Stop buying this Sport-Brella. They've ruined a 5-star product.
by Clint Potts (1 out of 5 stars)

I'm a soccer dad. Have been for 13 years. I also live in Arizona. I've seen and used every manner of sun protection available. About 10 years ago, I bought my first Sport-Brella. I was impressed with its durability and design and over the years, I've owned 5 of them in the 6 and 9 foot sizes. My two 6-footers are still functioning, but my 9 finally stripped its tightening knob and became useless. It was 7 years old. I hopped on Amazon and purchased another on the spot.

Over the years, I've recommended this product to many friends, and as I saw them start using them, I began noticing that theirs were different than mine. The mechanical parts appeared to get cheaper and less-durable year by year. And, year by year, I kept using mine. I could set them up in high winds by staking out guy lines and we'd enjoy 3-4 games every weekend in peaceful trust in our amazing Sport-Brellas.

When my new one arrived, I pulled it from its bag, noticing that the bag seemed thinner than my old one. I opened it and noticed that the knob to tighten the center post had been replaced with a plastic folding latch. The bell at the top was loose and rolled down the umbrella and hit the ground at my feet. I closed it and screwed the bell back on, but at the point of "tight" it stripped through and I had to tighten it again. This time I stopped just shy of tight and it stayed. I opened it again. I set it in my stand and tried to snap the shade flaps up to the retaining clip I've used for 10 years. Guess what. They cheaped out and removed the clip! Now, I have to roll the flap until I can use crappy tie straps to secure it at the bottom of the umbrella. I secured my guy lines and staked them into position. It worked the rest of the game and I put it back into the cheap bag and went home.

The next day was another game and it was a windy day, but not nearly as windy as my experience assured me I could use a Sport-Brella. Please note that I have done this hundreds of times. I opened it, turning the umbrella into the wind to prevent becoming Mary Poppins. It opened. Then, the bell fell off again. I turned to pick it up and the wind caught the umbrella, whipping it open and turning it inside out. In ten years, I've NEVER turned a Sport-Brella inside out! Well, that was the end of my brand-new Sport-Brella. Five of the ribs ripped from the cap, leaving holes in the umbrella. It is done.

Last weekend, I grabbed the 8-year old version and watched another game.

Until you see another buyer write a review detailing how they have started using quality components again, quit buying this piece of crap. I won't be recommending them to friends anymore. I won't be recommending them to you either.

Stay Clear of this product.

Do not buy this product. It is different from 2-3 years ago. I couldn't even use this product one time. The top popped off; the stakes broke; the main pole bent and wouldn't fit back into the base (the pointed end stuck out about 6-8 inches and couldn't fit into the bag anymore. When using it as an umbrella, the extended part of the umbrella flapped in the wind; there was no clips to prevent it. Lastly, low-moderate wind blew the umbrella inside-out. After an hour fighting with it, we had to take it down and use another families umbrella/tent. This new version of the Sport-Brella is an absolute train wreck. Completely cheaped out compared to the original version a couple years ago. I'm returning this product immediately.

Nice color and easy to used but looks like if it was been made with home recycled materials......

Perfect size, nice colorand super easy to use but sadly after been used 5 times a piece of wire got loose and the umbrella felt apart, turns out that that little piece of wire(poor quality material) holds the whole umbrella together, with a little bit of engineering they should be aware that a main component that is gonna be exposed to high resistance has to be more capable to keep the structure together, it looks like a homemade part, should be more like a bracket or a circlip.

Either the quality has gone way down or we got a lemon

Bought one of these in summer 2015 and loved it so much for beach trips with our infant son that we bought another this past summer.

It survived just 1 windless trip to the beach. The second trip was on a moderately windy day and our Sport-Brella was utterly destroyed. To the point of being laughable. Other similar sun and wind shields in our vicinity on the same strip of beach survived the day just fine because it really wasn't that windy.

I guess it's back to the drawing board in our search for a good durable product we can use at the beach with our boy!

A once great product is now a cheap imitation
by Real paying customer (2 out of 5 stars)

I owned a sportbrella for about 8 years and it was awesome but the day came to retire and replace it. Of course I would get the same umbrella again! Big mistake. I don't understand, this umbrella was perfect and now they seemed to be manufactured with a " whats the cheapest & flimsiest option. What am I talking about. 1) the material is now thin and weak. 2) The locking mechanism for the pole extender is now cheap plastic that doesn't hold up to pressure. 3) the side flaps no longer clip up and now need to be rolled up with a single velcro strap to poorly hold it in place.

I can only assume sportbrella was bought out by a company that then had to cut costs inorder to wring out more proffit from a once great product. Very disappointed.

