Awesome All Around Watch For Work or Play
by Philly116 (5 out of 5 stars)
January 16, 2015

This is such a nice G-shock. It is very well made and looks awesome. The shade of green is so nice and subtle. Like a WW2 green if that makes sense! The features are very easy to use and easy to navigate. The stainless buttons add so much to the rugged appearance of this watch. My friend referred to it as a "tank on my wrist", right colors and everything. This is also one of the most comfortable watches I have worn. There are several settings for wrist size and its very lightweight. This watch will be at home at church on Sunday, hunting, or just a night out. Easy 5 stars on this watch. Its similar in size to my well worn GX-56, (pictured). There are some complaints about the display, I'm a negative display guy so the display looks great to me. Just know you are buying a NEGATIVE DISPLAY, its going to look different. I will admit the first negative display watch I got I had to get used to, it was a transition. I wouldn't have anything else now. My advice would be give the negative display a few days before you decide you don't like it. If I had to make one minor complaint about the watch, and believe me, its minor, I wish the display was back lit instead of the light being on the side and illuminating the face from the side, whatever though. That's of no consequence. Casio hit it out of the park with style and function on this model.

Great, high quality watch with few very minor annoyances
by Andrius Dukšta (5 out of 5 stars)
December 25, 2016

So there has been 2 months since I bought this watch. Overall, I am very happy with it, it really met my expectations, with just a few very minor annoyances which I am okay to put up with.

Ergonomics:

I was a little worried about the size of it, since I know that many big watches (including many cheaper G-Shocks) feel like a brick on your wrist: unnatural, inconvenient, and bulky. Fortunately, this is NOT the case with Rangeman - it "hugs" the wrist in a nice natural way, feels comfortable and nice in general.

Strap is much improved in comparison to, say, G-Shock Riseman GW-9200 [which has the crappiest strap ever and breaks every 3-6 months]. Rangeman's strap is more comfortable, MUCH more rugged and reliable... Yet it's still far from perfect, since I own another watch that has absolutely the best feeling strap I've ever came across: 5.11 Tactical 'Sentinel'. Oh how I wish Rangeman had such a strap... I can just imagine Sentinel's strap on Rangeman's body... A man can dream.

Buttons are very well made, very rugged feel, very confident operation. The sensor (compass/baro/alti/temp) button could be positioned better, though - being perpendicular to the hand it is prone to accidental push from time to time, no matter how well they try to protect it. Although this issue only happens to me when wearing thick gloves.

The size of this watch becomes big advantage in cold weather, when wearing many layers of clothing and thick gloves - any smaller watch would either disappear between the layers or be impossible to strap on top of the clothing. Buttons are also just large enough to operate watch with thick gloves on. You can see how well it's size fits with thick clothing and gloves in few pictures I have shared here (sorry for crappy photo quality, the best camera we had at the moment was el. cheapo smartphone).

Appearance:

It looked mega cool in pictures, and it looks very cool in reality. No doubt I expected pictures to look cooler than real-life model, but I wasn't disappointed: you could say real watch has 90% of coolness seen in pictures. Yes, it looks big, but despite that it also looks quite natural, at least on my hand.

I am NOT a fan of shiny metallic accents such as strap holder and screws, but don't have a problem with them either. Although punting DLC coating on them would add at least +10 coolness points to the appearance of this watch in my opinion.

Functionality:

Altimeter and compass both work perfectly fine for non-professional use ant they are very precise for that matter. I don't care for barometer, though, and watch-based thermometer in general is useless for most cases anyway, so no comments here.

World time is very easy to access and use and is very convenient, since home timezone is displayed at all times on the top.

Stopwatch is accessible via single button press from home screen, which I find ultra-useful and convenient.

Back-light is totally sufficient in 95% of situations, although I like the looks of G-Shock's traditional green back-light much better than this blue one. It's a little uneven, also - light is a tad brighter on one side of the screen.

