Clever, functional, and SWITCH works mechanically

The SWITCH S&P is plastic, apparently unlike the other S&Ps in the Fred & Friends lineup. I couldn't tell (from the picture, or description, or from any of the reviews) whether this S&P rocker switch actually "worked" with a rocker-type movement, or not. Well, YES, it does operate like a rocker switch: Press the "S" side for salt, Press the "P" side for pepper. There is plenty of space to hold an adequate amount of salt and pepper. Unless you routinely put 2 or 3 teaspoons of salt/pepper on your food at one sitting, this is perfectly good for day-to-day use on the dinner table or breakfast table. (I have no idea why some other reviewers have complained about its size or storage ability. It is a perfectly "normal-sized" S&P, quite usable.)

Two weird things about it, though:
1) No instructions or guidance on HOW TO OPEN IT for filling. Normally, this is obvious in a shaker. But, the SWITCH S&P has several seams, all very tight, that could be places for opening it up. Some are on the top, some are on the bottom. It is not obvious, so I started prying a bit on the bottom seams with a penknife. It turns out that there are two SLIDING panels on the bottom. You slide each one to the side to reveal the two compartments. It would have been nice to have an arrow imprinted on each of the "secret" compartment doors to indicate how to open. I imagine that some people have broken the unit when trying to open it.
2) The Salt side has only 1 hole! And the pepper side has 3 holes! This is opposite the normal American standard, where the salt typically has more holes than the pepper. (Or, it may have the same # of holes.) This switch conforms to the European standard. ( I collect S&Ps, and I learned of this reversal in standards when I purchased a set from England, and the seller was referring to the one with one hole as the Salt, and the one with 3 holes as the Pepper. I questioned this, and in our discussions we each learned that we have opposite standards for the salt holes and for the pepper holes.) I think the Japanese also use the European standard. Most S&Ps are not labeled with "S" or "P", so they can be used either way. But a few do specify which is the salt, and which is the pepper -- as in the case of this SWITCH S&P.

So, I like this S&P both as a collectible and as a working unit. I don't like the fact that no guidance is given on how to open the compartments.

Cute and convenient

I bought this salt/pepper shaker on accident, and it turns out I really like it. It has two small compartments that open on the bottom for the salt/pepper, and you flip the switch according to which one you want to dispense. You can also click the switch to the middle to turn them both "off". I do notice that the switch is a little hard to click to salt if the compartment is extremely full. Also, they're not completely tight, so if one is turned "off" you still get a few flakes if you shake it hard. I think it's nice for cooking because you just flip it over for your seasoning of choice.

Super cute, but there's only one pinhole for the salt and pepper to come out. I took them to the car lot where I work. The staff went crazy for them, until it came time to season their lunch and no one could get the salt and pepper to come out at a reasonable pace. We ended up punching the hole bigger so we can actually get the seasoning out.

The design is fantastic, but the holes at the top need to be bigger, more than one hole would also help. I had to drill them out to allow standard salt & medium ground pepper to sprinkle. Without drilling out the holes, nothing would exit.

Very cute. The packaging is super clever and the look is just as pictured. I have to give up one star for the rather flimsy plugs at the bottom (they work, but seem thin), and the tiny holes in the tops (each has just one hole in the center). If you want a little salt or pepper, they will be fine. We wanted to be able to use them also to do some seasoning as we cook, but not enough will come out. Maybe that is more a bad expectation on our part, but we think even decorative shakers should be a bit more generous.

It looks cool with good concept of batteries but it made out of cheap plastic quality. You will be too embarrass to display them in your kitchen for any guest to see.

This is a good way to keep things in one place. However my gripe is that this thing tends to get clogged up a lot. It has a nice design though. I bought this back when I just needed a shaker, now that I'm an experience "salt shaker man" this is definitely going to get replaced with something better and more classy.

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for a friend who collects salt and pepper shaker sets and he loved it! Not the best quality if that's what you're looking for, but it was a great gift for the price and novelty of the item.

My mom really likes this. The switch salt and pepper is really great, because both sides can be closed. No spilling, so it's really good for picnic or BBQ.
