Setup harder than necessary and has some surprising limitations
by Amazon Customer (2 out of 5 stars)
December 14, 2016

I have a Fitbit Charge 2 and decided to add the Aria scale. I really like the Charge 2 and would give that a 4 out of 5 rating.

The Aria Scale only gets a 2 out of 5 star rating in my book. It works but has some issues which are enumerated below:
1. Scale is significantly harder than it should be to set up. If you want to change what router its paired with, that is also a more difficult than it has any right to be. In general, you are better off using a PC/laptop setting this thing up than using a phone. However, the PC/laptop must have a wireless network card. Also, you have to download the setup program and on my laptop, the program window is much smaller than it should be making it a unnecessarily difficult challenge to navigate through the screens and complete the setup process.
2. Unlike the Fitbit watches, the scale doesn't use Bluetooth. Instead, it relies solely on Wifi. This means that you can't have your scale too far away from your router/wireless access point. The last thing I want to have to do is install a wireless access point in my bathroom for a scale.
3. The scale takes longer to determine and display your weight than a normal scale. The delay isn't enormous but once again it seems like unnecessary, though small, inconvenience.

If none of the above issues is a major concern and you want a scale that sync up with your Fitbit then go ahead and purchase. Otherwise, I'd wait for version 2.0 of the scale. It seems like they will definitely have to improve the setup process and hopefully the speed which the scale will display your weight. I'm not sure newer versions of the Aria scale will support blue tooth but who knows, we can always hope that this feature will someday see the light of day. I suspect that one of the challenges with adding blue tooth in the future is the power consumption - it would either eat through batteries or need to be plugged in.

Don't buy this!
by Anna Lyses (1 out of 5 stars)

**PLEASE be warned when purchasing a Fitbit Aria scale!** It becomes defective and Fitbit refuses to take responsibility.

The company does not stand by their defective scales. If their scale decides to be defective after the 1 year warrantee they do not offer any solutions to the problem. No fix, repair, or replacement. They tell you "Sorry, there is nothing we can do." Please see the photos of the customer service transcription telling me their item IS defective yet there is nothing they will do because it is "outside of the 1 year warrantee".

There is a forum thread in their online community that is 21 pages long of people with this same issue, yet they still refuse to take responsibility for it.

I purchased this scale in 2014 and hardly used it. By hardly used it, I mean that I hardly ever used it. I purchased a Salter scale years before this one that was far more accurate, by the way. The Fitbit Aria was always at least 7-10lbs off and the measurement varied every single time anyone weighed themselves. This left me using the Salter every time I weighed myself, which was every morning for about two years. The only time I used the Aria was when I wanted to log my weight in the app which was maybe bi-monthly for about a year. I ended up getting an Apple watch and no longer used the Fitbit. From that point on the Aria was used maybe a few times a year. The scale had VERY LITTLE USE. I wouldn't be as upset if it had actually taken a beating and/or been a workhorse.

Fast forward to yesterday (June 2018) and I decide to weigh myself on my very expensive Aria so I can keep a visual of my weight because I'm starting a workout program in hopes to 'tighten up' a bit. Well, that's a no-go! I get "measuring">"step off">"thinking">Err" every single time! So naturally I refer to Dr. Google to see if there is something I can fix. I land on Fitbit's 21 page community thread about this exact issue and follow the recommended advice; remove batteries, wait 15 sec, etc - which mind you worked for no one in this thread. It didn't help, still the same "err" message.

I decide to start a live chat, as mentioned above, and I am informed that they won't help me because I'm out of my one year warrantee and they don't offer to repair/fix this defect within their item. So here I am with a $129 dollar decoration piece. Because it's defective it. Because the company refuses to take responsibility for their defective item. Because I was stupid enough to buy it.

One could argue that I could have chosen to use it heavily for the years I owned it so I shouldn't complain. Either way a company should recognize a common defect with their item and at least offer to repair it. And if I pay $129 for a scale I do expect it to LAST and be good QUALITY. I mean sheesh, I paid $39 for the Salter weight/water/body fat scale that has taken a whooping and is still going strong after 7+ years. How could I not expect to spend $129 and get a better longer lasting product?