Battery is good, too - I got this watch when rainy-cloudy season was just starting (and believe me, everything is dark and grey here when it starts). Despite that, battery being on "medium" out of box held just fine. Yet because of my OCD I just had to put it under a bright lamp for several hours to charge it to "full", otherwise it would mess with my head :-)))

Ruggedness:

Water, cold weather, bumps and hits are nothing to this watch. I like to compare it to my CAT B-100 phone: both are completely indestructible. Unless you would try to destroy them on purpose, of course (and even then it would not be easy).

The negative display:

Since many people raise such big issues with it, I decided to dedicate entire paragraph to it. Yes, it's not perfect, and being a negative display is at times harder to read than regular high contrast display. But it really isn't a problem unless you are 70-year old man with rapidly declining vision. It's perfectly readable under daylight conditions. A little harder to comprehend quickly on a very cloudy and rainy day (though still not a problem). And at twilight/night/dawn you will want to use back-light button to illuminate display anyways. My only complaint would be that they chose low-contrast gold/copper shade for symbols instead of regular silver-gray which works so much better on black background.

All in all, readability of the display is totally fine, though not ideal. It could be a minor annoyance at most, but not a real problem.

Love it so far

I've had this watch in my cart forever and finally caved. Looks good and fits good on my 7" wrist. The negative display isn't as easy to read as the positive but that should be evident if you have read or watched any reviews. I like the subdued look.

It came with a full battery charge and synced up with the atomic clock at 2am the first night. Very satisfied customer.

Great balance of style and ruggedness

This is my first G-Shock watch and I absolutely love it. I was a little concerned after reading the other reviews about being hard to see the negative display but I have had no problem reading the time in daylight outside or nighttime with the light up display. I think the light is plenty efficient in illuminating the display to read it. I like that it stays on for a shorter amount of time because I don't need to stare at my watch for 10 seconds to understand what time it is and it's nice in a movie theater or a dark room because it doesn't stay on forever. When I first got my watch, the battery read "Medium" charge so I just had it in the sun for an hour while I was outside and it charged back up to a high battery charge. So I love the solar feature. For never owning a G-Shock before, I found it pretty simple to operate and understand and I love using all of its features. It's waterproof and rugged and I wear it everywhere for everything and it still looks perfect. If it gets dirty, I just wash it off in the sink and it's good to go. The olive green is a very nice color and it looks more stylish than just black. I'm very happy with the product and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Good quality, but has an Achilles heel
by Jeremy (3 out of 5 stars)

I've had a G shock before and have been very impressed with it. It has held up for over 5 years and is still going, but I wanted to splurge on something new. Enter the Rangeman. Great quality watch. Its has a sharp display, with big enough numbers and letter....when you can see them. The negative display basically ruins the potential for the watch. I literally opened the box, took the watch out, looked at the display and said to myself, this isnt gonna work for me. Ordered the black rangman the same day. You need a lot more light than usual to see this. When you read other reviews that say this, BE AWARE, it's TRUE. That said, its comfortable and I loved the green color. The buttons are of great quality, so not a total loss. Hope this helps

Pictures supplied are in good lighting and in shaded lighting (same room under counter).

Best watch I have ever owned.
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

I have previously owned a Pathfinder as well as the black version of this, so I knew I would be happy with another Rangeman. I was drawn the OD green as well as the negative display which reads very clearly given adequate lighting.

The ABC's - Altimeter, Barometer, Compass...

I personally rely on the barometer and find it provides accurate readings. I had to calibrate the compass but that is a quick and simple task.

The atomic timekeeping is spot on, having updated nearly every night so far.

Alarms are adequately loud and easy to set.

World time cities can be selected both in forward and reverse.
1,000 hour stopwatch and 24 hour timer.

Auto (tilt) elimination. One or three second light display and optional button tone mute.

