Nest thermostat vs. this Honeywell thermostat

I'm giving a head-to-head review. I've had both a Nest 3rd Generation thermostat and this Honeywell touchscreen thermostat. I like both a lot, actually. It depends on what you're looking for in terms of deciding which is better for you specifically.

I love the simplicity of the Honeywell's touchscreen. And I like that it tells you the outside temps and humidity, the date, and time all on the home-screen, all at once. Nests have much less info on the screen and you need to turn the dial and find everything, like weather, etc. On the Honeywell, to navigate to settings and schedules, there are touchscreen tabs at the top of the screen. Pretty intuitive.

Wiring:

The Honeywell absolutely requires a "C" wire to work. If you don't have one, you will need to run one for the Honeywell for it to work. I originally did not have one, but I had one added for $100 by an electrician. If you don't want to go through the expense or hassle, you may want to go for the Nest instead, because while the system works best with a C wire, it can work without one. But it depends on how much power it can pull from the other wires. Not having a C wire can make its Wi-Fi connectivity spotty/intermittent. And that means sometimes you can't interact with it via the mobile App and delays in it knowing what the external weather is.

Apps:

Nest has its merits, for sure, like their App that gives a lot of insights as to how you're doing with efficiency (like showing that for the past week, Monday, the heater only ran for 15 minutes; and Tuesday, it didn't come on at all... that kind of thing). I will say, however, Honeywell and Nest keep improving their Apps continuously, so as soon as I comment on App features, they change and have new functions... so that's a positive for both products. Who can be upset with constant improvements?

Aesthetics:

Both the Honeywell and Nest are very slick/modern looking. With this Honeywell, having the ability to choose your screen color to work with your décor or style is something that's pretty neat. Or you can change it up when you're bored. The Nest, however, does not have a function to change its color. It is always black. On the other hand, the Nest itself with its circular face is just pretty cool looking on its own. I'll leave you to decide what is more pleasing, as it's a matter of opinion.

Some notes about programming your schedule:

Nests, are all about "learning" about you. So, in default/factory setting mode they are set in "auto" schedule program mode, which means you go about your daily routines and "train" it, so it learns your preferred home temps and schedule. If you're letting it "learn you", it goes something like this... You to wake up, change the temp, leave the house and adjust the temp before doing so, come home and ... You get where I'm going. Finally, after a few days of that, it pretty much understands your patterns (unless you're really unpredictable/erratic). That learning feature can be awesome for some, since some folks want to let it do the work. But some people are more control freaks (like myself) and want to tell it what temps at what times to come on and off from the get-go. So, if you find the learning feature takes too long to learn your schedule, simply read the directions and turn off the auto learn function, and then program your schedule to however you want. The Honeywell does not learn and has you set your desired temps and schedule from the first moment you install it by default. But it gives you quick-set recommendations, which make setting up the schedule super-fast.

Bottom line:

Both are absolutely great thermostats. I love them both for different reasons. Maybe the biggest difference for some would be the "C" wire requirement for Honeywell (if you don't have a C wire in your wall already and if you don't want to have to have that wire added).

worked for 6 months, died, honeywell refused to replace, warranty not honored

I researched the thermostats to death. I had no reason to replace the old Honeywell thermostat that came with my house. It looks like it is the original thermostat that came with the house when it was built 30 years ago. So in my research I considered the Nest thermostat (and I really wanted to get it), but I settled on the Honeywell mostly because I wanted the option to set my own schedules rather than have the device "learn" what I like.

I purchased the Honeywell 9580 in June 2015. I promptly installed it on my wall when it arrived to replace the original Honeywell unit that came with my house. We added the device to our wifi network. My SO and I then downloaded the "Honeywell Total Connect Comfort" mobile app, configured the account, and created our schedules from the app. At this point there was no reason for us to ever touch the thermostat on the wall again.

In fact, we didn't touch the thermostat after we had the mobile app working. We enjoyed the ability to adjust the temperature, power state, and schedule of our fancy thermostat from anywhere. Hell, we even turned it off and on from the airport when we were going on or returning from trips! It's wonderful to come home to a sufficiently cooled/warmed house!

Then the problem arose.

One morning (Jan 2, 2016) I came downstairs to find the the color scheme had changed on my unit. I had asked my SO if she had changed it, but she said she hadn't. I tapped the screen to change it back to the color scheme that we prefer. To my surprise, it changed back to our color scheme immediately when I tapped the screen. Odd? I went about my day.