To recap:
-I purchased a Fitbit Aria scale in 2014
-It was HARDLY used (proof was seen by CS rep in my account)
-In 2019 I'm told by a CS rep my scale is now defective (it did work for 3+ years)
-Fitbit refuses to offer even a fix/repair for it
-I have to throw it out - goody bye $129

Please consider your purchasing options wisely, don't throw your money away like I did. I had to leave this review because if I had know 5 years down the road the scale would become defective I would have never purchased it. I don't think anyone buys a scale to use for just a few years, usually it's for a lifestyle change and will be used for many years to come. Not the Aria, get all your exercise and dieting in within 4-5 years before the defects happen. And make sure you don't decide after 4 years to start a new exercise program and have the Aria log your weight...cuz it will be defective at that point and Fitbit doesn't care.

For this price I would hope to get more than 12 months of trouble-free use from it.
by Chris C. (1 out of 5 stars)
December 2, 2016

I've had this for 20 months and we been using it daily, but it is not built to last. We use it on a tile floor, two adults, neither one of us over 170 lbs. For the first 12 months and it worked fine. Then it started telling you to "Step Off" the scale after you were already off of it. Giving it a little poke with a toe would fool it into realizing nobody was on it. This worked for 3 - 4 months, but then randomly it would turn on in the middle of the night and ask you to "Step off". Needless to say it started eating batteries because of this. We keep it on a tile floor free from dust and grime,so it is not like the weights sensors are all gummed up with gunk (I checked). I've cleaned everything out with compressed air, but it seems like something is broken inside. For this price I would hope to get more than 12 months of trouble-free use from it.

Also, you can't send the data to anything but the Fitbit app as far as I can tell. Which is too bad, since I stopped using my Fitbit and switched to an apple watch.

Stopped working after a little over a year, and Fitbit wouldn't replace it
by Christopher Taylor (1 out of 5 stars)
March 18, 2017

After using the scale for a little over a year, it stopped working. Every time I'd walk into the room the scale display would turn on and it would drain the battery. I go through a set of batteries almost every month. I called customer support, and they said I was out of luck since it has been over a year. The scale is not worth the money.

DO NOT BUY THIS SCALE IF YOU HAVE AN INTERNET WITH COMCAST AND HAVE AN XFINITY MODEM
by Colin-Chad Gill (1 out of 5 stars)
January 11, 2015

THIS IS THE SECOND ARIA I HAVE BOUGHT FROM AMAZON. THE FIRST ONE CAME LAST WEEK AND I COULD NOT GET IT TO SYNC. I SPENT 4 HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH FITBIT TO TRY TO FIX THE ISSUE. WE COULD NOT GET IT TO SYNC SO THEY ADVISE THAT I SEND IT BACK TO AMAZON. I DID THIS THIS. I GOT THE NEW SCALE YESTERDAY AND TRIED TO SYNC IT TODAY AND HAD THE SAME ISSUES. I COULD CUSTOMER SUPPORT AGAIN AND WAS TOLD IT MORE THAN LIKELY WOULD NOTY SYNC WITH MY MODEM. THEY SENT ME INSTRUCTIONS TO TRY BUT IT DID NOT WORK. WHY THEY DO NOT PUBLISH THIS INFO IS BEYOND ME.

Hi Colin,

We're sorry to hear that you're still experiencing trouble with your scale. We appreciate your efforts to troubleshoot.

The error you are encountering indicates that the scale has been unable to communicate with your router. The most common reason for this is the router's configuration. Based on your particular router, you may need to change the setting from N-only to mixed mode. (The following instructions were found here: http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/about-the-wireless-gateway/)

If you have an '802.11 b' device, the gateway's Wi-Fi mode needs to be set to '802.11 b/g/n' to allow 'b' devices to connect:
1. Log in to the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1.
2. Go to Gateway > Connection > WiFi.
3. Click Edit.
4. For Mode, select 802.11 b/g/n.
5. Click Save Settings.

After you've made this change, we recommend the following tips before attempting setup again:
1. Keep the scale within 10 feet of your main router.
2. Clear the cache and cookies in your browser.
3. Keep the Automatic (DHCP) IP setup. Static IP configuration is not supported.

Please let us know if you still need assistance setting up your Aria.

