Not much volume, fits Galaxy S3 Barely, but a BT receiver for it for better performance
by Amazon Customer (3 out of 5 stars)
July 18, 2014

This thing works fairly well but it has a few issues. I'm using it with a Galaxy S3, and it barely fits in the waterproof area - I have to take the phone out of it's case to fit in. if you've got a Galaxy Note or something similar forget it - it wont work.

The sound is OK, but there is very little base, and it's barely load enough to use outside. It's ok for personal use sitting next to it, or on a small boat, but it's not the kind of volume that can be heard above any sort of constant background noise.

The speakers in the housing are very small - maybe 2" - what's seen on the outside of the base are just plastic covers.

I'm using mine with a Bluetooth receiver inside instead of the phone - $20 around amazon. Much less hassle if you don't need the waterproof feature.

The external controls only for work pause/play on the S3. Next and back don't work with Pandora. Maybe with a player they might work.

There's not much else around like this device, and it's super rugged and the batteries last a while. It's nice, but don't expect load volume or it to fit your device.

This Ain't High Fidelity
by Bob A. (3 out of 5 stars)
September 5, 2015

This thing is 2 tinny 3" speakers with a battery-powered internal 5 watt amp and a 3.5 mm headphone plug to plug into your music maker. That's it. Construction seems fine. Probably waterproof.

Includes a wall cord that won't charge the 8 AA batteries. Good news is the transformer is 12v DC so you could easily find a cigarette lighter adapter. Has a plug for headphone out on the front of the box -- which is sorta absurd if you think about it.

Perfect for my Apple Classic iPod. My LG G3 smart phone won't fit with its protective case. The top of the box has controls for volume that work with both devices. The track selection buttons only works on the G3. When you hit the 'Off' button, you also have to open the central case and turn your device off, too. Annoyingly bright green LED light near right speaker aiming right at you but at least you'll know if the power is on.

Its about as loud as a transistor radio from back in the day. Sound quality? They are 3" speakers! It ain't going to be rattling any windows.

BoomBox? Er, ah, maybe BreezeBox. You'll have to decide if its worth a Franklin to you. It would have been a big plus if it included a USB mini plug to charge the L3 while its playing music. Alas, not.

I'm keeping it as it is what I was looking for -- play some tunes (quietly) around the campsite.

Looks nice, sounds bad and is not made for the iPhone6
by Casi Dougal (1 out of 5 stars)
March 17, 2015

While this stereo looked cool the sound quality left much to be desired. The sound gets drowned out with any ambient noise and it has virtually no bass. I think all the cost for this product went into the exterior design and not much on producing good sound.

I would of probably lived with the poor sound if it weren't for the fact that my iPhone 6 would not fit properly into it (I have the small iPhone 6). Like most iPhone users I have a thin case on my phone which didn't help but it's clear that the product is not designed to accommodate the iPhone6. I could force the phone to fit in the compartment but even then the straps in the stereo compartment would push on the iphone so hard it would activate Siri. I checked the mfg's website before purchasing and they had a whole page devoted to saying how all their products were compatible with the iPhone 6. Thanks to Amazon's great return policy I'm not out though.

I ended up buying a bluetooth waterproof speaker from the same company, the "EcoPebble" which I love especially since I picked it up for only $27 from Costco. Even though it's about a 1/10th the size it seems I can get more volume from it and I don't have to worry about connecting my iPhone.

It was nice to have my phone with me
by Drew G. (4 out of 5 stars)
August 21, 2015

I bought this stereo about a year ago. It's maiden voyage was a small rafting trip down a river with a bunch of friends. It worked really well for that. It was nice to have my phone with me, in a waterproof compartment, and even had room for about two large car key/fobs. My friends were impressed with the fact that this was waterproof. I threw it in the river and it kept playing music, all while everyone around had a look of udder shock on their faces. The sound quality is good. It doesn't suck, like most small bluetooth speakers, but it doesn't have that big sound like larger name brand stereos do. And the volume it puts out is pretty good as well. I can fill my two car garage with a good amount of sound with this. I also used it on a few camping trips. It played music for about 2 days straight with high quality batteries in it. We were all surprised at how long it lasted.

Another reviewer on amazon said that they would like to see a slightly larger version of this powered by D cell batteries (instead of the 8 AA batteries this one takes) and I would have to agree 100% with that. Also have some slightly larger speakers, maybe a pair of tweeters, and have it put out some more sub-bass. I would buy this in a heart beat.

