near and then fly away when it hit the barrier. The pad smells a little like cinnamon and does work for 4 hours. I would say the butane works for a little longer than advertised, but who could complain about that? I would recommend this product.

Best Mosquito Repella
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

Greatest device ever created for repelling mosquitos. I recently had an occasion to hint near a very swampy area in early October and the mosquitos were unbelievable in number, and relentlessly harassing me as I first walked in to my spot. I pulled the thermacell out and turned it on. Ensuring that it was on via the light, I waited a few minutes and suddenly the blood suckers were gone. It was like an invisible forcefield was around me. I climbed up and got comfy. I considered I was 30 feet off the ground and the skeeters probably wouldnt bother me way up here so I turned off the thermacell. Within 5 minutes, I was once again swarmed by relentless mosquitos and I turned it back on. Within a minute or two, once again, no more skeeters. Works better than any spray that I have ever used. Its actually amazing how it creates a virtual forcefield around you and the skeeters stay away. Its awesome.

I Can't Enjoy My Deck Without It!
by CCPD (5 out of 5 stars)

Our back yard in Georgia has always been a haven for mosquitos. For years I avoided the outdoors because of them. My Uncle in Wisconsin recommended this to me so I bought one off Amazon on sale. I was skeptical until the first time I used it. I got bit a few times after I turned it on as I sat next to it and read the instructions as I tried to figure out why it didn't seem to be working. The instructions stated the device should be turned on and allowed to sit for about 15 minutes to create an area of protection. Guess what, following the instructions worked because within just a few minutes I wasn't getting bit anymore. Now, each time I decide to spend some time on the deck I put the Thermacell out for a short time before I walk out and I can enjoy my deck again. My next purchase is going to be a holster to wear it around the yard for gardening and other tasks.

Great for a limited area only

We live in south Louisiana, where mosquitoes are a nuisance! We love to sit on our patio, but by dusk the mosquitoes make it all but impossible. We've used thermacell for several years since it was recommended to us by a friend. While it doesn't protect the entire patio, it will keep the little buggers away from our seating area so we can enjoy a glass of wine for a few hours.

Love this!

This was highly recommended by a friend so I bought it. I have to say that I have only used this twice but I love it! As long as it stands the test of time I will be happy! The mosquitoes love me. Add on that this mosquito season is horrible and they have found mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus in my area. I don't like sprays unless absolutely necessary because it kills some of the good bugs too. So I brought this out on my patio and set it on the table. Not one mosquito bothered me. Not one!

Works but doesn't last as long as advertised
by Jil (3 out of 5 stars)

The pads are supposed to last 4 hours - so far I've used 6 of them and none of them lasted the full 4 hours. The butane cartridge is supposed to last 12 hours. I have found this to fall short as well. I work outdoors for two, one-hour shifts, so my timing is accurate. It's disappointing that I'm having to replace the items more frequently than advertised. I am pleased with the efficacy of the product.

Hope I'm not the only one - disappointed in the PACNW!

This product was recommended to me by a friend who gave it rave reviews. Regrettably I can not do the same. First, Initial try it seemed to work so I didn't need to return it before the deadline. However, once we truly needed it, it would not start. I tried multiple times but it would not light up. Propane was installed correctly and full. I'm disappointed I cannot get a replacement. I won't buy again. I have a different type which seems to be working just fine. Although, it doesn't seem to run more than 2 hours before I need to change the mats. But I have plenty.

This thing rocks!

So far, I haven't been bitten while using this, and I'm the one that always gets bitten. I ended up buying the big refill pack since this worked so well this summer. If I wanted to eat outside, I'd start this up a few minutes before I'm ready to eat. By the time I bring my plate out, the mosquitos have moved out of the perimeter. My husband and I can both comfortably be within the working zone, but I'm not sure exactly how far it goes. It works!
