Nice small shovel

Nice small shovel. Very solid built, great quality of materials and workmanship. One note though: even though it is stainless steel, it is that stainless steel that can be hardened, not the soft one. And this sort of stainless steel can rust a bit, not as badly as regular steel does. Bottom line: keep it dry, just don't stick it into sheath while it is still wet. I didn't follow this precaution, and got a couple of rust spots. I would definitely recommend it, and will get the same as replacement if I loose mine.

Does everything you need it to, and more, if you're a bit odd.

Many who purchase a shovel like this are survivalists or preppers. I'm only a survivalist as much as it overlaps with being a backpacker and ourdoorsmans at heart. I purchased this because I was looking for a compact, well built camp shovel that was lighter than my cheap-o fold up camp shovel.

The first thing you'll notice about this shovel is that it's sharp. Dull knife blade sharp, in fact. It will cut and stab things with ease out of the box, and I'm told you can use it as an effective throwing weapon as well. I wouldn't doubt it, so if that kind of multipurpose use is your thing, go for it.

As for my own purposes, well... it digs well. It's very solidly made too; you won't find the handle rattling around on you while you're hiking or digging. The metal of the shovel itself is also pretty solid, especially when compared to my old shovel. It also has reinforced flanges for planting your foot on, if you need to. I've heard a few people say that it's pretty heavy, but I'd personally disagree. This is around four times lighter than my old shovel. You might notice it if you're an ultralight backpacker, but I don't much mind the extra weight.

Besides, if I get attacked by a bear, I can dig it to death with this thing, no problem.

Five stars, because it does everything I want it to do, and more, and can be had at fantastic sales if you catch it at the right time.

Almost perfect

For a small little shovel, this sure packs a big punch. It has pretty sharp edges to tear through the dirt, I live in New Mexico and this did a good job getting through the hard pack dirt and into the clay. The edges are sharp but if you're looking for something to do real chopping get an Estwing E24A hatchet which should be a must have in any prepper's bag. Same for the "saw" on the shovel as well, you're really not going to saw through anything. On the plus side this is a solid tool that far surpasses most other folding/mini shovels on the market. It isn't all that heavy so you could easily add it to your backpack for a camping/hiking trip. If you do any real off roading you should have this tool in the back of your Jeep or truck. Well worth the money if you can catch it on sale. I have no regrets from my purchase.

Tough As Nails

I used this to dig a trench around my tent prior to an all nite rainstorm. The soil was Missouri Ozark rock dirt..,,this shovel mowed right through it!

Well made strong shovel
by Brian C (4 out of 5 stars)

Well made, really strong and durable. Only issue is that the handle is a little short for any type of extended digging. If you are thinking that you can dig a fighting (fox) hole with this, better schedule a session with a chiropractor, your back will not appreciate it. But for light digging such as a Dakota fire hole, fire pits, chopping and even throwing, it is great. The sheath is well made but attachment to any external pack etc. would be an issue. It has two belt loops, where molle straps would have been a better use.

Small and Sturdy

Small, but that just makes it easier to store.

Bought this as an emergency shovel for my Jeep. With the size, it's more of an emergency spade.

It is solid and seems well made, and so does the case. With the size I can easily get under the Jeep to dig around a tire, and can store it almost anywhere. There are two loops on the back to make storage easier. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Not up to snuff

While it may be fine to keep in the car I purchased it for metal detecting. It is nearly impossible to dig through soft pencil lead size roots without tons of effort. I attempted to trench my pup tent and found it fruitless as well. It does have a sharp blade and I suppose to be tactical you could always throw it at something. It may have other uses but for metal detecting forget it.

feel thr power! In a small device

Designed to be cool while really useful, my first impressions is it is not going to get a whole lot of normal dirt in a small amount of time. This thing is hardcore, made for tougher situations. the only thing I can think this thing could not do in a survival situation is crush big rocks (not sure why I am thinking about that. It does not have enough metal to create trauma in a rock. Though I could be wrong, it just would probably would be the worst way to use this device. heck, use the bottom of the handle to use in a motor and pestle. In other words... THIS THING IS FREAKIN AWESOME! Just do me a favor, and dont give this to a child. With great power comes great responsibility.

Super tough, well made utility shovel!

Much tougher than anticipated! This is my first United Cutlery item, and it certainly won't be my last. Backpacked with this hanging off my pack for three weeks, with it's great little blade guard. This thing lasts - it is durable, and not the cheap stuff you get elsewhere. If I had not traded this to a local guide, I am sure I would have had it for years.

Sold by Ultimate Paintball?
by JTEmilio (5 out of 5 stars)

Nice product. Surprisingly sturdy and well made. I bought it for my wilderness gear. I do wish the belt loops on the sheath weren't perpendicular to the shaft. I would've preferred an angle, but that's just my preference. I can probably rig it to do what I want. The loops are fairly big.

I got a request to review the product, and realized who sold me the product - "Ultimate Paintball". Not that this is a bad thing, I just thought it was hilarious. The hell kind of paintball ya'll playing?
