Unparalleled Visibility
by Evan (5 out of 5 stars)

I gave Revolights 5 stars because they provide unparalleled visibility on dark streets, and if you are using them for basic commuting, they will light your way too.

These lights are really best for urban and suburban commuters. If you are going for speed, they are probably not for you due to the projected light distance and the extra rolling resistance on your wheels. If you commute on very dark roads, you may also want an additional front light so that you can see further in front of you. For the typical commuter though, I can't imagine a better set of lights.

In my test ride video, you can see that the lights are extremely visible from any angle. From the rear, they even appear brighter than my rear light, Portland Design Works Danger Zone Tail Light
, due to the fact that, as they rotate, a pair of LEDs will be angled up to be perfectly directed at drivers' eyes.

As you can see in the video, the front facing Revolights are not as bright as my 700 lumen head light, NiteRider Lumina 700 Cordless Light
, but they are comparable to a typical front light. If you don't need to see really far ahead of you, these lights will more than do the trick on their own to light your way. The front lights seem comparable to headlights I've used in the past, similar to something like this: Planet Bike Beamer 3 LED Bicycle Light with Quick Cam Bracket Mount
. Since I ride a hilly, curvy and unlit road on my commute, I will be keeping my Lumina 700 as well.

People have sighted the installation as being a little complicated, which is true. However, I feel like the installation would be easier with a little better directions. Once you figure out the first wheel, the second one is a snap.

Hope this is helpful, but if it's not, please shoot my a question and I will get back to you.

Just great!!

On The Lights:

These light the road so well! They give a lot of visibility to me commuting in the city (San Francisco) and they give drivers and others a lot of visibility of me. I didn't have any issues taking my wheel off or putting it on after these were installed and no issues with locking up my bike with them either. The quality is great and they don't feel like they'll break or fall off.

On the Install:

I installed them myself following the videos that Revolight made available. The install took a while, but overall wasn't hard. They are super secure on my wheels and I don't fear that it will come off. I recommend watching the install video and having the install guide next to you too. The videos were super helpful. The only area I struggled with was getting the magnet to register correctly for the back wheel. After playing with it for a bit I got it figured out, but the Revolights team was available if I had decided to call for help.

On Customer Service:

When I had questions or needed to swap out a single defective part the guys sent out exactly what I needed and a little more to ensure that all my needs were taken care of. They packaged everything well and I couldn't be happier.

Overall, this was a great purchase.

Time-consuming to Install but OMG is it worth it!

After seeing this on Shark Tank I was very excited to get some for my bike. I ordered it online and after doing so I was quickly alerted by the manufacturer to check the size of my tires to ensure that I got the correct size. It arrived on time. The only negative thing I can say is that it took me 5+ hours to install this. It is evident that this was created by a smart engineer. There were so many parts. I read and reread the directions and watched all the instructional videos to help me. When I was done it was a thing of beauty. Such great quality and design. Everyone stops me and asks me about the lights. This product is one of the best purchases I have ever made. It was money and time well spent!

AWESOME. well worth it

Overall the best/funnest product I have for my Bikes. This was gifted to me by my wife. Didn't fit the bike I wanted to place it on initially due to rims being deep V >40mm. Got a new bike with appropriate size wheels and could not be happier. Head turner. Good visibility from the sides and ok lighting forward. The lights/wheel is sturdier than I thought prior to install. Overall took me about 50-60 mins for the first wheel to be installed. 30 mins for the second. It was not as hard as other might say. Overall very happy with them as I do a lot of night rides.

Wonderful Product; Wonderful Support

I ordered Revolights as a present for my boyfriend. He has been excited about them since they first appeared on Kickstarter, and the reality far exceeded our expectations. After I ordered Revolights, I received prompt and regular emails from the company letting me know when to expect the lights, and encouraging me to call with any questions. Once the Revolights arrived, I did call with questions, and since we live in the Bay Area, they offered that we could come to Emeryville, and they would install the lights for us - we took them up on the offer. We really appreciated that they went the extra mile to make sure everything was right and that we were happy with the product. Meanwhile, my boyfriend has been loving his Revolights (including showing them off to our jealous friends and neighbors), and says he has had his best night rides yet. Plus, it makes me feel better knowing that his path is well lit, and it is easy for cars to see him, when he bikes home late at night. I could not recommend this product more highly.

I have had my lights for a few months now and am absolutely satisfied with them! So far, i have had lots of compliments and onlookers everywhere i go. They live up to what you would expect from them and more! One suggestion is to do like they ask you before purchasing them and make sure that your bike meets all the requirements that are involved. Couldn't say enough about this product and they were delivered on time and unharmed.

Revolights just make sense.

Obviously, the most important factors in bicycling safety are proper education and awareness on the part of *both* bicyclists *and* drivers.

