NOT as fast as advertised
by Amazon Customer (3 out of 5 stars)

I bought this for obvious reasons and am disappointed at the speed (or I should say "lack of speed".

It was shown in the papers that came with it and possibly advertised on this site that it would fully charge the Goal Zero Switch 10 in 4 hours of direct sunlight. That is BS! I sat it in a chair on my patio in direct sunlight hooked to the Switch 10 for about 6 hours and it was about HALF charged. It also indicated it would charge a Smart Phone in 4 hours. I hooked it to my Samsung Galaxy Ace Style phone at about 18% charge for 4 hours and when I checked on it my phone had actually DROPPED to 4%. I only gave it 3 stars because it actually WILL charge the Switch 10 but on hiking conditions in and out of sun on the back or top of a back pack in the forest would probably take about 3 days. I will NOT recommend this Solar Panel to ANYONE!

Goal Achieved

I just got home from a month of remote travel, with VERY high praise for the new 11800 Nomad V2.

I exclusively used it to charge our GPS, cellphones, digital cameras, and Kindle Paperwhite.

It packs down safely very fast, and deploys effortlessly in any scenario.

A big ziploc bag allowed charging sensitive items literally out in the rain;

While some days i hiked wearing my Nomad across my back, etc.

It took a beating, worked flawlessly, and simply never disappointed.

OK But there are betters for less

Two stars for durable design and convenient size. When I tested it under ideal conditions the panel generated no more than 3.5W, half of the claimed generating capacity. Exchanged for a cheaper, larger capacity panel with actual output closer to 15W.

Great backpacking gear!
by str8moben (5 out of 5 stars)
May 11, 2014

This panel works great, i've charged two different battery backups (12,000 mah and 5,000 mah), a Galaxy Note 2, and Beats Studio wireless headphones. Overall the devices charge quickly (not as quick as the wall obviously) but the charge was sufficient for the additional power boost needed while backpacking.

Typically i'd charge my two battery backups and that would get me through 2 - 2.5 days of charging on my cell phone. The Note 2 having a 3100mah battery really ate through the backups. I typically use my phone for GPS tracking (My Tracks) and picture taking while hiking. If I use it for a movie and/or music for the kids at camp, then it leans towards 2 days of use. For any additional usage, like emergency calls etc, I have a wind up flashlight w/ a DC out, that I use in conjunction w/ a DC to USB converter. For trips with my buddies I have a larger lantern that also has a wind up generator that also charges. The wind up generators charge about 1-2% of my cell phone per minute of winding...which gets very annoying after about 5 minutes!

The Nomad 7 panel allows me to extend my backpacking past those 2 days and means I do not have to worry about using the phone for other things like reading at night after the kids go to bed. The panel means I can charge while I hike and not have to worry about winding my lantern for hours at a time while hiking!

The Nomad 7 does not completely fill my 12,000 mah backup with an entire day worth of charging, but does provide sufficient charge to refill my phone from about 10-15% to 100% over night.

Size wise, as previously noted, opened is about the size of a regular 8.5x11 sheet of paper. There are ample hooks to tie in another Nomad 7 panel. This version does have the ability to tie into another panel. The connections are, Nomad panel input, Nomad panel output (it's a small connection, less than a 3.5mm connector), a proprietary connection that you can use to connect to other Goal Zero products (like battery backup) or a DC (read car outlet/cigarette lighter) connection (the DC connection is included), and finally a female USB connection.

The included storage bag on the back of the panel is handy, it allows me to stow my USB cables (mini to charge my backups, micro to charge my phone direct from the panel or the backup), and both of my backups. But little more storage area than that.

Overall the panel has worked flawlessly in full sun and partial sun. I have no regrets with this panel. I would have like to try a couple other panels, but this was the one I settled on and i'm completely satisfied with this panel for backpacking due to the low profile, low weight, and great charging.

So awesome I bought it twice
by Ghostly Pat (5 out of 5 stars)

This solar panel is the real deal.

You can get them for cheaper, but not the same quality. Goal Zero is the Cadillac of solar power. In that you pay the extra money to have something that'll never let you down.

The reason I bought it twice is that I accidentally left it in my car when I sold it... That person must be pleasantly surprised when they went through the car. I hope they at least give them a good review.

This is not the solar panel that will power your entire house... But it'll get you some extra bars on your cellphone. Which is the basics of what you need.

Great Product

I ordered this panel with the led stick light and the battery pack. I have had so much fun with this. It was

easy to set up, As soon as I help the solar panel in the sun with the stick like plugged into it the light came on.

I charged the battery pack about 3 hours in the sun and the LED light came on while plugged into the batteries.

I am looking forward to seeing how well this performs in the winter light but I am very delighted so far with the

ease of use and the performance.

Awesome Product!!!

I'll soon be packrafting in Alaska and wanted something to charge my iPhone 5 and my Fuji XP70 digital camera. In the attached photo I have the panels hooked up to a battery charger for my camera battery. The charger is connected using the car charging port that comes with the Nomad 7. It's charging the battery in direct sunlight. I'm not sure how long it will take as the battery was dead. I tried charging my iPhone 5 and it would not work. I purchased the Guide 10 Plus to charge with the panel so I could charge my phone and other devices.

When I purchased the panels the first time they arrived scratched and the box was damaged. Perhaps it was returned and sold as new again. Amazon sent me another one. Then I had an issue with the batteries not holding a charge in the Guide 10 Plus. Contacted Goal Zero because the batteries had been manufactured in 3/2013 as printed on the battery. However, I did not purchase them until 3/2015. If the batteries are not used within the first year they could become weaker or not hold a charge. Even though I bought the Guide 10 elsewhere Goal Zero replaced the batteries for me. I provided proof of purchase, photo's of the batteries and number of times they were used prior to submitting the claim.

I've talked directly with Goal Zero on a number of occasions in researching what would be best to use on this trip. They're customer service and knowledge is great. I also became a certified expert to sell their products at the outdoor store I work at part time. I really believe in the quality of the product. Plus they're working hard to reach communities who are in need of lighting, including third world countries. I highly recommend checking out their website!

Useful off the grid for backpacking

Charges my smart phone, but takes a while, and is sensitive to orientation to the sun, but for portability and variety of applications, it's a good thing to have on your pack.

Outdoor Wedding Photographer - This is a necessary accessory
by Todd Wagner (K7MAT) (5 out of 5 stars)
December 9, 2013

As a professional wedding photographer, many times I am working in an outdoor venue, where access to electrical power is non-existent. Despite having extra battery packs with me, a convenience I have found with the Goal Zero Nomad Solar Panel is recharging AA batteries immediately when they become depleted. The panel connects easily to the side of my camera bag, and within a couple hours I have fully recharged batteries. I also like how the panel folds down and slips into the side of my camera bag for portability.

Great for work and camping
by bigEC (5 out of 5 stars)

I love this device and use it daily. I keep it in my laptop bag and get it out every time I get in the car. It throws off some free power to my cell phone while commuting. I also do a good bit of backpacking, and I bring this along due to a severe case of device addiction. I plug it into a Poweradd Apollo 7200 solar charging battery pack, which you can pick up cheaply. The two combined will keep a number of cell phones running plus small tablets. I think my total investment was $50 in the two. When visiting clients, I bring the battery pack as my cell phone runs out inopportunely.

This panel is small and light. Thin as well, except for the connector section on one panel. I really like this item.