After that trip, I used it in my garage as a small stereo. It works pretty well for that, but if you try to turn it all the way up, the sound will start to distort.

I noticed about 8 months after the purchase, that the stereo would start to distort at any volume after about 30-50 mins of playing time. Then finally one day the left speaker completely quit on me. It was about 2 weeks shy of having it for a full year. I looked on ECOXGEAR's website and found that they just increased the product's warrantee to three full years on most of their products. I printed and filled out their return policy (you don't even have to email them) then shipped it away, and about 3 weeks later I had a brand new replacement at my door. I have yet to operate this one. Hopefully I won't have the same problem again and have to get them replaced every year.

All in all, I think this is a good unit. I'm hoping that my defect was just a fluke and others won't have the same problem I did. But it was nice to have a replacement shipped to my door with no hassle at all. I would recommend this to others and I would LOVE to see a larger unit with more frequency response (sub bass) and larger batteries or even an internal battery.

Very Functional but Lacking Volume for Outdoors
by John H. (3 out of 5 stars)
July 15, 2012

I consider myself somewhat of an "expert" on portable Ipod boomboxes as I buy a new one very year. I'm always looking for that perfect combination of functionality and performance, which I haven't found yet.

PROS

It really is lightweight, durable and waterproof

Controls are smart and functional

It runs on "C" batteries as opposed to being rechargeable - if you're camping you can bring extra batteries

CONS

The problem withis unit is that it just doesn't have enough clean volume for a lot of outdoor environments. I used it on a fairly noisy beach (waves crashing, kids playing, other music, etc.) and I had it at about 90% volume (any more and the distortion is noticeable). I needed to have it about 3-4 feet away to clearly hear the music.

Also the Ipod geta a little hot when used in the sun.

BOTTOM LINE

A great device unless you need some volume. That's why I gave it 3 stars. If I was the manufacturer I would design an alternate model with about 150% of the size and sound volume that runs on "D" batteries.

plusses and minuses
by Lorraine (3 out of 5 stars)
May 15, 2013

This device is small and light, and has a nice carrying strap. It WILL fit an iPhone 5. I guess it's designed to go to the beach. It has water-resisting features, but the instructions clearly say: "Although the ECO TERRA is waterproof, the unit is NOT designed for use under water. Do NOT intentionally submerge the unit underwater." Ok maybe not the beach, or make sure you have an umbrella because it says not to keep it in heat, but I guess all electronics mention that. It has an audio-in jack. It does not recharge batteries, but you can put any kind of C batteries (needs 4) into it. It comes with the AC adapter you need which is nice. You can put your device INTO the front of this, and not worry about it falling if you walk, which is why I bought it. But, I will be giving it away for these reasons.
* The sound is not so great. Not loud enough, not enough bass, etc. For its weight/price though I guess it's as good as one can expect.
* It does not charge your iPod. It plays sound from your music device's earphone jack which is nice if you have a weird adapter to the device (like the new iPhone 5s), but that's why it's not charging the device. It has a switch for iPhone type jacks or Samsung type jacks, I have no idea why that's necessary but it will probably help someone.

Those are my deal-breakers, but there are a few other things I wish were different. For example:
* In the effort to make this device water-resistant, they have this screw-down cover over the hole for the electric plug, so when you have it plugged in this big cap just kind of sits there poking out. I had planned to always use this just plugged in except for visiting other people, so this big plug is a pain.
* The wire that goes into your music device needs to bend over on itself which bugs me and makes me nervous that it's going to wear out from being bent a lot.
* Because it gets info from your music device through the headphone jack, it can't perform a lot of selection action with the device, and says only iPods will be likely to act with the limited functions available. (Still better than nothing.)
* The instructions kind of suck. For example there are these teeny weeny pads with a little stick on a string that came in a plastic bag, but I have absolutely no idea what they're for. Then the rest of the instructions I found myself reading several times to grasp. I'll copy some here.
"NOTE: Audio Cable 3.5mm Plug left & right channel inputs are connected in parallel with the channels for the AUX-in jack on the back of the unit. Thus, if connected and played at the same time, audio from a device connected to the internal 3.5mm Audio Plug will be heard at the same time as audio from an external audio device connected to AUX-IN (located on the pack panel of the ECO TERRA & protected by a screw on cap)" [all punctuation, caps, typos SIC] All this in teeny type. I think this means you can use it to do karaoke? Or maybe it's a warning.

