Better sleep through light, temperature, and monster control
by CM Shifflett (5 out of 5 stars)
January 1, 2018

The many reviews mentioning suddenly improved sleep patterns, especially in children, make perfect sense, if only because this product instantly blocks Closet Monsters. You can't see them, they can't see you. And yet, even though I vanquished my monsters many many years ago, I was surprised by sudden and near-miraculous improvement in my own sleep. Apparently I was more disturbed at night by streetlights and passing cars than I realized.

Even though this is made of thin nylon, even though it's really just a giant windbreaker, I also sleep more warmly -- on the north side of a drafty old house. When I awoke this January morning it was 3 degrees F outside. The room was 59 but inside the bed tent, outside the covers, it was a cozy 71. No more cold nose.

It could be even warmer by throwing a sheet or very light blanket over the top. Nothing heavy, because it will collapse. It is flimsy because it has to be. It's a thin fabric cube self-supported by flexible poles and springs designed for light weight and portability. Support at the bottom comes from the mattress inside. The top of the tent WILL sag and tilt and torque unless bounded by the frame of a bunk bed, poster bed or equivalent.

OTOH, none of that matters much in the dark.

OTOH, because it is so springy, you can trigger an influx of outside (warmer? cooler?) air, by opening the end windows, then pumping the whole assembly like a bellows which can be done simply by poking the sides or ceiling with your toe.

OTOH, shoving a metal grid panel (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TH3QESS/) between the mattress and the wall it stands against immediately corrected the tilt problem besides providing a sturdy spot for hooks to hang a CD rack.

Some have commented on the difficulty of zipping it fully closed. The seaming for side panels and zippers may be a bit too tight on some. Rather than strain the zipper by forcing it around the curve, zip UP from the bottom. Or, just leave those few inches open for air. Air is good. One could pin a little towel or curtain there, if desired. As is, the gap is useful for peeking out at the alarm clock because the black fabric is too light-dimming to see the illuminated numbers through the wall.

Before putting it up, locate the opening for power cords. Mine ended up with the power opening on the ceiling. The cord for a reading light passes through that unzippable part (which now, a month later, has relaxed enough to zip just fine). Not worth redoing, for that and another reason. Some reviewers mention the bother of rolling up the side, or snaps that have broken. Because mine is upside down, when opened, the side wall just falls gracefully down to the floor, hiding the Under-The-Bed books and shoes.

So basically, it's an update to the canopy bed, not the tulle-draped Disney princess fantasy ones, but the old traditional life-saving winter ones. Our ancestors draped them with heavy curtains to survive winter cold by body-heating a smaller enclosed space. This would have been especially important if living in a big drafty house (even Ebenezer Scrooge invested in dark, heavy bed-curtains) or a windswept castle tower (like the children at Hogwarts). The Privacy Pop is an emergency / pre-fab / portable version of that or the traditional blanket tent under the chairs.

For those concerned about the price, a simple frame with curtains -- even of nothing more than dark sheets -- would accomplish the same or greater privacy, light-blocking, and draft control. Still, the zippered design provides extra value.

Zipping the openings shut is so much more firm and final than merely closing curtains that can be stirred, fluttered, or easily swept aside again by ghostly hands or zombies. Because the tent wraps around the mattress, it automatically blocks snakes and all other Under-the-Bed Monsters from crawling up and in. When I was a kid, my Under-the-Bed was home to the giant squid from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." My sister had the snakes from "Gunga Din." Today it seems to me that even those terrors would lose their power over the child (or adult) tucked safely inside this simple but magically protective refuge.

It was easy to set up- my only issue with it now ...
by L. Rice (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this for my child who is autistic and had been hiding himself under the bed to relax in the dark- only to catch his hair on the bedframe and be miserable. We don't have a lot of space where we live and it's difficult to really carve out alone time when his sibling also is always 'right there'. So when we saw the advertisement for the privacy pop tent, we decided that we'd buy it for him for Christmas. It was easy to set up- my only issue with it now is that I rarely see my child because he loves it so much! Would purchase again.