Later the same day I received an alert from the "Honeywell Total Connect Comfort" app stating that my Honeywell device was no longer connected to the internet. Wow! I'm impressed! Great feature indeed! So I wander over to my thermostat and discovered that the screen was black. Very odd. I tapped the screen - nothing happened. I tap the screen again - still nothing happened.

So then I called Honeywell Support. They had me pull the thermostat off the wall and check the circuit breaker and also check to see if there is power across a couple wires. The circuit breaker was fine. There was no power across the lines. Honeywell Support then told me to contact HVAC to find out what's wrong with my furnace.

I contacted a local contractor service which came out the following day. They "jumped" my thermostat, installed my old thermostat back on the wall, and told me that one of the transistor caps is damaged on the fancy Honeywell 9580. Sure enough, it fell out just flipping the thermostat over.

We called Honeywell Support again to report that the device is still not working after HVAC checked it out and that one of the transistors is now "broken". Honeywell Support essentially blamed us for the physical damage and explained that they would not honor their warranty as a result. We explained that the thermostat worked perfectly for the 6 months that it had been on the wall and the only reason it was off the wall was because it STOPPED WORKING and a HONEYWELL SUPPORT REP instructed us to take it off the wall. So how does it get damaged sitting on a wall for 6 months? Honeywell provided us with the email address of a "manager" named Paul Arntzen (case # 00168634) and instructed us to take pictures of the device and email that "manager." We emailed Paul on January 4th. We received no response. We emailed him again on January 8th. As of today (January 16th, 2016), we still have not received any response.

IN SHORT

The device worked perfectly for 6 months and we did love how it worked. However, due the to crappy support from Honeywell, we will not be purchasing Honeywell products anymore.

EDIT

We eventually did get it replaced for free, but it took at least a dozen emails and several phone calls. YMMV. The way that we got results was that we used the "feedback" option on Honeywell's website. Someone got in touch with us, provided us with an email address of a manager and asked us to send pictures of the device and details of our story. We did. Someone responded and asked for our address. Shortly thereafter a brand new device arrived at our door. We put the new device into operation and it has worked without issue thus far. We kept the original Honeywell thermostat (30 years old and non-digital) just in case we get a repeat issue. I ended up selling the old broken thermostat on eBay for a decent amount of money - the person who bought it apparently fixed it and he is happy with it. Changed from 1 star to 3. I can't in good conscience give this a 5 star rating due to the customer service.

My former wife loves to take expensive vacations. We live in Ohio, which doesn't exactly have extravagant places to see unless you like to watch grass growing or interstate construction. While we make OK money, I'm convinced she felt the need to single handedly improve the US economy by taking elaborate vacations: Broadway shows in New York City, gambling in Las Vegas, Spa's in Arizona, sightseeing in San Francisco. The airlines know me so well they ask about my dog when I call to make reservations. His name is Fred.

In my attempt to try and save whatever I could so the princess could have her nice things I bought this Honeywell Wi-Fi enabled device so I could adjust the HVAC while we were away piling up massive amounts of debt on Mickey Mouse watches. I thought we could save a few bucks by keeping the temp cool in the winter and warm in the summer. The device was easy to install. I did not have the "blue" connector so I had to re-purpose the green one - this required an adjustment to the actual HVAC unit in our home. There are plenty of videos on Youtube to demonstrate how to do this. Within an hour I was up and running.

The device works flawlessly. You can adjust the temp from anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or cellular signal. Little did I know that my ex had found someone that had a bit more money than I did and decided to make other travel plans. Those plans included her no longer being my wife and finding a new travel partner (Carl, a banker). She took the house, the dog and a good chunk of my 401k, but didn't mess with the wireless access point or the Wi-Fi enabled Honeywell thermostat.

Since this past Ohio winter has been so cold I've been messing with the temp while the new love birds are sleeping. Doesn't everyone want to wake up at 7 AM to a 40 degree house? When they are away on their weekend getaways, I crank the heat up to 80 degrees and back down to 40 before they arrive home. I can only imagine what their electricity bills might be. It makes me smile. I know this won't last forever, but I can't help but smile every time I log in and see that it still works. I also can't wait for warmer weather when I can crank the heat up to 80 degrees while the love birds are sleeping. After all, who doesn't want to wake up to an 80 degree home in the middle of June?

Bad Units !!!!!!!!!!

