Our dog loves it. It took 3 different times using it before she got it (she is not the brightest dog, but loves water). Now she gets so excited every time we pull it out. We even pulled it out once when she was constipated and wasn't drinking water, it saved us a vet trip. Our little dog is not strong enough to make it work so our big one presses on it for her.

so our hose obsessed GSD LOVE LOVE LOVES THIS THING!! we put it on a big slab of stone so she wouldnt trash the grass and she will play with it for hours! the connectors are brass and there is a screw that will control how much water comes out . she figured it out in 2 minutes .. i did squirt myself in the face several times while demonstrating it before she figured it out. its AWESOME and well made .. use plumbers teflon tape when screwing together the connections and get a pop connector so you can remove it easily from your hose and not destroy the threads with constant unscrewing ..

I really want to give this five stars because my dogs LOOOOVE it. However, two things: the image in the description shows the water coming up like a little fountain, but mine shoots several feet in the air. In this case, that's a good thing, but if you have a little dog, probably not. Second, and most importantly, the resistance is controlled by a metal spring that just sort of sits in grooves below the pedal. It's fallen out basically every single time we've used this, leaving a mud puddle in the yard and really frustrated dogs who don't have thumbs of their own to fix it. If I can figure out how to keep that thing in there, this would be 5 stars.

I bought this because two of my 3 dogs love to play with the hose. I thought this would be a nice substitute, and a way for them to have a bit of fun with the water. This entire fountain is made of metal and seems to be very sturdy, and should last a long time. It took my dog less then 1 day to figure out how to use it. We use the touch command, so we just kept showing her what to do and telling her to touch it. Let me go through the pros and cons.

Pros: Made of metal, very sturdy, easy to set up

Cons: The water adjustment does not work. The coating on top of the paw did peel a bit.

Let's talk about more about the water adjustment. So there are no real directions that come with this, but under the panel there is a screw that can be used to adjust the water, but it does not work, at all. What we did was purchase a 2 way connector for our faucet, and then when just barely turn the water on. This creates enough pressure to make a fountain. Otherwise the water will spray 3 feet up and just soak your dog and probably scare them as well. I advise testing how fast and high the water goes before introducing your dog.

In conclusion, I do really like the product and if your dog likes water, playing with a hose or a sprinkler, they will probably like this as well.

First lets start with construction:

The fountain is made of sturdy metal, not some cheap plastic toy. the hose attachment works well and feels like copper. I will say that the hose can come loose from the base of the fountain if pulled on, but it is not hard to put back. Perhaps get a clamp to promise it sticks. Precision Brand M4P Micro Seal, Miniature Partial Stainless Worm Gear Hose Clamp, 7/32" - 5/8" (Pack of 10)

Function and Training:

This product works great if you can train your dog to step on it. I have a 2 year old Rot-mix and it took about a week to get her comfortable with this fountain. First off, train your dog when they are thirsty. Sounds like common sense, but honestly the more they want water the more agreeable they are to step on this metal square. I recommend treat luring to get the dog to 'walk' over the fountain and then reward when they accidentally trigger it. Also note that they will be sprayed in the face a few times when they first step on it. I suggest a valve later in this review that can be used to lower the pressure for in the beginning.

Reward:

I can now leave my two dogs in the backyard for a entire afternoon without worrying about them getting thirsty, and without leaving open water bowls to get dirty or breed insects in. If you live in a area like me, spring is the worst time because mosquitoes breed in still water. Well now I dont have to worry about my dog bowls being the problem.

Thoughts for better function:

I recommend getting a control valve Gilmour Brass Garden Hose Connector With Shut-Off Valve 03V to adjust water flow. That way you can leave the water pressure up to full if you are splitting the line lets say to a sprinkler system, but you don't want a 6 foot stream from this fountain when stepped on. Also, I recommend placing this fountain over gravel or mulch for proper drainage for excess water.

Overall:

Great product. Well built. Easy to use. Love it.

I have 4 Labrador Retrievers. I assumed since this product appeared to be built durably that I wouldn't have any issues. Unfortunately this was not the case. Assembly was easy and with no leaks from the valve or hose. The lever held up fine from repeated use but the valve body failed after 33 days. putting me outside the window for Amazon return policy. Now the valve is stuck and its not working. I am unable to find the manufacturer online to try and get this warrantied. I would steer clear of this product and find another fountain that has a better quality, unless you have $60 you don't need anymore.

Best water toy for dogs EVER!

I would have given this product a 10 star rating for how much my dogs love it and I would have given it a 4 star rating because my dog chewed through the hose and broke it, after I turned the water off before she was ready to stop playing and it's not something I could find at Home Depot to replace, but I give it 5 stars because even a year later, the seller sent me a new hose, just like that! No questions asked, no charge, no fuss, no muss. This is SO much fun for dogs to play with and to drink from.... and believe me....there was NO learning curve on how to make it work.

Good but needs my improvements to be great

Dog loves but wish there was a better alternative. First off, every summer I buy one of these for my German Shepard who loves water so I'm experienced but annoyed by these. For being kind of costly, they need improvement. First off, they rust and fast. Within a week, I can see rust bubbles under the paint. In the past, I've tried to scrape it off and repaint but it never holds up. How much would aluminum or SS be? Maybe a heavy duty plastic?

Second, and probably worst, is the cheap white hose that comes attached is so weak that within 4 weeks it bursts and it's a strange proprietary size I can't buy a normal replacement. I usually end up using hose clamps and replacement hose to make it work but not good solution.
3rd is a feature which would add cost but increase safety. This unit needs an anti-scald valve. In PHX, the water in the hose gets maybe 140 + degrees in minutes and can easily hurt your poor dog. The valve runs$10 retail and could divert the water to the ground until the temp cools down. In quantity, I'm sure you can get it for much less and increase the cost of this unit. I would add my own but your strange size of hose connection makes it impossible to add.

Finally, in an ideal world, it could have a setting to allow water to flow for a few seconds every time the dog hits the paddle. My dog likes to snap at the water while in flight so she slaps the paddle over and over again. If one press would let the water stay on a few seconds I think she'd love it more.

Don't know if the manufacturer in China will ever read this or care one bit but maybe a competitor will and design the perfect water paddle!

Love it!!! After watching the reviews on it I was sold. The only reason I give it 4 stars is the Paw emblem is coming off after less than 10 minutes of use! And the spring popped off! No big deal on both just some feed back!!

Great permanent resource for water for your dog!

Awesome convenience. Easy for dog to learn how to use. Even our cats have learned how to use it their entire body weight this makes a little trouble which is perfect for a cat to drink out of. Only problem is they will stick in the on position and create a fountain and a flood. Unfortunately when that happens in the middle of the night I get up to a swamp. I would like to see a better mechanism for the water control, then this thing would be perfect. Would also like to see it a little easier to control the water flow I have two of these, on one I can adjust the water flow easily on the other one I can't adjust it at all. Would also like to see a chew proof protector around the hose, like a heavy duty spring or something.