Again in the very small type:
"NOTE: Audio to the earphones is not driven by the audio power amplifier of the ECO TERRA. Instead the jack is designed so that the earphones connected to the jack are driven directly by the audio device connected to the internal audio cable plug or the device connected to the Earphones & earphones/microphone features are not universally supported as interoperability may vary by model."

I think the problem there is part of a sentence is missing, but I'm not sure what the first warning is saying. Maybe it means that earphone output will be low?

This was a fantastic purchase for the price
by Nicole M (4 out of 5 stars)
December 10, 2016

This was a fantastic purchase for the price. I spend my summers tubing down a river and wanted to be able to listen to music while doing so. The sound it puts out is great for the size. It stays charged and working for hours on end. It lasted me years before it finally met its demise while I was kayaking and we both got thrown off into rapids. I'm not sure if it was because the amount of time it spent submerged or the fact that it had already had years of wear and tear but it stopped working after that which is the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. If you plan to use it in turbulent water situations like me, I would recommend not using your primary phone and instead using an old backup with some favorite music loaded onto it. Better safe than sorry! But for normal splash situations such as being around the pool or on a boat you needn't worry!

Truly Watertight
by ninjakitty (5 out of 5 stars)
April 10, 2016

We used this one season so far on the water. We river run in our kayaks. We always go in. It does float even though it feels of solid weight when picked up. Strap it to the front or just leave it in the cockpit. It has an immense full sound. It is splashproof. We can use a variety of devices to play from. The color makes it easy to retrieve but it also has a good beaner for tie down. The dry box casing is rugged and truly watertight. Just make sure to wipe water off before opening to make sure no water gets inside due to user sloppiness. Although we have gotten some drops insode case and it was fine. We also use it when working outside landscaping, it is ok after a few tumbles too. So happy with this device. I carry it on my shoulder like an original 80s boombox... strap it to my bike... etc... I expect to use it a ton more on the water this season too.

Great to have when you want to listen to your phone or Ipod outside.
by SwanSimmons (5 out of 5 stars)
August 16, 2013

I really like this Stereo Boombox. I work outside in the yard during early morning or late evening hours. During this time of day we usually get a heavy dew falling, which can really be bad on your electronic equipment. This box keeps my iPod and Droid Phone protected from the dew, and other debris from outside. I do wish I could plug up my phone or iPod and charge it while it is in the boombox, but so far I haven't found that to be the case. Maybe it would work if I used an AC adapter. I really haven't used it in awhile, but I know it was really nice to have, and I didn't worry about dropping, loosing, for forgetting to bring my Droid phone indoors to keep it from being ruined when I did use it. I have not used my iPod in it yet so I cannot tell you how it works with it, but if it works well with a Droid phone I'm pretty sure it will work great with the iPod. I also have the small Ecoxgear waterproof carrier. It works different from this model and I think that may be why I am having difficulty distinguishing as to whether this one charges the device or not. Maybe, someone else can elaborate on ability of this Boombox to charge while playing your device.

BUY THIS NOW!
by Wil W. (5 out of 5 stars)

Just know that a Galaxy S3 is the largest phone this can hold. Which works for me. Even when I switch to a bigger phone I will still keep my S3 full of music and just use it with this. Also this does not charge your phone. I found that you have to use the iPhone setting to get the controls to work with this phone. So, I've listed three flaws so you're probably wondering why I gave it five stars. Well for one, it's waterproof. I mean WATERPROOF. Took it on a tubing trip and tried to be cautious with it, but of course one person on the trip had to throw it in the water. It was fine. The sound is perfect. It's not a DJ system so stop expecting that you will get dance club quality. It works perfectly for my outdoor deck with a bunch of people over, perfectly on the water with friends and it's durable so you can take it anywhere. It lasts forever on cheap batteries. I was amazed. The reason why I know it works well on batteries is because I lost the power cord. A few months after losing the power cord I finally emailed the company to ask how I could purchase a replacement. Their response, "Just let us know exactly which model you have and we'll be happy to mail you a new one." No cost to me, not even shipping. That is amazing. Not many companies out there like that. So I will sing their praises forever. Some friends have the one speaker version and we used it at the beach here in Maine a few weeks ago and it was plenty of sound. Best part is that it is ALWAYS protecting your phone from the elements.
