Great product: Size/power/blanket info in this review

I bought this on a whim because Bitcoin was high and I suddenly was rich. Probably my favorite thing to have bought in that state of mind.

I'm gonna explain everything about this kotatsu in this review.

I got free shipping via Amazon, and then the Japanese company that sells this said it would arrive in three weeks or so. Then, it arrived in six days. Looking through the other reviews, this is pretty common so props to this company for going above and beyond.

The size is about three feet by three feet, and about one and a half feet tall. Of course, you need about five feet by five feet of space to put it in so that people can sit around it.

There are things you need to buy with this.

One is a power step up converter, as this kotatsu comes with a Japanese cord on the end of it, and is set up for 220 power. Here in the USA we use 110. (Some people don't know). I only got a 500 watt converter. Keep in mind that you need both the physical converter and the power converter, so make sure whatever you get has both.

You don't need a specialized kotatsu blanket to go with this. Since I got my kotatsu table so early before the other stuff arrived, I ended up just throwing a few blankets I already had onto it. It worked fine. Maybe not pretty, but all you'd need is a king sized blanket to work with this, and that can look nice if you wanted it to. Anyway, you don't need to spend 120 dollars or whatever for the kotatsu blanket.

The last thing you absolutely need with this is either a carpet or something soft to sit on. You sit directly on the floor, and I have wood floors, so i ended up putting camping mats underneath it. The Japanese are more cultrually used to that than us Americans. Just be aware of this.

As for the actual functionality of the kotatsu, everything is in Japanese. The instructions are easy to figure out with just the pictures and I had it all assembled in 15 minutes (they even give you a screwdriver so I didn't have to look for one).

To turn the unit on, there's an on and off switch on the cord. Its in Japanese, but the side of the switch with the 1 etched into the plastic on it is the on side (something that took me almost a month to find, seriously just found it while trying to write this review).

Looking at the other reviews, other people also miss the dial heat control on the inside underneath the table.

Lastly, watch out for falling asleep under this thing. Its not dangerous, but there have been about seven times where I sat down with my laptop trying to do homework and I woke up four hours later.

Happiness is a Warm Kotatsu
by Peachie Kiki (5 out of 5 stars)

[UPDATE: Years later, it still works! I also found out years later that there is a dial under the table on the edge of the heater that can control how warm the table gets.]

I lived in Japan for awhile and had a Kotatsu, but had to leave it there due to not being able to ship it home.

A year later, living in the frozen Tundra of the Midwest made me decide it was time for being cozy, warm, and lazy yet somehow more productive again.

The table is quite sturdy, comfortably fits 3 people under it, even has a reversible tabletop (One side is dark gray/tar-colored, the other is light gray/slate) and everything can collapse into each other (ex. When you transition from Winter to Summer, the heater wire can be fit into the table) As for the heater, it's so lovely~ I only have two gripes -- the first being that I wish that it had more options besides On/Off, but I can live with that. (And if I want more options, I can always buy another heater) The second gripe I have is I wish there were better (read: more less crazily priced) options for Kotatsu Futons. I ended up sewing one up myself (which is what is depicted in the picture)

If you decide to get this, don't forget to buy a transformer, don't forget to get cushions, and try not to fall asleep under this table.

Once the Kotatsu has you in it's warm embrace, it takes Herculean Effort to escape its warm bear hug-like embrace.

So comfy, you will never leave

The item arrived much quicker than expected (like, a whole month before when it was estimated to arrive. My glee has not yet subsided). The product itself is fairly light, and it's super easy to assemble. You don't need any tools to get it working. It's a bit shorter than the standard coffee table, so if you were trying to double up its use (like I was) this is your heads up.

Assembly took maybe ten minutes, tops, and despite being in Japanese, it's very easy to understand what to do. Please be advised that you do need a power converter to change this from Japanese 100V to USA 120V if you're using it in the states. It's about 300W power, so you'll want a converter rated at ~1000W to be on the safe side. Additional: The converter I bought is: VCT VT-1000J - Japanese Step Up/Down Voltage Transformer Converts Japan 100 Volts To 120Volts OR Vice Versa -1000 Watt and I of course keep it turned off if I'm not using the kotatsu.

As for the comfort/etc. It's all plastic, but the top looks really nice and feels like a high quality surface. Size wise, it should fit four average sized people under it comfortably, but I've now crammed six people under it without problem (other than tangled limbs, but it was still quite cozy). I would definitely say it's worth the price. The heater has a felt cage so you don't burn yourself, and there's an adjustable temperature knob. I'm using just a comforter for my futon/blanket piece, and it works really well. Be forewarned: once you have entered the warmth of the kotatsu, there is no escape. You will be trapped forever. FOREVER.

GET IT. You don't even have to read the reviews here. Just buy it now...