Epic Umbrella Fail
by Denise Ryan (1 out of 5 stars)

I bought this umbrella as I have friends who use the same brand but smaller size. I was impressed with it. My photo says it all. It blew over and completely inside out after one hour on the beach. The metal supports twisted and bent so badly that we could not right it and close the umbrella even after removing the material in an attempt to recover it. Left it at the side of a dumpster at the beach because it was too mangled to get back into the car or my friends SUV. The wind flaps were down to allow good flow but it did not help. Wind speeds were 16 mph with gusts to 20 mph. Going to buy something much sturdier next time. This was a grand $55 disappointment. I understand not all umbrellas can take winds like that but it didn't expect it to be so fragile that I couldn't turn it inside out and fix it.

love my og sport-brella.....hate this downgraded version

my old og sport-brella has a more stout pole with a pointed metal end with is great for stabbing into the ground. this one has a lighter guage pole with a cheap plastic end that is not sharp. i cant get it into my lawn by hand and i'm scared to hit it in with a hammer cause of the cheap plastic end and lighter guage metal

also the old one had a set screw with a knob on it with did well to lock the telescoping inner pole to the outer pole without any slip

this new one has a cheap plastic cam lever and i can make the pole slip with only slight pressure

i hate when companies take something that was good and go backward making it not so good

i would return it but my dog already ate the box

love my og sport-brella.....hate this downgraded version

Poor quality and even worse customer service
by Jeff L. (1 out of 5 stars)

Bought this item last September, used it approximately 5 times on weekends for my daughter's soccer games. After the season put the umbrella back in its case and put away until yesterday. Guess 6th time was the charm because when we tried to open the umbrella one of the spokes just broke. Looked at the end of the spoke and it is literally tin foil so small wonder. Contacted Amazon and was told I would have to contact the manufacturer, which seems to be the case these days with Amazon. When I bought this item it had great reviews, now I see a number of reviews from people describing the same issue. Furthermore, if I had bought this item from Target, Walmart, REI, Dicks or any other retailer that actually cares about their customers I could have returned this item without wasting my time. I used to feel pretty confident that the items I bought on Amazon would be good quality, and if that was not the case; I could rely on Amazon customer service to fix the issue. Now I can buy better quality, for the same or less and if I need to return it, not have to deal with a call center in Calcutta that could care less. I Have had issues with 70% of the purchases over the past year that I've made with Amazon and at this point, I feel the same towards Amazon that they clearly feel towards me, just not worth it so adios Amazon. I suggest you contact Best Buy about how that 30 day return policy is working out for them.

Light wind destroyed our sport-brella after only one use
by Happy Mom (1 out of 5 stars)
July 25, 2017

We bought this to keep our baby out of the sun when we visit the Oregon coast. The second day of our trip we tried to set it up and the wind broke the metal frame that supports the sport-brella as we were opening it. It was not strong wind- about 10mph. Our sun shelter was destroyed. It went in the trash. I read other reviews warning of this, but thought it must have been really windy or those people set it up wrong. Worst amazon purchase I ever made. Total waste of money. Looking back I wish I had contacted Amazon for a replacement or refund, but we had already recycled the box so returning this huge thing didn't happen.

I like these, BUT....
by Mike M (3 out of 5 stars)

I own (still have and use) an older 9ft and 10ft Sport-Brella. I use these extensively at my kid's sporting events and our family trips to the beach. I purchased this new one to use with the other two at our annual week long vacation at the beach (we needed more shade on the beach). Where as the basic design is still solid (when compared to my old versions) there are some design "improvements" that I am not to keen on:
1) Securing the two flaps that are utilized when umbrella is deployed lying on its side: I deploy the umbrella exclusively in the vertical position (like an umbrella on your deck or at thee tables at your pool) so these flaps are always in their "stored" position. My old Sportbrellas have hooks up on the outside top plenum that secure the flaps on top of the canopy and out of the way. The new sprotsbrella does not have these hooks and requires you to rollup and secure the flaps with a single (tad bit too small) Velco strap on the edge of the canopy. With only one strap in the middle, the ends of the flaps become somewhat unrolled, catch the beach breeze, hinder people's movement, and disturb people lines of sight from under the unbrella. I found I need to carry 4 or 5 of the larger size Binder clips to properly secure the flap to the edge of the Sportbrella. With the old Sporsbrella (with hooks) this never happened (and the flaps would not catch the breeze if you aligned the flaps with the direction of the breeze/wind). Keeping the flaps in the rolled up (stored) position also hindered storing the sportsbrella back into its cloth storage bar/carrier. I had to unroll the flaps every time I took the sportsbrella down. This is the biggest issue I had with this new Sportsbrella design.
2) The new latch for securing the rod extension is now a flip-down plastic compression latch instead of a plastic knob metal threaded set screw. I found the plastic compression latch would allow the rod extension to side back into the unbrella handle when I was agressively pushing the Sportsbrella into the sand during setup or unbrella adjustment. I will see how this latch holds up over time and use. I see this feature as the weakest link in the Sprotbrella design. I found that the old screw-tighten set screw worked way better for my applications.
3) Pointed extension rod (the part you extend from the handle and push into the ground to hold the sportsbrella in either the vertical or lying down deployments): Old Sportsbrellas have an all metal rod that you can lightly hammer into the hard ground (grass field, etc). The new Sportbrella has a metal rod with plastic ends (one end cap pointed, the other flat). I would not feel comfortable pounding the rod into the ground as I do with the all metal rods of the older Sportsbrellas... Having only use the new Sprotsbrella at the beach, this was not tested....

Conclusion: Over-all, I am satisfied the the newer Sportsbrella design (and very satisfied with the older versions I purchased several years ago). Except for the new compression latch, I see no reason why this newer Sportsbrella will not last as long as the older one. But, I will probably only use the new one if I need three umbrellas useing the other two older one first. I understand the life cycle of products and therefore understand the design "improvement" (really they are "cost" improvement). But if given an option, I would rather have had paid a few more bucks and purchased the older version of the 10ft Sportsbrella XL.
