Product Description

Our Reflective Cord Pack makes campsites and job sites safer for everyone. When you're out in the elements at night there are enough hazards to navigate without worrying about losing sight of what you've got tied down. Nite Ize Reflective Cord comes in a 50' (15.24 meters) length of 2.44mm cord and weighs a mere 2.43 oz. It is perfect for things like tent guy lines, hanging bear bags, boating, tying up tarps or shelters, and then being able to see where it is when you're done. Made of sturdy nylon with a special reflective strip woven into it that reflect brightly when light is shined onto it, the Nite Ize Reflective Cord increases safety for you and the people around you on the trail, campsite, water, and highway. After all, the only thing more important than "knowing the ropes" is being able to find them.

Features

  • REFLECTIVE, DURABLE UTILITY CORD - A special reflective strip woven into this nylon cord makes it highly visible in your flashlight beam so you won't trip over it at night
  • GREAT FOR GUYING OUT TENTS OR TYING UP TARPS - With 50 FT of cord to work with, you'll have plenty for setting up your tent, tarp, or shelter, and because it's highly reflective you won't get tangled up in it walking around camp at night

A photo to reflect on
by Tumblemark (4 out of 5 stars)
July 6, 2016

Since there is so much concern about reflectivity I thought I'd set up a photo and show six options. This is a flash photo taken at night.

The far left sample is Blue Water 3.5 mm reflective nylon cord. It is smooth and soft, as you would expect Kernmantle cordage to be; the reflective threads are very bright, but there aren't a lot of them. Its breaking strength is 500 lbf. (2.2 kN).

Next is 2.5 mm Nite Ize. This cord has more reflective threads and they kinda stick out on the surface. It reflects the most light of all the cords, but its dark green color is hard to see in daylight. It feels kinda stiff and lumpy in the hand rather than flexy.

Next is the 2.0 mm (as I measured it) "fluorescent" Reflective Guyline. It has fewer reflective threads and less reflected light, but its non-reflective fibers are bright yellow-green, so it stands out well when illuminated. There's no identification of the material, but assuming it's nylon, the tensile strength would be about 175 lbf. (0.7 kN). And assuming it's nylon it may stretch a when wet.

Then we have 1.5 mm Kelty TripTease. Its gold color stands out and its reflective fibers work well. TripTease is reputed to have a breaking strength of 188 lb, due to its Dyneema core. It is what I use most of the time for tent lines and zipper pulls, and the Dyneema core seems to minimize stretch when wet. It works well with Lineloc tensioners.

Next is non-reflective yellow Dyneema cord. It is oval, but about 2 mm on average. Kite line like this has a tensile strength of about 4 kN (900 lbf), so breaking won't be an issue, nor will stretch when wet. The problem is that it doesn't hold knots well, but it works well enough with the Lineloc connectors.

But if you really want a SUPER reflective line, your best bet would be to just clip on a bicycle spoke reflector. You can get them on Amazon for about .30 each and they fit the ~2 mm cords readily; they can be slid up and down but they stay in place. They only weigh 1 gram. Even half of the 2" length would be very bright by headlamp.

So I'd say that the hot ticket would be a Spectra/Dyneema cored line with yellow polyester sheath (to make knots hold better). You can get it here on Amazon by looking for Spectra Survival Cord; it costs about the same <$15 for 50' as similar cordage. At about 2 mm, it breaks at 325 lb. Clip on a few bicycle spoke reflectors and you're good to go.

There are other options, if you want to look around. New England Ropes makes Spiderline Dyneema core cords with polyester sheath; the 1.8 mm breaks at 350 lb. You can find a wide variety of spiffy cords and LineLoc and Micro LineLoc connectors (and lots more) at zpacks; that's where I'd start looking.

Works great and can be seen easily in the dark.

Lights up brightly, even with a small headlamp. I've attached a photo of the line in the dark, lit with my Petzl Tikkina 2 headlamp, which has 23 lumens at the brightest setting. See the photo I took from my last backpacking trip.

