5 out of 5 devices I've gotten have performed remarkably
by Shawn B. Wikle (5 out of 5 stars)
July 30, 2015

I have owned 5 ioSafe devices. I would say I am hitting 80%. I was a very early customer of ioSafe and had a USB 2.0 model early on. So I've been using these for a while. Right now I have 2 of the USB 3.0 3TB drives hooked up to my primary desktop system. One of the drives works flawlessly. The other drops connection from time to time. I can't use it as a backup device because at least 50% of the time I get a fatal I/O error and the device goes offline in the middle of the full backup. A short term process like an incremental backup seems to work 95% of the time. This has been true since the day it arrived (maybe a year ago or more?). I have hooked it up to at least 3 other computers with USB 3.0 ports and have seen the same phenomenon.... dropped USB connections. I sent it back to ioSafe for repair or replacement shortly after I received it and after I had tested it pretty thoroughly myself. I tried different computers, different USB ports, and different cables. This device always failed about 50% of the time on long operations and all my other ioSafe devices worked like a champ. They kept the device for a week or so and sent it back. As far as I can tell there was nothing done at all. My experimentation has shown the same symptoms now as before I sent it back. This week I tried a full backup on Monday and it worked, so I tried again last night and it failed. I guess I give up. Sadly, I have been a big supporter of ioSafe and I've told many people in my workplace about the brand. I will say..... I believe this was an anomaly and I am going to buy another 3TB drive to replace it. I can use the other device for short operations, but I have to admit..... I'm nervous that I won't be able to restore when needed. I know from personal experience working the computer biz for many years that intermittent problems are difficult to diagnose. But I am disappointed since it seems so easy for me to get it to fail on any number of machines, with any number of cables, and a variety of software performing operations on it. I have a hard time believing it got a good stress test when I sent it back for repair.

ALL that being said, the very first ioSafe device I bought several years ago still works great on my USB 2.0 ports. It's currently being used to backup my Linux computer. Also, I've gone through a couple of moves and the devices were not treated with kid gloves and the 4 that work continue to work. Knowing hard drives, ioSafe has still outperformed any other brand of backup hard drive I've ever used. So, while I wish I would not have had the one lemon, I am going to stick with them for a little longer.

Update: 11/12/2015 - after sending back the old unit that wasn't working well, and having some problems with delivery that were partially my fault and partially UPS (won't go into details), but NOT ioSafe's fault...... ioSafe shipped me a completely new unit! Best customer service ever.

This company really rocks. Any company can occasionally have an issue with a product. But one that makes it right no matter what, .... that is the one you want to do business with. And, their product has been top notch. I have several of these units now on a few different systems and they rock. I think my oldest unit is a USB 2.0 drive from about 3 years ago or so. It's still backing data up on my Linux machine.

So far so good

Received the product in some very protective packaging with no scratches or issues whatsoever. The drive is heavy and very durable. It feels built to withstand Armageddon. The enclosure is so strong you can literally stand on it. I did a lot of research online using review sites, trade magazines, and watching videos of people testing the destructibility of the ioSafe drives. I became very impressed by what I saw in the ability of this drive to take on fire and flooding while still keeping your data safe. The drive was ready to go right out of the box and backed up my entire drive over night. My only gripe with this drive is that it does not provide an ethernet connection or network capability. ioSafe also offered an extensive data recovery warranty of up to 5 years for an additional cost I found to be very reasonable. If you are serious about keeping your photos, videos, documents, and music protected from loss then ioSafe is a great solution.

A peace of mind!
by Haraldur (5 out of 5 stars)

I got my drive a while ago, my neighbors house caught on fire and they lost everything and shortly after I saw an article about ioSafe in a magazine. I love the look on the drive and its fire and water proof features. the indicator light is subtle but tells you that it's turned on and if it's processing data (unlike my old WD MyBook which lights up the whole room do you chose to have the status light on). The drive is silent and it feels like a sturdy and well built device. At least I now have my peace of mind and know that my backup is safe from fire, but let's hope that never happens though.

The Genie 9 backup software is easy to use and a good add-on to have with your drive cause it makes backup schedules so you always have an up to date backup at a safe place.

Couple of days after I received my drive I got an e-mail from the CEO of the company, asking me to take a short survey, which I did, but I never thought that the e-mail was in any way taken care of by the CEO. Shortly after I replied with the answers from the survey I got a personal reply from the CEO where he thanked me and answered some question I had about the device, moreover he told me they were a small business and I could reach out to them if I had any further question about the drive. Such proximity to customers gives you the feeling that this company is in this for the long run and cares about its products and customers, at that very moment I wanted to apply for a job at ioSafe.

My second IoSafe in many years
by xaeinstein (4 out of 5 stars)

Appears to be a solid all around drive.

I waited a while to review it.

I bought it to replace another IoSafe drive "local vault" I bought quite a number of years ago that has performed like a champ.

