Loss Mama Essential + Tips for Common Issues (Newborn Use, False Alarms, Batteries)
by Samantha (5 out of 5 stars)
June 29, 2018

I cannot sing the praises of this little device enough. If you are struggling with postpartum anxiety, the Snuza is a lifesaver - worth EVERY penny (and every false alarm!). After losing my daughter 2 days before my due date to stillbirth, I was frantic with terror that our son (born a year later) would die suddenly and inexplicably as well. If not for the Snuza, I don't think I would have slept the entire first year of his life. And now almost 4 years later with our second daughter, even though my PPA is much better this time around, it still just takes SUCH a weight off knowing she's wearing it. I really cannot recommend this product enough, especially for anyone who has lost a child and is terrified of it happening again. Yes, some cases of SIDS may not be preventable, but at the very least you'll know you did everything in your power to save your baby (and if you're already living with a lifetime of guilt over another loss, you know how much that is worth!).

There are a lot of cool monitors on the market these days (much more so than when we bought our Snuza 4 years ago), but I still would choose this over the others for several reasons. First, the simplicity - it's a small, portable, self-contained, mechanical (no bluetooth/wifi/electrical waves) monitor with no cords, no connectivity issues, no recharging, etc. Unlike other products, you don't have to worry about it syncing with your phone, there are no extra parts or potentially strangling cords to keep track of, and you can bring it anywhere. It's very straightforward to use, gives you just the information you need, and is very reliable. Not to mention the price is a fraction of some of the other options out there.

Of course, no product is perfect, and this one is not without its drawbacks. That being said, we've found workable solutions for pretty much every issue we've run into. In case it's helpful to anyone else, here is a rundown of the top issues and the solutions we've used:

Issue: Too big to use on newborn diaper, especially while umbilical cord stump is in the way

Solution: Make a Snuza pocket onesie (see photo for example). It's very easy and works like a charm - simply take a snug-fitting onesie, grab a patch of extra fabric (something stiff-ish works best) and cut it into a small pocket just big enough to slide the Snuza clip into (you may want to fold over the top edge a few times to give it a thicker part to clip onto more securely), then sew/glue the pocket on the onesie so that the Snuza will sit on chest just above the umbilical cord stump. Put this under your baby's sleep sack and you're golden. (If the light seems to be flashing too bright in baby's face, a few layers of painter's tape will do the trick to dim it so it's not obnoxious.)

Issue: Battery problems (dead on arrival, hard to find replacements, replacements don't last)

Solution: We got burned by this twice (ended up with a dead Snuza for the first week of our child's life), so don't do what we did. About a week before your baby is due, test your Snuza and make sure it's working. Even if it seems great, order a set of backup batteries and put them in your hospital bag now (with my son, our Snuza magically died in the days before he was born, and we didn't have a backup on hand). If you already have backup batteries, test them out before packing (with our daughter, we thought we were good with the 10 leftover batteries we had in the house - turns out they all magically died in storage in the preceding years!); actually, test them even if they're new (and then we accidentally ordered the wrong replacement batteries, sigh). Unfortunately the batteries are hard to find (we've only been able to get them from Amazon) and the ones sold on Amazon have terrible reviews - we have not found a solution to that, but luckily we haven't really experienced the issues others are reporting so it's been okay.

Issue: False alarms

Solution: This bothers my husband way more than it bothers me - in my opinion, any number of false alarms is well worth the alternative of not catching a true emergency, so the top "solution" here is to just adjust your perspective (easier said than done when sleep-deprived, I know). That being said, depending on *why* you're getting false alarms, there are options. First, if it just won't stay on the diaper, try the Snuza pocket onesie idea above - may even work for an older baby who's rolling a lot or whose diaper gets too full overnight and loosens the Snuza (this started happening to us when my son got closer to a year and was sleeping through the night). I've also seen videos on YouTube of a DIY strap/belt that goes on top of the diaper. My other tip here is to get the Snuza Hero (not the cheaper model) b/c the vibration feature gives you a chance to turn it off *before* the alarm sounds and wakes the whole house (though my kids seem to sleep through the alarm anyway!) - I got really good at hearing the vibration in my sleep and quickly reaching over to deactivate it (right through the sleep sack) before checking on baby. Of course this won't work if your baby sleeps in a different room, but something to consider if you're really having a lot of false alarms and are committed to finding a solution.

And really those are the only drawbacks we've found, again all with at least semi-workable solutions, and to my mind at least, well worth the peace of mind you get from the device. I recommend the Snuza to every new parent and will be using it with all of my kids for sure.

This has literally been the best purchase I have made for our daughter
by Jennifer Duffey (5 out of 5 stars)

This has literally been the best purchase I have made for our daughter. She has stopped breathing a few times in her sleep. Twice was just long enough for the vibration to wake her. So the alarm didnt go off, but it made her breath. The light was blinking red when she woke later on so thats how I even knew. The other time she stopped breathing and It sounded the alarm. I had to gently shake her to get her to breath again.

I honeslty dont know that she would be here, if we didnt have this on her. She is 3 months old and weve been using it since she was a week old. It gives us peace of mind at night knowing that shes got something on her that will gently wake her, or us, if she stops breathing.