Too stretchy for proper tent lines in inclement weather.
by Randy Marsh (3 out of 5 stars)

As another reviewer mentioned, it stretches, excessively, (stretches an additional 1.5 inches for every foot of cord), making it a poor choice for reliably taut tent/rainfly guylines and bad news for a windy night in the rain, but it is plenty visible with a headlamp. It seems strong enough to hang a bear bag, use as a clothes line, or tie out a tarp, maybe a 30lb or so break strength (nothing regarding weight capacity is printed on the packaging) but there are much less stretchy and probably stronger reflective cords out there, although they do cost significantly more for the same amount. I guess I was expecting something more like paracord, this stuff is almost like wannabe bungee cord. I might just get some good old 550 cord and tie loops of this stuff to it. It might be better suited for wrapping around a bike frame or a backpack or something, for improved evening roadside visibility, because it certainly lacks in the finer qualities of a good utility cord.

The brightest cord I know of
by Andrew,Top Contributor: Camping (5 out of 5 stars)

Very much brighter than any other reflective paracord I've seen or used. The reflective strand in this cord is larger and appears in the weave about twice as often compared to other reflective cordage. In the dark with a flashlight pointed at it, this cord just lights up and you see a string of light. Other cords look like a thin dotted line. I compared directly to some reflective Titan Survival Cord, and the reflective threads are twice as broad and appear twice as often in the weave.

If you want cord that pops in the dark, this is it.

That being said, it is not weight rated and the package says not to use it where failure would result in damage or injury. So this cord has limited use-primarily as tent guylines. Which is fine, and a really good place to use reflective cord so people don't trip over it in the dark.

Superb item for the dark.

Very impressed with the reflective cord. Heavy duty cord that reflects with light from your flashlight. I am in the process of replacing all my tent and tarp cords with this great cord. As you can see in the picture below, even at about 50 feet away the reflective cord just pops out of the dark. No more tripping at night when nature calls. Will always have a spool in my pack.

Disappointing
by Bryan K. Gravely (2 out of 5 stars)

I'm a huge fan of Nite Ize products so I've come to expect more from them than they delivered with this product. The reflective strand that is braided into the cord is so much thicker than the rest of the strands that it sticks out making the line knobby and uneven. It makes removing knots difficult. Without looking at the line, just feeling it in the hand, you'd swear the reflective line wasn't woven in, but was just little specs glued on.

Apart from that, it technically does do the job. It's reflective and holds well, just doesn't seem quite up to the usual quality of Nite Ize products.

Works Great For My Usage

Put up a new canopy like gazebo in my backyard for this summer and needed to tie it down. Before this I just used my pop up canopy which I tied down with the included cords but my buddies and I would trip over them during late night BBQs.

This reflective nylon cord is working perfectly so far for night visibility as it reflects from either the spot light I have out back or from the camp lights near the gazebo.

Don't know how many pounds it can handle but we had some 40mph winds recently here in NY and it held the gazebo in place.

No issue with quality and reflects perfectly for high visibility as long as there is a light source nearby. If it glowed in the dark also, I would give it 6 stars.

Nice line for campers

It IS a bit "bumpy", but not so much as to interfere with knots and pulling over branches or through grommets and attaching with tighteners (works well with the small figure 9 from Nite Ize: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F6ULS4).

Coils nicely; we use it for many things when "glamping" in our motorhome.

Customer service is great! I had a minor issue with one package I opened 3 years after purchase and Brian at NiteIze answered my email with a complete solution in less than 3 hours!

Get reflective cord, save some band-aids
by Georgia on my mind. (5 out of 5 stars)

I used this line to replace a couple of tie-backs on my tent. The first time camping at a state park out west proved their worth. Returning to the tent in the dark with only a half dead flashlight, I quickly spotted the two reflective lines I replaced from 15 ft away. I've tripped over lines in the dark a few times in my life when not paying enough attention. After seeing these lines in the dark, I'm replacing all my tent lines with this reflective cord and will do so with my rain-fly also. Just a great safety feature for next to nothing when you got to go wandering around outside your tent at night. Finding the park restroom is easy, finding the tent in pitch black forest night ....not so much. believe me, you'll be glad you got reflective material guiding the way around these "trip wires" that hold your tent/rain-fly. Also helps eliminate the curdling screams from inside the tent after your mate who woke up terrified when half the tent collapsed after you tripped onto it from the unseen old non-reflective guy-line....yea, I know! ......don't ask about the pistol.

Very skinny and rough. Not durable
by Krish (2 out of 5 stars)

We used this over the weekend to tie down tent. As other buyers said I did not find this reflective in the night with camp lights kids tripped over and fell several times. I had to tie down camp lights on the rope to make sure to walk around the rope. I felt I was not able to tie a tight knot with this rope. I definitely won't use this next time for my camping as it's too skinny to tie down a camp in Oklahoma wind.