I even use the time recording function to track medications and other events. I cannot recall ever owning a watch that offers so many features that I personally find useful.

Comfortable and compared to other large watches not too clunky or heavy. My wrist is mid size at approximately 7.5+" and I think the aesthetics are nice.

I highly recommend this watch.

Awesome G-Shock
by Daniel S. (5 out of 5 stars)
January 11, 2018

I'm not sure what I can say about this watch that hasn't already been said. The rangeman is awesome. It's one of the best looking G-Shock watches on the market and it's packed with awesome features. I'm not going to go in depth pn the features as a lot of people here already have. The bottom line on the triple sensor is that it works well enough. It's not a precision instrument and no one should be expecting a precision instrument at this price.

With all that being said, I'd be a bit less pleased with this watch if I had paid the retail price. For $200 or so I'm very satisfied with this purchase. The only trouble it has given me is that occasionally when I turn DST off, the watch will turn it back on automatically after it comes back on from being in it's, I guess, "sleep" mode? Probably not a big deal to most people but I live in Arizona and we don't use DST so it is annoying when I have to go back and reset the time.

The last thing I have to say about this watch is that it's surprisingly great for small wrists. The band attaches to the watch in a way that it doesn't create a strange gap between the band and my wrist. I have skinny, bony wrists and my DW-6900 looks a bit silly on my wrist. I would absolutely buy this watch again and recommend it to friends. Just as long as they buy it on Amazon, where it's cheap.

Your child headed to the military? Get this G Shock!
by Fallensavior (5 out of 5 stars)
May 22, 2019

My son waited to see what G Shock he wanted for after BCT. He had a basic one he and all the trainees at that time purchased at the PX. As time went by and he was close to starting recon school, he told me which one he wanted. I went to get it, but was told this one was better due to a few things such as underwater depth, and something with navigation (can you tell I don't know much about it other than it's needed?) We gave him this one for a graduation gift and since then, it rarely leaves his wrist. He was shocked to see he got this one in particular because he hasn't asked for it. He says it's his life saver. He also is just a private starting off, but his watch (this one)... many of the sergeants around him have this exact one and have for many years they said.

G-shock durability
by BuckSnort (4 out of 5 stars)

I really like this watch over all; the color, the screen, the rugged design alladd up to a very nice time piece. Some people have commented on the negative display as being hard to read. This is my first negative display and I love it. The barometer is accurate and thermometer is also as long as it hasn't been on your wrist for about 20 minutes. With it on I find it to be 10 to 15 degrees hotter. The altimeter I am struggling with because it seems to be accurate sometimes and way off other times. I often recalibrate it to a known reading of 1210 at my house but still wonders. Overall it is a great watch and I am very happy with it.

Awesome watch!
by 11A (5 out of 5 stars)
July 17, 2017

I went back and forth on this watch and a couple of other G-Shocks forever. This was my favorite one as far as appearance but was worried about the negative display. But in the end it just looked too good so I went for it and I'm not disappointed at all! This thing is awesome and it does all the stuff it says it does with the accuracy one should expect.

As for the negative display, it hasn't been a problem. Outside in the sun it's no issue at all. At work under fluorescent lights it's no issue at all. Here's the best way to describe the negative display: Like any digital watch on the planet, in low light or complete darkness, you must use the watch's light in order to read it. With this watch, the level of darkness in which you need to use the light comes earlier. That's it. So if that's an issue for you, get a different watch. The place I've had the most trouble seeing the watch is in my bedroom at night because the light in there isn't great (I was checking out all the features after getting it). So if you're going through the manual and looking through all the features on the watch make sure you get some good light so you can see it. Or if you spend the majority of your time in a low light (but not a completely dark) environment maybe just pass on it all together. But if you're like me (and I would assume most people) 90% of time you'll either be in plenty of light or complete darkness. In those to scenarios this watch is perfect. And for the other 10% of the time, hit the light button, read your watch, and carry on.