Caused blister
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)

My baby is 11 weeks old and I've used the snuza without any issues up until this morning. It gave him HUGE blister. I put the snuza on around 9pm when my baby went to sleep and removed it at 6:30am when he woke. He was extra squirmy last night but I still don't think a product for babies should cause blisters.

False Alarms Galore

I wish I had the box to return this. I'm so disappointed, we get SEVERAL false alarms a night, to the point where we've stopped using it. I have more peace of mind without it. Pretty sure I ripped a C section stitch flying out of bed to check on her so many times. Thanks Snuza.

MUST HAVE!!!
by IloveSDF (5 out of 5 stars)

This is a must have. I would not be sleeping well without it.

Some people complain about false alarms. Oh well! I would rather have a false alarm every single night than a baby that stopped breathing. And those false alarms are only caused by the device not being attached properly or it coming loose, which is a result of it not being attached properly... See where I'm going with this?

If you are like me and super paranoid about SIDS, get this. I will never NOT use this. I would pay way more for it too. Do not hesitate. Buy it for your piece of mind. Oh and I am not being paid for my review or anything. I am a mom of a 4.5 month old and I just simply love this product and want others to know how wonderful it is too!

My number 1 favorite baby product
by Alex Ontiveros (5 out of 5 stars)

When my son was born and we were sent to our recovery room we were settling down for the night when he started choking and spit up a ton of amniotic fluid. I had no clue what to do. I pushed the call buttons but they didn't work. I couldn't find a suction bulb. Luckily My Mom instincts kicked in and I pulled him out of the bassinet and patted his back until the fluid was all out. It was enough to scare me to death though. After that first night I didn't want to sleep for fear that he would stop breathing. I just sat up and watched him as I grew more and more sleep deprived (I also was refusing to let people help me, in large part because of my Postpartum depression and anxiety... but that's another story). I stayed up for the first 5 days. And then we remembered we had bought the Snuza. The Snuza clips on the baby's diaper and will sound and alarm if breath movement is not detected. I've had two false alarms so far and that alarm is enough to scare me for life, lol. It ticks every time he breathes... that gives me the reassurance I need. Especially when driving and he's in the back seat not as accessible. I'd probably still not be sleeping if it weren't for the Snuza.

TRULY A LIFE SAVER!!
by Angela (5 out of 5 stars)

I always purchase items from Amazon..so much that I'm even a Prime member...yet I have never written a product review for any of my purchases regardless of how much I liked/hated the product. But in this case, and in hopes of my review possibly helping someone purchase this for their infant, I have decided to write my first review.

At first I thought this product was pricey but after comparing it to all other breathing monitors, I found this to be the best choice and most reliable of them all. I was skeptical after reading some of the reviews on here and about the batery life but decided to purchase it anyways for my first born who always had nasal problems since birth. Having used it nightly for the past 3 months now, I never received a false alarm, dead battery, or sound/vibration errors.

Tonight, my four month old daughter (who sleeps in her own room since she snores loudly yet is a very light sleeper) fell into a deep sleep and stopped breathing. The monitor tried to vibrate her after 15 seconds and because she did not respond to that, it started to beep loudly. At first my husband and I thought it was our phone alarm going off but then realized it was the monitor. We rushed to her and yelled her name yet she lied still. I picked her up and shook her a bit while we both yelled at her and made loud clapping noises to which she finally responded and woke up. If it wasn't for this product, I honestly wouldn't know what to do with myself. Please don't let the price deter you from buying this...I would pay 3 times the price for what it did for us tonight. Also it's hard to get false alarms since it's easy to put on and heck even if you do get a false alarm, I'd rather have that then something worse happen!! I hope my review has helped. I never upsell anything until tonight

Buy owlet instead
by Buttercup (1 out of 5 stars)
October 2, 2018

I bought this product after the death of my son. I had a hard time trusting that his twin sister was ok. After approximately 1 month the battery seemed to die on my Snuza. I replaced it but the unit still didn't work. I contacted the company and they did not stand by their product. I should have written this 3 years ago when it happened but I was too distraught. We got a hospital pulse ox instead.

With this baby we bought an owlet instead and have had no issues with it. I would stay away from Snuza. They just want to sell you a unit. They don't care if it works.

2 YEAR UPDATE:

We still use this on our almost 2 year old because she sleeps in bed with us and I always worry about the blankets going over her face and stuff like that. Still works amazing. Only had to change the batter 3 times in 2 years. This will always be my number 1 recommended baby product.

LONG TIME REVIEW: We have been using this Snuza every time our daughter has slept for almost exactly 1 year. We've had to replace the battery twice so far. I have nothing but WONDERFUL THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THIS. This is a must have for every new parent. If you are considering this, do not hesitate. You will never think "Man, I am bummed I spent $100 on this". The peace of mind it gives you is worth every penny.

I can sleep better
by Samaki B. (5 out of 5 stars)

My son has reflux issues and whenever he is on his back he is gagging. When I put him in his stomach he sleeps good. I bought this so I wouldn't have to watch him sleep. I tried this on myself to see what triggered it. I had to be perfectly still and hold my breath in order for it to alert me. I watch it light up with each breath he takes. I haven't had any false alarms. The only time it has gone off is when he rolled over. I love this device. I seen it was FSA eligible after I paid for it.

I saw someone post their baby got a blister from it being on the babies skin so I keep a thin onesie on and it works
