It takes patience and luck

I divided the plugs between 2 logs - one from a live tree and one from a dead tree. I think the recommendation to use a live log is to reduce the potential for competing fungi. The mycelia did not "take" on the live log. On the dead log, the mycelia slowly grew as a white mat over the surface of the log. I kept the log in a plastic storage container and spritzed it with water every day or so. Finally after 8 months, some mushrooms popped out of the sides of the log. The mushrooms are small (about an inch in length), and to the human eye they have a whitish bioluminescence. In the dark with little light, the human eye sees with the rods in the retina, which see only in white, black, and graytones. Color vision (the cones in the retina) requires more light. However, the camera "sees" the bioluminescence in its actual pale green color (see photo).

Growing these mushrooms is no sure thing, but with patience and conscientious care, it is possible.

I planted these into a wooden center piece for a vivarium dart frog tank. It took about 3 months for the mushrooms to grow small glowing sprouts from the wood, now I have larger actual mushroom shaped guys sticking it from the log, everything glows but faintly, still very very cool. The glow is a Dim white however not green, which I like better anyways. I tried to take photos but it won't register on my phone camera, not enough light, but attached is the mushrooms in the light.

I did not read the instructions, so I did not use the candle wax. But I ordered them on August 15th, and I thought they had all just died. Until November second, when I noticed that some tiny mushrooms had started to come up off the plug and surrounding wood in my bioactive vivarium. I'm super excited for these mushrooms to get larger.

Its growing and glowing!

I bought this kit at the end of October (it is now Dec. 10th) and started it within a week, so very late October/very early November. Following the instructions I went out and found a relatively freshly cut piece of hardwood, drilled the holes, inserted the dowels, waxed it over, everything the instructions said to do. I then put the log into a rubbermaid storage container I had laying around along with enough water to keep the wood well moist, closed the lid, and set it aside for over a month.

I opened it up last night to check on it, and was pleased to see sheets of white fungus spreading all across the surface of the log, so I turned out all of the lights in the house, let my eyes adjust, and viola, the white sheets were most definitely glowing greenish-white, the same color you associate with those cheap glow in the dark dollar store stickers! Its not going to light up an entire room by any means, but if its dark you can definitely see the glow.

Now that its well stated, I've taken it out of the storage container (read that this species likes some fresh air once it's to this stage) and put it in a small walmart aquarium to display it. Soon as it starts growing some actual mushroom caps its going to look awesome.

So bottom line, this is indeed the real deal. Follow the directions and be patient, and you'll be rewarded with glow in the dark mushrooms. I can only hope that as my mushrooms grow bigger and stronger, their glow will get brighter as well.

Extra Bonus: During my reading I discovered that this species is also known for having glowing roots (well, mycelium, but same thing for the laymen) which grow all through the wood. When full mature, the colony will actually make the wood itself appear to faintly glow as well.

slow bioluminescent fun!

These are pretty cool. I knocked off one star only because the mushrooms it produces don't appear to match the picture and the instructions hadn't been proofread; mine all have the stem attached to the side of the cap, so I'm not convinced that they are actually exactly the same ones. Other than that, I'm quite happy.

They do indeed glow in the dark by themselves, however the ones I have were extremely faint; your eyes need to be dark adapted to see them. They're really neat when you get up in the middle of the night, but going into a dark room from daylight you'll have to sit and wait a while for your eyes to adjust before you can see them. However, please note that the growing conditions are supposed to make a difference, and I grew them on a maple log rather than the suggested oak, and they don't have great airflow, and didn't follow soaking instructions exactly I don't think, so they might end up being brighter for your you with proper growing conditions and the pH of the wood used. Mine ended up with between 1/4" and 3/4" diameter caps, plus misc other growth in odd shapes that is at this point nearly covering the entire piece of wood.

At first I had them enclosed in a terrarium and they were just weird shapes, not a classic mushroom shape. However after reading elsewhere that possibly better airflow was important as well, I started trying to change the air in the terrarium once or twice a day, and either by coincidence or because of that, they started developing caps after that point.

I was unclear if I was supposed to soak them in water after growth started, or if that could damage them, so I ignored the instructions and started just misting them and dribbling water on the top of the log where it would soak in.

My first batch seemed to have been dead (simply wooden dowels), but they were promptly replaced when I told them about it. Great instructions and everything you need to start but the wood. I am very anxious to see results!

Got here quick and ready to go but in my opinion it should have had a few more plugs but also had detailed instructions.