However, if a driver cannot see a cyclist, they can't properly treat them with the respect they are given by both law and common courtesy. Given the grim statistics about cyclist casualties [...]most people are won't to just disregard cycling as a viable means of transportation. Even savvy cyclists (cyclingsavvy.org) who know how to drive as responsible members of traffic are unable to completely control the attention of motorists, *especially* in the dawn, dusk and night hours. Laws requiring reflectors and front and rear bike lights are not widely standardized (how many lumens must lights be/range of identification/angle of focus/etc.) so many cyclists are lured into equipping their rides with "the best bang for the buck." These headlights and taillights shine, respectively, ahead of (fore) and behind (aft) the cyclist's path.

But what of the sides of the bike. A beam of light focused fore and aft of a bicycle cannot be seen by motorists *not* fore or aft of said bicycle.

The solution: Revolights.

Not only do these buggers fulfill the fore and aft light requirements, but they UNDENIABLY increase a cyclist's "non-path" visibility. Because I decided I wanted to often commute to work early in the morning, I conceded the need to get some lights for my 10-year-old Trek. AND because I got an Amazon Prime membership (*free shipping*) I looked up lights here on Amazon.

So. Many. Choices.

So I clicked on viewing them in order of cost "highest-to-lowest" and low and behold: Revolights!

These things look like props from one of the Tron movies (...not to be confused with the movie Troy, although chariots with these things would be totally B.A....). So I decided to plop down a couple hundred bucks on a set. I mean, why pay $100 (each!) for a headlight and taillight that can be seen 5 miles away, but not from the side?

Upon receiving the lights I couldn't wait to install them (you *can* buy rims with them pre-installed for a "little" more :-P), so I took them over to my girlfriends place. She owns BeFly Bike Tours and has tons of space, plus she wanted to help. After about 2 hours of installation we got them on properly. I'll be honest, it is kinda complicated, but I'm pretty handy and if you like putting together big Lego sets this'll be no problem.

After installing them I went for a test ride. They didn't work exactly right, so I re-read where to put the magnets and got them placed properly: Bam! They worked. Mostly. Apparently, after talking with Danny from Revolights on the phone, we realized I had two LEDs "mis-firing" on my rear drive side ring. So Danny sent me another one.

Easy Peasy.

Now: I'm visible 360°. *Everybody* points and stares. "Awesome Bike!" "Cool Lights!" "Where'd you get THOSE?!"

So, at the end of the day... or the very beginning!... or hours and hours of darkness!!!... Revolights just make sense.

Best of luck to you and your company,

Virgil Bates III

Impressive, but beware of installation!

I got this set as a present from 2 of my adult children. Just saw the price on Amazon and was impressed they'd spend so much money on a present for their bike-commuting old man's 65th. I am a PhD mechanical engineer and rather handy with all things mechanical, electrical, and construction-related. But installing this system took me the better part of a day and arthritis in my hands flared up with a vengeance by the end of it. There are so many parts, so many things that can be done wrong, that you almost have to assume you're going to have to undo some work. Next time I'll offer to pay for the "materials" if they do the installation...

A secondary problem I just found is that wheels that need to be trued because of heavy commuting (I do 15 miles every day) require much of the Revolight system to be de-installed. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to adjust spokes with the light rings in place. However, as often is the case with complicated systems, rebuilding it the second time is a lot faster than doing it the first time around.

Finally, the proper placement of the magnets is rather tricky. My rear light arc refuses to shine in place and rotates with the wheel instead, but then again that's not a bad option, either.

All that being said, and with due caveats expressed, the final product is definitely cool, as well as an unquestionable safety godsend. Not an evening or night commute passes when I won't get called out to by pedestrians, joshed by fellow bikers, even stopped by motorists who pass me, park their cars, then call for me through open windows. If I were 40 years younger I'd use the system's unexpected side-benefit as a chick magnet, several attractive specimens thereof having stopped me on the open street wanting to find out all about my wheels...

In conclusion -- 5 stars to the product, 3 stars or less for the daunting installation and difficult text in the manual. If you are an early adopter and don't mind dedicating many hours to a confusing job, go for it, the final result is definitely worthwhile!

Later entry, after about 4 months of ownership:

One of the two batteries became weak (not holding the charge for more than a few days) and one of the rear lights did not synch with wheel rotation. finally it stopped working altogether. A call on the support line was answered by email shortly thereafter, inviting me to stop by at their place which is in a nearby town. I did so and met the whole gang, a number of very smart mech engineers with graduate degrees from head-turning universities. They were exceedingly nice and, even though the dead wheel light was due to a frayed wire which I must have caused when parking the bike carelessly, they replaced both rear lights, the battery, and gave me an extra battery as a spare. Plus, they did all the work promptly while I waited. I have no doubt that, if I had lived further away, they would have diagnosed the issue with me and sent replacement product promptly.

I left taking a bunch of their business cards as I continue to be stopped and called out to nightly over these ultra-bling lights.
