Product Description

Brought to You by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild The origins of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild are shrouded in mystery. Some accounts trace the Guild's birth to Athens in the latter half of the 4th century BCE. Allegedly, several lesser philosophers grew weary of the endless Socratic dialogue endemic in their trade and turned to crafting household implements and playthings. (Hence the assertions that Socrates quaffed his hemlock poison from a Guild-designed chalice, though vigorous debate surrounds the question of whether it was a "disappearing" chalice.) Others argue that the UPG dates from the High Middle Ages, when the Philosophers Guild entered the world of commerce by selling bawdy pamphlets to pilgrims facing long lines for the restroom. Business boomed until 1211 when Pope Innocent III condemned the publications. Not surprisingly, this led to increased sales, even as half our membership was burned at the stake. More recently, revisionist historians have pinpointed the birth of the Guild to the time it was still cool to live in New York City's Lower East Side. Two brothers turned their inner creativity and love of paying rent towards fulfilling the people's needs for finger puppets, warm slippers, coffee cups, and cracking up at stuff.

Great gift

I purchased these for my granddaughters. They are a bunch of fun, everybody is excited to get a planet with their birthday cake. A nice buy. I would recommend these just for the fun, the education is an added plus.

Made a great gift!

We bought this great set of plates for our son-in-law. His oldest son is 'into' space and they love to eat off these dishes. He had great success getting his youngest to eat something by saying, 'Lets see how ___ tastes on Mars!' The child actually ate this food item he had been avoiding like the plague. It seems to be an adventure to eat lunch on Jupiter or dessert on Pluto. Great fun to be had with these very well made plates.

Like others, I also received 2 Venus plates

Like others, I also received 2 Venus plates, no Jupiter. Good quality plates, but what's the point of getting planet-themed dishware if they don't represent ALL of the planets? Will be attempting to get my money back.

Look cool but poor quality
by Callisto9248 (3 out of 5 stars)

These plates look super cool, but the quality is poor. Several of the plates came with bubbles in the finish and/or scratches, so I'm guessing they won't hold up very well to regular use. Way overpriced for the quality; I expected plates in this price range to show up without significant defects. Cheapo melamine plates from Target that we have used for the last year don't have the blemishes that these do straight out of the box.

Sure wish they would come up with a "Pluto" dessert plate!

Gave a set to 2 of my sons' families about 10 years ago; they were not impressed. They are not microwavable so maybe the moms didn't like. Recently, we had a "Moon Walk" celebration so I had a party for 2 local sons/families; they loved these plates so I ordered yet another set. Last week-end I hostessed a luncheon to honor honor a 12 member Ugandan worship team. As I always like to have a "theme" when I entertain, that became: We are all from the same planet"; used my mom's paperweight collection with flowers for the table; they loved it! They were fascinated with the plates & paperweights. So fun! But don't use in microwave! Please come up with Pluto... salad plates??

Fun Plates for the star gazer in your life...
by Anne (5 out of 5 stars)

Bought these for my 8 year old son for Christmas. He loves anything related to Outer Space, so he loved these plates, as do my other kids. The kids get excited to see what planet they get when eating dinner. The plates overall have a nice look with the different planet designs and colors. They are made from Melamine, so very durable and great to use with kids in the house. We love these so much, I may end up ordering the matching bowl set.

Nice artistic planet plates!
by Anime Fanatic (5 out of 5 stars)

These plates are vibrant and colorful. They appear to simply be artistic representations of the planets, rather than color corrected NASA pics, so there's some license taken.

Check each plate upon receiving them, we had one that was flawed from manufacture. Seller accepted the return, and the second set was fine. Would buy again.

An item that spanned the generations.
by Ralph E. Curtis (5 out of 5 stars)

I was fascinated by space since grade school and watched the Mercury launches, and Gemini and Apollo with exhilaration. My children and now my grandchildren share this enthusiasm and were so excited over the planet plates that I had to lay them all out while they told me all about the planets.

Learning the planets
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
March 8, 2016

The planet plates were much nicer and sturdier then expected. Bought as gift for little grandkids who are still using plastic plates. These melamine plates had great graphics in intense colors and are very attractive. The older grandson ticked off the names of the planets while we checked the back of the plates for the names. Great fun to use and now we are all learning the names of planets. The only downside of the plates is they are listed as non microwave safe. Having them microwave and dishwasher safe would be the full package.

These are gorgeous and cool. Sent them to college with my son (can't break them!) and they've withstood the test of time.

These are totally awesome! But I think we need to add back ...

These are totally awesome! But I think we need to add back in some Kuiper Belt objects (a.k.a. Pluto)!