I am an HVAC contractor and I can only tell you that these units are junk. They only last a little over one year before they start short cycling the furnace. Being that this is the retail model it only carries a one year warranty. All the units I have installed are crapping the bed shortly one year after installation. If you want the five year warranty you better purchase from a distributor. No one will help in this matter as they pretty much shut the door in our faces. DO NOT BUY !!!!!!!!!

The only one worth getting

I've bought three of these now with zero issues. I love how they give you so much control of the display, both with brightness, and the color. And when I say control of the color I mean complete control. They have preset themes, but they allow you to customize the colors of the background and font where you could match any color possible. With brightness, you can have the setting so when you touch the screen it goes to maximum and then dims to a preset amount after a predetermined amount of time, so don't worry about it being too bright.

When I bought it I thought I was going to have this massive tablet like object on the wall, but look at the dimensions again and you'll see that it is actually smaller than a 15 year old programmable thermostat, yet I'm able to see the temperature with ease across a 25' room. I integrated my three with SmartThings and Alexa pretty easily. Alexa lets you ask what the temperature is in each room with whatever custom name you give and allows you to change the temperature as well. You can also change the temperature and manually program everything from your phone or the internet, which makes it easy when you're not home.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the only smart thermostat worth getting.

Didn't even last 2 months

I bought this this in August but only had it installed the end of December. I've been using this for 6 weeks and it will nonlingwr connect to the internet. I was on the phone with customer service for 1 hr and 40 minutes trying to use my phone as a hot spot to see if it was my service provider, reset to factory settings...nothing. They are sending out a replacement but honestly, I am so disappointed with this purchase. I really hope the new one lasts longer.

The thermostat is great, the temperature range between on/off is very good, maybe 1 deg. The Total Connect app is excellent, so much so that I should have went with the cheaper version of this thermostat (without Alexa integration) and used IFTTT. After I looked at the very limited functions for controlling the thermostat directly though Alexa I decided to only use IFTTT that links to the app via of Alexa which provides almost all the control functionality of the app (which are plenty).

Update:

Unfortunately I had to get rid of this thermostat. It worked great back in the winter when operating my gas furnace but in the summer months wow my electric bill exploded. Upset I called the electric company couldn't understand why my bill was $40 more a month than last year. Long story short, they concluded my AC was cycling ON/OFF too often. Apparently it takes way more electricity to initially start the AC compressor than it does to let it run longer. They suggested setting the thermostat swing so that it turns the AC on at about 1.2 - 1.5 degrees over the set temperature. Which isn't an option with this (or most) of the electronic thermostats sold today. Honeywell says it is hard coded to about 1.0 degrees (I think it is closer to .5 degrees). So if you like to keep your house at a constant temperature, perhaps at this expense of a higher electric bill this is a great thermostat.

I almost forgot...I'm now using a LuxPro Wifi thermostat, which has a wide range of swing settings. I haven't had it long enough to see if it will make a difference on my bill but I can't see why it wouldn't. The AC doesn't run nearly as often anymore.

One fatal flaw

This product has many nice features;
- It installed easily / instructions were great!
- It looks great on the wall
- It's easy to use

However, and this is a BIG and ultimately fatal however
- If the product looses internet connectivity, it may not, and probably will not, reconnect without personal / onsite interaction.
- This was confirmed with a call to Honeywell tech support

I purchaced this for a vacation home where I could remotely monitor interior temperature over extended away periods of time. During the last Honeywell initiated internet update, I lost connectivity and have never been able to reconnect, making this product useless. I have a Nest remote thermostate in our other home, and have never had this issue, even with internet outages. Unless you plan to always be present to reconnect your thermostat from time to time, I recommend you look at other brands

Update: Problem solved / replaced with Nest!

Note: I had requested to return this thru Amazon back in November, even though I could not do so until I returned to our vacation home in June. June was well past the allowable return period. I printed out the return label in November. Removed and returned the Honeywell product when we got back to our vacation home and received full credit. Amazon rocks! Why would you ever buy from anyone else!

Easy Install; good software; never going back to non-networked thermostats

Installed five of these and had no significant issues. The setup went smoothly, both on the thermostats themselves, and on the Honeywell website. The iPhone app works great; have already used it to change temps a couple of times while away from home. Would never go back to non-networked thermostats after experiencing this convenience.