Great tent for children on the spectrum

Fit perfectly on my sons bed. Mattress fit perfectly and with enough wiggles room to adjust. Not too tall either so it doesn't feel like it's overwhelming the room. Easy to assemble.

Great!

Worth every penny. Bought this for deployment and it has been the best purchase I've made to help me get through living with 12 other people. Yes the zippers are a little flimsy but I make sure I pull the pieces together before I start to zipper and they haven't broken yet, it's been 7months. I recommend

GREAT idea & product!

This is a personal thing I think but if you like the isolation or need to sleep or relax away from the light, this is an amazing product. It sets up easy, seems sturdy and durable and I am extremely glad I found this as I use it every night. It maybe a bit over priced, especially for a big bed but other than that, I would even buy an extra so I always had one available. Can't say enopugh good things about this product.

A Few Flaws, but Overall Very Useful!
by Kristen Burns (4 out of 5 stars)
April 26, 2018

*I know it says I bought the twin size, but I'm actually using a queen size. Been using it for about a year now.*

Pros:
- Keeps light out. I'm not an early riser, and while I do have sun-blocking shades on my windows, they only do so much. Combined with this, it keeps things nice and dark while I sleep. If you have a roommate or ever need to sleep while lights are on sometimes, it won't be the same as sleeping with the lights off, but I have taken naps inside my tent with the lights on. It does a decent job of blocking room lights.
- Keeps bugs out. I've never really tested this, but I like the peace of mind it gives me.
- Privacy, if you share a room.
- If you live in an efficiency or apartment with only one room, it can feel kind of weird having your bed in the same room as your kitchen or living room or in a room where people come into when you have company over. This tent can keep your "bedroom" private and can even be used to kind of partition the room a bit. I live in kind of an efficiency, and I keep one side zipped at all times like it's a wall, and I unzip the other side when I need to and have managed to form a bedroom area within my room.
- Keeps things from falling off your bed (if you bring your phone, electronics, books, etc. into bed with you).
- It's cozy-feeling.
***

Cons:
- If you like to read or do anything in bed that requires light, that might be a problem. A lamp might work, but not overhead lights.
- Not pretty to look at.
- Reduces air flow, so it's warmer inside the tent (which is usually a positive for me since I get cold easily, but I feel like it's probably a negative to most people).
- Harder to remove/put on sheets.
- The bottom poles didn't fit inside my bed frame (they were too long). I would say that maybe it's just the bed I bought, but my mattress fits fine, so. I think maybe this wasn't designed with beds that have frames that wrap all the way around the bed (the kind that the mattress rests inside rather than just on top of) in mind. Either that, or I got faulty poles. I had to put the tent up without the poles on the bottom and rely on the mattress to keep it in place, so my tent is sturdy enough but a bit lopsided.
- The mattress doesn't lie flat at the top and bottom because the tent curves up. I have one of those squishy mattresses, so it's not really a problem for me, but it might be more noticeable with a spring mattress or something firm.
***

Overall it has more pros than cons for me. It definitely has some things that could be improved, and I had to dock it one star for the poles not fitting, but it's very useful!

I've known several outdoor tents in my day...
by rolex,Top Contributor: Cycling (4 out of 5 stars)

There is a lot of problems with it, but I still love it.

Honestly, something like ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 2 Tent is

cheaper,

more structurally sound, and

capable of being used outside

but regular outdoor tents have to be secured to the ground usually, and are more dome like than cubical.

I like the cubical nature of this tent. It allows me to sit upright and not watch my head like in smaller tents.

I particularly like that this tent is very light and seems easy to carry around, deconstruct, and fold into the bag.

If you are going to move around, you'll easily be able to take this tent with you across country or further.

I don't like that the tent is not structurally sound though. It bends forward a little without me in it and feels a little flimsy.

It's not so much that you can't enjoy it, but it is noticeable. It is also very expensive in comparison to the

outdoor tent. The manufacturing of the tent seems like half that of standard 1-2 people outdoor tents, but

costs twice as much as the example tent above.
