I purchased this compass after reading the comments posted by other people and was excited to see that a lot of them were positive in the quality of the piece. Although once it arrived I was dismayed to see that the compass would not close all the way and that there are spots on the plastic inside the compass.

I went to return it and although it says that my window for return is till January 31st, so I am not able to return it and it says my window is already closed even though it is only December 11th. I received the item on December 1st and so I should be able to return it according to Amazon's return policy.

Also there is a scratch on the back of it that I was hoping was just something on it but appears not to be. The hoop at the top is also crooked and seems to be misshapen.

The pictures attached are of these flaws that the compass has.

Wonderful for a treasure hunt

These were the biggest hit at my son's pirate treasure hunt birthday party. They worked great and each pirate mate had one to use to hunt for treasure. Made great take-home gifts for each of the kids as well.

Bought this just to use for very basic cardinal directions...it failed. The needle never seemed to have any sort of consistency in showing north. According to this item, north is whatever direction the needle stops at after spinning. I understood buying this that it wasn't going to be the ultimate compass, but that was partially my intentions. The brass casing(which felt very much like aluminum) was stuck shut right out of the package, i had to pry it with a knife, the hinge was already bent, the ring was only attached on one side, and the lid had a clear break on one side. All of this was right out of the packaging.

It's a cheap price, yes, but not the product is even cheaper.

Waste of money! I was expecting the cheap quality, it's under $10, what would you expect. However, I expected it to function properly. It doesn't read properly. I normally don't write negative reviews because let's face it, I'm not going to ruin someone's business over a lemon. I usually just get it exchanged. Problem solved. However, this is a "non-returnable or exchangeable" item. How can they not exchange a defective item?! I thought I would warn others before making their purchase. My picture shows my car reading East and the compass is reading NE. Even when the car was reading West, it was reading North.

I got this for my husband because he has a major pocket watch collection. I have just about run out of watches I can find that are affordable that I have not already got for him over the past ten plus years. I saw this and thought it was pretty, it was very inexpensive and that always helps. I thought closed it looked a lot like a pocket watch, when he gets it he will at first assumed that is what it is. I was right when he first pulled it out of the box I put it in he started to say thanks for the pocket watch and when he opened it he fell short mid-sentence and smiled real big and said Oh wow this is so neat a compass I do not have one of these. So my idea was pulled off without a hitch.... well one hitch... I had gotten this for him and also this astrolabe thingy that honestly I do not know that that is or didnt till he told me when he opened it one of the features on the astrolabe is a compass dial! If I had known that I would not have gotten this one. He never complained about getting two compass's this Christmas he seems to love them both. So all in all win win for team.

Extremely disappointed. Unusable product

Terrible. Gold part is fine. Paper in the bottom is fine. No directional "arrow" attached or in the package. It seems like an unfinished product. There's a plastic circle insert that doesn't have the NSEW or degrees around it. Can't return it due to "policy"

A lot better then I expected. After reading some of the other reviews I thought it would be a cheap piece of crud but it's not. Well it's not a top end compass and I wouldn't bet my life on it in the middle of winter with nothing is sight but for what it is it's fine. It will tell you where North is within some degree of accuracy and it will get you out of the woods if needs be. As for the looks, its far better then I expected, this is a good deal as long as you're not expecting some professional compass but for a very nice novelty that does work pretty good I'm happy with it. When the magnetic poles flip "N" for "S" and "S" for "N" or anywhere in between those $300 compass's people are getting will all become worthless instantly anyway. This one is looking better all the time. (hahaha....)

awesome first REAL compass

awesome quality for the price. This was a gift for kindergartner. it works well. it is perfect for learning about directions. metal outer shell, plastic rotating window. I am very happy with this product, and my daughter is thrilled to have a real compass instead of a cheap plastic toy one. i'm sure it will most likely not last a lifetime, especially in the hands of a 5 year old, but for this price, i'm ok with that. it has taken one drop already with no damage, yay!

Works well, but flimsy

Works ok. Just got it and haven't had a chance to use it a lot, but it's a compass so not a complicated piece of technology. The metal encasing is flimsy though. Super thin and feels like if you don't take your time closing it you can bend it and not be able to close it anymore without straightening it with pliers or something. For the price you can't expect a whole lot more I guess.

Exquisite quality and workmanship

I bought this as a prop for an upcoming Pirate costume photo shoot, and the detail and craftsmanship is amazing at this low price! Anr it is very accurate too, even indoors. It has a rotating clear dial on the outer edge, I need to look up its use, but possibly to mark the direction you need to go to get to your destination. Glad to own this, and a beautiful low cost gift for any hiker. It should last many years with proper handling.