Some comments about the physical installation:
-the hole spacing matched that of my prior thermostats, so I didn't have to drill any holes. I just used the screws and anchors that were already there. I also already had all the required wires, including the "C" wire.
-the main issue I had to deal with was that the older thermostats were thicker, and had significant void space inside the thermostat around the hole in the wall where the wire came out, so that allowed prior installer to leave a couple of inches of thermostat wire coiled inside the thermostat. That isn't an option with these thermostats, which provide virtually zero space for any excess wire, so you have to stuff the excess wire back into the wall. In several cases, my wire couldn't be pushed back into the wall far enough, so I had to cut the wire. No biggie, but you'll want a good set of wire strippers. Attached photo shows how the wires come into the back of the thermostat and immediately split to the connectors on the left and right.
-the plastic clips that hold the thermostat body to the thermostat base aren't very strong. This became apparent on the first thermostat I installed, where I had a bit too much wire protruding from the wall, and I thought if I could push the thermostat body onto the clips, that would force the wire to compress into the space behind the thermostat. But instead the light force of the compressed wire kept pushing the thermostat out of it's clips. So I had to cut the wire shorter.
-the quality of display is OK, but in a world full of super-sharp iPhones it looks a little coarse.

Some comments on the software:
-I would like to be able to backup and restore schedules, just in case a thermostat fails. Then I would be able to upload a fully functional schedule to a new unit.
-I would like to be able to copy entire schedules from one thermostat to another. In many cases, people would want identical schedules on multiple thermostats so this would save time. In my case, I didn't want identical schedules, but they were similar enough that I would have saved a lot of time if I could have started programming each thermostat with a copy of the schedule I had just created for another thermostat.
-I would like to be able to control when the thermostat display does it's anti-burn in sequence, which occurs at 2 am in the morning, and reverses the light pattern, making most of the display white. You can set the "inactive backlight level" really low so that this isn't much of an issue, but I would still prefer that a thermostat in a bedroom not do anything in the middle of the night that might add to an insomniac's reasons for not falling asleep. So my preference would be to be able to move the anti-burn period to the daytime.
-The ability to have the thermostat automatically switch between heating and cooling is buried in an advanced setup menu. I think that should have been one of the initial setup questions, i.e. "Do you want the thermostat to be able to switch automatically between heating and cooling?" Even my old dumb thermostats could easily be switched to "Heat", "Cool" or "Auto" so I don't think it is an advanced feature that users should have to do a Google search to find, like I did. (in fairness, it is in the manual, but on page 27)

A couple of odd things about the packaging:
1) the box was labelled model RTH9580WF, but there was a sticker on the plastic wrapping that stated model TH9320WF5003. That appears to be a contractor model number. So it is unclear to me which of those model numbers Honeywell is going to think I purchased, and whether that will have any warranty implications. I hope I'll never find out.
2) three out of five thermostats arrived with the base plate separated from the main body of the thermostat in the box, while two out of five arrived with the two pieces snapped together as a unit. In my view, having them snapped together is better because there are some gold pins that protrude from the back of the thermostat body that are slightly vulnerable to bending if the base plate is not attached.

Overall though, the connectivity of these thermostats is a huge step forward, and Honeywell has done a solid job with the software that monitors and controls them.

Not smart, horrible connection issues.

Edit- I started receiving "communication alerts" from Honeywell on 9/15/18. I no longer have access to the internet functions, and have received over 90 alerts since then. A few hours later, I get a "connection restored" message, but still have no access. If you call Honeywell the first message you get is that they are aware of the problem. So it is not just me. Worse, I had a mechanical failure on my unit within moments of the first alert. I cant know if the thermostat issues caused the problem, but it is an odd coincidence. After the Ac was expensively repaired, the unit still sends out connection emails several times each day.

Original review-

I guess the "smart" part is the issue. Physical installation is fairly straightforward, and it seems to control the a/c fine. Internet setup is causing more problems. I have worked through the limited menu options, read the advice available online, and just cannot get it to connect. I am using a good router, which other devices can connect to from over 100 feet away. The Honeywell RTH9580WF can occasionally detect the router from 15 feet away, but either times out or gives me a bad password error. Even using my phone as a hotspot three feet from the unit gives similar errors. There does not seem to be an option to run a wire to the router. So none of the wifi options are available to me, including firmware updating.

A look at the online forums indicates that this is a common problem.

If your idea of fun is spending hours selecting the network, typing in the network password, then waiting for error messages, then this is the thermostat for you. I finally replaced the whole unit, and got it to work, eventually.