In fact the old one is still chugging away almost silently but also almost full to capacity. Which is the only reason I've bought a new one.

I've changed computers 3 times and the original drive is still my "local/on site" D/R copy.

The new version is more than twice as fast (partly because of USB3 but also the rotating speed of the drive itself) while also being twice as big (3.0TB instead of 1.5TB for the old one).

I use this drive only for my photographic images. I shoot a lot using DSLRs that generate the largest files for both personal as well as commercial assignments and portfolios.

My work flow (in case it helps) is as follows:
- I download the card(s) to the computer
- My editing s/w automatically copies the images once to the library (a locally Thunderbolt-attached separate RAID 10 16TB disk pair setup) and another copy once to this "fire proof" and "water proofed" device (please read specs for actual ratings basically so many degrees for so many hours and full immersion in so many feet of water for so many hours).
-After selecting the images I like, I edit them and they get copied to the same RAID 10 library disks. A selection of the edited images also gets uploaded to my website where they are again archived and backed up to the remote servers.

This drive contains a copy of all the originals locally.

My only reservation is that the old one (1.5TB) versus this 3.0TB newer model had a fan built-in that I found as close to silent as possible but this particular model does NOT include a fan. IoSafe has other models that do but not in this configuration/connection type. I wish they did. I use a Mac and this format works best for me.

Hence only 4 stars.

If past history is an indication, years from now, I will be looking for another drive when this one gets full.
(I should be so lucky!).

Sometimes, I yearn for the times when all you had to do was keep your negatives on a safe place (be it a shoe box or a bank vault) but that yearning only lasts a few seconds. I do NOT miss the hours spent in a physical darkroom. I can do so much more now in the comfort of my studio leaving me more time for the creative portion.

Would certainly recommend.

The first one I received did not work out of the box. After we discussed with customer service, it was recommended to return and replace. The second unit arrived and has been working since. It is a robust little box (of course since it has to stand up to extreme heat). My IT guys recommend this product to me and now only have high praise! It's the proverbial brick that sits there and does its job backing up our servers so that we can go about our business.

Dead after 2 years!

I purchased this item in August 2017 and I went to plug it in now August 2019 and it wont power up at all. It has been being used as only a back up drive that every 4-6 months I plug it in and transfer new pictures to it for a back up copy. I've maybe used it 6 times if that. Stay away

Company and Product a Winner!
by Treasure (5 out of 5 stars)

So far this hard drive has been running very smoothly. I have a MacBook pro and have no problems backing up. The hard drive is fairly heavy! I think it is super sturdy. I have to say that the CEO of the company contacted me personally to see how I liked my ioSafe purchase. That has never happened before and it tells me this company is really interested in customer satisfaction and building its products. Since I have only had this hard drive a few months I will be back to update it further.

Big, heavy, silent type
by Xman (5 out of 5 stars)
November 17, 2013

Works fine and is absolutely silent. My other ioSafe is quite loud and I only turn it on when I'm doing backups. I have this one attached to a server, receiving nightly backups, so I leave it on all the time. It's right next to my chair and I don't hear it. Seems to be running fine.

I reformatted it for Linux, which went fine once I found the right utility.

Beware that it is very bulky and heavy. I sure hope they are right about it being fireproof and waterproof, but I don't have a practical way to test that.

stopped working after 15 months-was fixed and failed again....fixed again
by Jonathan E. Schwartz (3 out of 5 stars)
May 31, 2014

It stopped working after 15 months....opened a support ticket with the company but never heard back from them.....too bad as it seems like a good item in concept...

The company contacted me after this negative review and were very helpful in resolving the problem including replacing the item. They even offered to cover an expensive data recovery plan but I didn't need it. The hard drive has been working perfectly since as my back up for time machine. The company was really great so I do recommend them.

Upate November 2015....i again had problems with this product. I sent it back to the company at my expense and was informed that the internal hard drive and PCBA had failed. They requested $200 to fix this. Given these two major failures in three years and the expense involved to fix it, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM! it is obviously not sturdy enough for just routine home use.

Update November 2015...after telling them to erase any data still remaining and destroy the hard disk as i didn't want to pay $200 for repair, they remembered that they had warranted the previous repair for 5 years and thus will be fixing it and sending it back to me for free......hopefully, it will last longer but they did extend the warranty...time will tell...

Incredible hard drive with the best feature out there - protection from life!
by TBoneTheOriginal (5 out of 5 stars)
December 6, 2014

This is my second ioSafe hard drive! They work incredibly well and seem to be faster than any other external drive I've ever purchased. We are using this as a connected drive to my company's Mac Mini Server so that the Macs in the building can use it for Time Machine backups. Packaging was excellent, seems incredibly durable (which it should considering it's waterproof and fireproof), and it looks attractive. Can't ask for much more!
