Okay Sandbox

The idea of this is awesome. In reality, it's just ok. Like several other said, one of the hinges (where the seat folds) came off during assembly, which is not a big deal for my handman-husband to fix, but it's annoying that it would break before it's first use. It is definitely not a high-quality product . . .a little on the flimsy side.
It is okay, though & the kids are loving it. It's a good size for preschoolers. And, because we didn't have time to build our own, it was a nice time saver for now. Husband assembled it in about 1/2 hour. The folding seats are nice & the kids are able to open & close it by themselves. The 3 year old can walk on top when it's closed, but I wouldn't let my older kids do that . . .it's not strong enough & I'd worry that they'd break it. When closed, it does not keep out water, but it's secure enough to keep the cats out. We started with 7 or 8 50lb bags of sand & it was a good amount.

If you're short on time & want something quick & easy & smallish, it's a decent purchase. If you're looking for something really sturdy, to last for years & years, or something for bigger kids (over age 5ish), this is probably not what you want.

Good but needed some modifications

I want to love this. I love the design with the benches. I bought extra hinges after reading the other reviews saying the hinges were an issue. However, my issue was with pieces that were already screwed together by the company. I put the sandbox together. We played with it for 2 days. The whole bench then fell apart because the six screws that were done by the company failed. Upon inspection, it was clear that the wrong size screw had been used. I made a trip to the hardware store and picked up different screws. Hopefully, it was just on the one bench. I didn't check the other bench, although I bought extra screws just in case! The sandbox is decent size for little kids. They love playing in it and I love the fold out style with the benches! Just be prepared that you will have to replace screws and hinges. However, with the boards already being cut and it partially assembled, I will say that it was fairly easy to put together and it should be fairly easy to fix if something goes wrong.

Great sand box but replace the hardware

My four year-old son loves this sand box. The wood is somewhat softer than I expected, but so far it is certainly durable. We love the design and the fact that you can close the top so neighborhood cats and other animals don't get into the sand. The benches are nice as well. The hardware is awful, as other reviewers have noted, and several of the hinges fell off the first time I tried to close the lid. The hinges measure 1"x2", so I strongly recommend replacing those out of the gate.

I am a newly single mom and put this together myself in well under an hour with no trouble. Using a power drill or power screwdriver will make the assembly process go much more quickly.

I bought an inexpensive tarp that I throw over the lid, and weigh it down with a tonka truck, so the sand doesn't get wet and stays somewhat clean.

I used ten 50-lb. bags of play sand from Lowe's to fill it. I also laid landscape fabric under the box before assembling, but in retrospect, I'm not sure that will do much good as the sand will likely kill off any weeds and grass growing beneath.

All in all, I'm very satisfied with the purchase and wish they made a larger size. The only reason for the four-star rating was the crummy hardware.

POOR QUALITY

We purchased this for my daughters birthday in March. We had it for about 6 weeks and the screws in the hinges pulled out of the soft wood and broke the lid off. The quality of this is very poor and I am very disappointed.

Excellent sandbox kit!

I bought this sandbox kit about a month ago. After reading the reviews, I was skeptical about the quality of the hardware. Maybe the company has changed what they use, but the hinges we received are definitely sturdier than tin. They seem to be very thin stainless steel. I felt no need to replace them. The kit was easy to build; everything fit together just as it was meant to. I used hand tools to assemble everything, as the cedar is so soft that I was afraid my drill would strip out the screw holes easily. My kids, ages 8 and 6, fit in the sandbox together with plenty of room to dig and play. I appreciate that this sandbox has no bottom because my kids wanted the sand to be deep enough to dig tunnels. I leveled the ground under the sandbox, left a large foundation around the edges, and dug out the ground in the center for 2.5 to 3 feet to make the sand very deep. We have had a lot of rain over the last month and the sandbox is still in great shape. The benches are a nice feature, and the cover keeps my cats out of the sand. My kids absolutely love it!

Great real wood sandbox with fold down benches

Got this little sandbox for our 2-1/2 year old grand-daughter. My husband assembled it easily, placed it in a shady area under some trees.

We were amazed at how well it blends in. Very attractive and certainly is sturdy enough for small children. We hadn't ueeed it for a few weeks, ants and spiders had taken up residence. My husband cleaned it up and now it's covered with a 5 x 5 plastic coated dropcloth from a big box store ($5) Our grand-daughter played in it yesterday for over an hour. Would definitely buy again.

I love the design but not durable

I love the size and design of this sandbox. We bought this for my daughter a few years ago and still play with it. I was just noticing today that more boards seem to be splitting on the top. It is a yearly project for us replacing boards on the top that weather, crack and break. Not from kids standing on it even, though that is another issue if you expect your 5 year old, for example, might stand on it. It is not made very strong for that. I've replaced hinges also. Mainly, I wish the wood were sturdier. If I could turn back time, I would copy the design and build it myself using 2x8s and 2x4s. After assemble, we did apply a couple coats of paint to help protect it so it wasn't for lack of weather proofing it.

Keeps the cats out

My son loves his sandbox! And I love it too! I can sit on the little seat and watch him play and pretend I'm at the beach. The bench is definitely made for kids and gets a little uncomfortable because the upper back doesn't get support but that's not really why I bought it. We have neighborhood cats that roam around and the cover keeps them out. Wasn't terribly difficult to put together. We got a few boards that were not predrilled like the others but nothing a power drill couldn't handle.

No happy..

No happy.... the wood color is stained darker than the photo. Also the wood is full of knots and dings. The most upsetting part is how rough and splintery the wood is. This is suppose to be child's play area with benches that are rough. I'm going to sand what I can and just replace the crappy boards. For the price though I shouldn't have had to do any of this.

My son and nieces LOVE this sandbox. They love that there are seats, so they do not have to sit directly in the sand.

There is no bottom to the sandbox, we used landscape fabric to keep the weeds from growing in and allow water to drain out. Even after heavy rains, it drains quickly.

We used 10 50lb bags of sand to fill it, and added cinnamon to keep the bugs out.