Sincerely,

Marie M and the Fitbit Team

A very expensive mistake
by Fountain-head (1 out of 5 stars)
December 4, 2017

I have many, many "smart home", "connected Home" products from; NEST thermostats and smoke/co detectors to WEBMO outlets and switches. I have never had any difficulty setting-up any of these devices (even the klugey WEBMO's). But after a years ownership, I STILL cannot get this scale synched with ANY of my devices ... not my desktop computer, laptop, iPad, or iPhone. Every attempt has FAILED. I've read that I need to reset my WiFi to the FitBit frequency or some such nonsense ... and even that "hack" didn't work. Then ... after about 6mos. Usage (as a ... "welcome guest") the scale stopped working. So I checked the (factory supplied) batteries and found one of them exploded and leaking in the battery case. Thankfully, I caught it before the infection had spread and battery acid ruined the whole scale ... but it still won't connect to any of my devices. And NONE of the connected features are operable. I WANT this thing to WORK. That's why I paid so DAMN much $$$money$$$ for it. But the software programming must have been done in reverse Chinese, upside down characters. Because it cannot seem to find ANY of my wireless signals (that successfully operate countless devices in my home). Arrrrggghhhh !!! Who designed this thing!!! I have NEVER been so frustrated by ANY device like this one ... Crap!! It's total crap!!! PS ... my wife has 2-FitBit personal tracking devices that work just fine. Who was the IDIOT at FitBit that designed this PIG?

Great when it worked but now a piece of junk
by J. B. Thibault (1 out of 5 stars)
October 21, 2018

Worked great initially. Loved the auto sync with my Fitbit dashboard. Several months into use, right after end of warranty, started to give a THINKING, then ERR message every time I step on it. Reset etc doesn't change anything; trust me I've tried everything. Turns out a google search reports that this is a common problem with the Fitbit aria and there's no solution. Fitbit customer support was lousy: they refused to exchange the unit (days after end of warranty) and didn't offer any help. They must know of this common problem by leave their customers hanging. I will continue using my tracker but strongly recommend against this scale. There are cheaper alternatives that sync with Fitbit and are far more reliable. Shame on Fitbit for this one.

Highly Inaccurate
by Lisa V Wood (1 out of 5 stars)
November 8, 2018

I felt the need to write this review so long after my purchase, because I have recently joined a gym with a nice quality scale that's well calibrated.

I was shocked to discover that my fitbit Aria was not accurate at all. First I thought that maybe my gym scale was off, but I made sure to take note of my weight at my doctor's office.

After I discovered that, I started using my Aria every single day, two times in a row in the morning. I was shocked to discover that not only was my weight 2-5lbs higher on the Aria, but that the weight reading changed after I stepped on in a second time.

I followed the official fitbit troubleshooting instructions, to no avail. Since it's too late to return the item, I'll have to be satisfied by leaving a negative review.

Buyer beware! This scale is NOT accurate.

Great concept, but body fat in accurate and not precise
by Ross Y. (2 out of 5 stars)
April 23, 2016

I am a fitness junky, and I purchased this device because I already had a Fitbit and thought it'd be nice to have my weight and body fat automatically tracked along with my other stats. I have been mainly disappointed with the product. The body fat measurement definitely lacks accuracy and precision. I wasn't as disappointed about the lack of accuracy (as mostly I was caring about a general trend) however the day to day jumps have been 2-3% at times. That is much more than any noise in measurement, and is big enough to really hide your progress (or lack of). I still use it because it is nice to track my weight, but probably not worth the high price tag. I have attached a months log of body fat to show how big the spread is. Swings of 3-4% are just unacceptable.

Too expensive for such short lifespan
by SDC (1 out of 5 stars)
June 20, 2017

I've had this scale for 3 years and it worked most of the time, occasionally needing to be re-setup, but for the most part worked well. Now it's turning itself on without stepping on it which burns up the batteries all day, and needs to be constantly re-setup. I called Customer Support and they basically said "Buy a new one." A $130 scale that won't last more than three years is unacceptable. There are other scales out there that do as much if not more than the Aria, so save your money and check out one for half the price. I just purchased the Hylogy Body Weight Scale, Digital Body Fat Scale with Auto Recognition and Step-on Technology High Precision and Large Lighted Display on Amazon for $36.99 and it does twice as much as the Aria. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XP9TB98/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'll keep you posted on how reliable it is after a few months.
