Not good for wiping drives in high volume. No documentation. Inconsistent performance.
by OldMcdonald (1 out of 5 stars)
February 17, 2019

I received this unit 3 days ago and have been testing it extensively. I purchased it to WIPE several hundred SATA and SAS drives. I purchased the $1k version which will work with SAS drives (server drives) in addition to regular drives.

Here are the problems that I encountered right away:
#1. Extremely limited documentation. The "manual" that comes with this $1k unit is 1 page, double sided and does not explain anything about how the different wipe modes work. For example... What is a "Full Erase"? or what is a "Secure Erase"? What is the USB plug for, can I wipe USB drives with it or is it for something else? I searched all over the net and there is no official documentation for this product, other than what I got.
2. Inconsistent speeds. I'm testing on brand new 2TB WD drives as a test case. If I do a "Full Erase" on a single drive, it takes 3.8 hours. However, this unit lets you wipe two drives at once, so in theory 2 of the same EXACT disks plugged into the two different ports should yield the same results. Well, when you plug in 2 drives, the time to wipe almost doubles. Now it's 6 hours to wipe 2x 2TB WD drives. I've tested this with other drives as well and the time ranges between 5-7 hours on average.

IN SHORT... if you plug in 2 drives into the unit to have them both wipe at once... you pretty much double your wipe time. It doesn't seem like there is multithreading built in.
3. If you are wiping, and one drive finishes before the other (ex: one drive is 2TB and another is 1TB) you can't start a new wipe until ALL of the drives are done. This makes it very frustrating because you should be able to pull off the finished drive, hook up a new drive, and start a new wipe. But that does not work. You have to WAIT for ALL drives to finish wiping before adding a new drive.
4. It doesn't seem to matter if the disk is a 15k SAS disk or a 7200 RPM SATA disk. The speeds are pretty much identical as far as wiping.
5. Progress indication is garbage. For example, on the DOD 3 wipe, it will say 10%... 20%... 50%... etc and then it will go down to 0% again. This is probably because it's wiping it 3 times, but there is no indication of what the REAL progress is. Unless you're watching it for 15 hours straight you won't know how far along it really is because there is no indication of which pass it's on and how far along it really is.
6. There was no information on speeds either, so I did some speed testing (this is not a review, just a heads up for anyone looking to find out how long it takes to wipe a drive)... In "Full Erase", which is not explained as to what exactly it is... it takes about "3.8" hours to wipe a 2TB disk. If you plug in two disks it will take about 6 hours. In "DOD 3" erase mode, it takes 15 hours to wipe the same disks. In "Secure Erase" mode it takes about 8 hours to wipe the two disks.
7. After running for about 48 hours straight the unit develops a flicker on the LCD and has to be rebooted. Even after reboot, it will randomly flicker and display weird characters on the LCD.

Overall... This product works, but for $1k I expected much more. It seems like there was no effort put into the GUI or the documentation. It will probably wipe, but what it's really doing behind the scenes as to what the different wipe modes is very unclear, so I'm not confident in trusting it.

Very fast duplicator
by MATTHEW A KENDALL (4 out of 5 stars)
December 20, 2018

This is the fastest SATA to SATA duplicator that I've used and it works very well. Although, in my opinion it loses a star because it has a hard time with some Windows 10 partitions and I haven't figured out what the commonality is yet. Frequently, it reports BAD MASTER HDD when I attempt to duplicate certain Windows 10 HDDs or SSDs. When I use my Carry On duplicator (probably half the speed of the Startech), it will work for those drives that the Startech has a problem with. Other than this small issue, I highly recommend this Startech for anyone needing to quickly duplicate a SATA drive.

If your a tech who routinely needs to copy or erase HDs this is a great tool and value. The one limitation is it can't copy from a larger drive to a smaller one.

The duplicator did copy my computer HD to a new SSD without flaws. 500GB HD took only about 10 minutes. Also works on DVR HD which ca not be read (propitiatory). I created copy of all my shows (usually you loose them) before replacing the drive in DVR. The drawback is that the new drive has to be the same size or larger.