Wonderful...absolutely wonderful. Such a simplistic idea that really lives up to the hype. The table and converter ARE ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE COST. I originally purchased this as a Christmas gift for my brother, but this quickly became the go-to spot in our house. Since it can get very cold where I live during the winter, this table sort of became a lifesaver (I use the term loosely). The table was a quick set-up (<5 minutes to connect the power converter, install the legs of the table, grab a large/comfy blanket and turn on to heat up!), sturdy and easy to clean. Perfect for napping, doing homework, watching TV, playing games on or just wanting to stay warm. My only initial reservation about the product was it's size, but this quikcly became a non-factor. Although it can probably fit 3 adults comfortably and 4 if you sit cross-legged, we were able to fit 6 with our legs sprawled on one another (assuming you're okay being that close). The adjustable heat knob and the protective heat cage are excellent features. And don't worry about purchasing an expensive kotatsu blanket online; any large (queen-size) comfy blanket will do (that should help offset the costs of the converter).

The best part was how quick this company was able to get this product to me. While the converter is a quick-buy, I thought it would take 1-2 months for the table to get to me since it's from Japan and that's how long it took other large, international products I've purchased in the past. I was frustrated since I wanted it before Christmas to present to my brother. So when I ordered it on 12/10, the estimated TOA was late January/early February. I was ecstatic and pleasantly surprised when it arrived only 10 days later (12/21/16), right before Christmas!!!

To summarize it all, ridiculously quick delivery, easy assembly, safe, heavenly warmth, and crowd pleaser.

Great Table
by SD (5 out of 5 stars)

After using this for a couple of months, I can now positively tell you that this is one of my favorite purchases EVER. I use it nearly everyday. It's the perfect height for floor sitting, and it has a fairly decent size table top. It's heavy duty plastic, and the felt cage around the heating element has saved my legs more than once. The heat is adjustable (I typically keep it set on low). With the added converter for use in the states, the cord is very long. I love that I can flip the table top between black and white depending on the room. Warning : if you buy this, prepare to be addicted/not leave it for long periods of time.

Best Table Ever?
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

In love with this table. It makes getting up in the morning easier. It is said that you shouldn't sleep under it but we do (minus the heat). I'm 5 feet so I can fit under it and sleep comfy. Mostly because I am lazy about moving it - but I always turn the power and heat off. It just adds an extra layer for me and my daughter to keep us cozy. We set ours on the futon and that gives us plenty of extra cushion.

it is big enough for serving dinner on if you are a small family. It replaced our Norden Gateleg Ikea table, lol, which sits alone and compacted away in the corner because we all want to be under this. Definitely invest in the floor chairs with the back support though, if you know you slouch a lot, cause this table can hurt you have poor posture.

I love it!

I love it!! I stay nice and cozy almond with my cat who enjoys crawling under as well. Some of the legs were loose in the box though,so the delivery guy left a sticky note saying he was afraid something was broken but everything came in perfect condition! I got a nice green queen size comforter since that works just as well asking with a floor chair with an adjustable back. Make sure to get the step up down converter as well! I was so glad to have everyone else's insight and knowledge on the reviews prior to buying all the stuff for my own kotatsu.

YOU NEED THIS IN YOUR LIFE.

Easy to assemble and operate! And the top half of the table is reversable so you have a choice between black and light grey. The table is a good size because I can cross my legs underneath and not hit my knees on the table legs. I'm so crazy cozy right now. I'm just gonna hibernate under this Kotatsu all winter. You will love this table!

As a side note: I bought the comforter from Linenspa on Amazon (Full size)(Super comfy!!)

And I bought the US/JP power converter on Amazon as well (it can change the power both ways: US 120v to JP 100v and JP 100v to US 120v). No issues so far!

lot of work to have this back in my life but not many other options
by Rotkappchen31 (4 out of 5 stars)

So far, so good but took a lot of work to get this thing going.

To use in the US, this needed a transformer (VCT VT-2000J - Japanese Step Up/Down Voltage Transformer Converts Japan 100 Volts To 110V OR Vice Versa - 2000 Watt https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004O9WIK8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and adapter (Franzus Travel Lite Adapter Plug Two Thin Blades White by Conair https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AHFYEN2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which fits in the transformer plug a bit loosely but is not in any danger of falling out either, just that it stacks the adapter then the long plug which creates weight so the more snug fit the better to keep it from sagging. Overall everything seems to work. The blanket-and-mat-set prices everywhere are just ridiculous --- same or more than the kotatsu itself --- so I bought a cheap square queen comforter which fits perfectly and a queen quilt to use as a mat.

The heat is adjustable using the long stick-knob on the heater unit near the plug under the table. The knob shows in some of the photos of the heater unit but not readily identified as the heat adjuster. However, this is almost exactly the same style as the one I had in Japan so I recognized it for what it was and went ahead and ordered it (no way am I buying a heater without some kind of temperature adjustment). Since I am the primary user and sit in the seat in front the knob, it's not worth paying a lot more for the type of kotatsu heater with a digital temp adjuster/on-off switch directly on the cord.

My main complaint is that the table corner stops that should help grip the futon and keep the table top from floating around are not high/deep enough to actually work. Still, the table top is on the heavy side so I don't have any problems with it moving around and just grip the legs when I need to move the table.
