Love the look but causes small damage from the zipper over time.

I love, love, love the way this case looks. I have owned this case for the past 1-2 years and it works really well. I've only had 2 problems with this case. 1. The zipper at the corner (where the laptop opens) caused a small dent in my laptop on both sides. The zipper at the edge, when the laptop is open, rubs the corners of the laptop. It really annoys me that my laptop was damaged because of the case, but I have not found another case I love the look of more. Plus this case is very expensive! 2. One of the zippers has slowed and is really hard to close. This problem just occurred recently and I am unsure why the zipper is so hard to close, but I try not to zip that side anymore. Overall, If the zipper didn't cause damage to the edges of my laptop it would have been the perfect case. I included a pic of the small dents below.

Read other reviews for Pros. I'm here for few Cons and Differences

I am using it for my 12' MacBook Retina.

It fits snuggly well. Not much room for the device to move around after it is zipped.

Design is beautiful and easily become the center of attention. People are jealous, as they should be. It's near $100 laptop case.

Despite many wonderful aspects, I do want to mention two minor inconvenience as I have been using it for few months now.
1) The headphone jack and the USB-C port are somewhat hindered by the zippers. Not a deal breaker at all but fyi.
2) As I open and close the laptop, the monitor slips out (of the two elastic bands that hold the corners of the monitor) once in a while. So I have attached male and female velcro patches between the cover and the bottom of the laptop to secure it from sliding. It fixed the sliding issue and I am very satisfied with it now, BUT you may not be the type of person who would put velcro patches on your brand new laptop. So, this is something to think about.

I've also noticed that the quality/features of Rutledge Leather DIFFERS from Vintage Leather
1) Obviously the outward color/design of antiqueness (Seems like color of Rutledge version differs model by model too)
2) The Vintage has more of "round/smooth" spine, whereas Rutledge has "angled" spine, as you can see from picture I've uploaded.
3) The type of band that holds the monitor used is different as well. Not that it matters, buy seems like it's intact and wouldn't rip off any moment.

I think you should still give it a try. 12' BookBook fits well with 12' Macbook. Well crafted.

BookBook Case for my Macbook Pro 13 inch, Late 2016, no touchbar.
by OMD (5 out of 5 stars)
November 1, 2017

Excellent case. Expensive yes, but it really works. Everyone keep stopping me to comment about the "unique computer case". I really love it. HOWEVER i made 3 adjustments to make it work for me.
1. Once I bought my new Macbook Pro in late 2016, I started looking for the case, but Book-Book had not yet made new ones. It took a long time waiting to get the right product. However, when it was finally available in Mid 2017, I was unsure about the size they supplied since it seemed to be cut to a perfect size and yet I've found that if the case is too perfect sizewise, then the corners of the computer hit the ground through the zip if you dropped it! So I finally didn't buy the new 13 inch Macbook pro cases. Instead I chose to buy the older 2015 case which is a little bigger than the 2017 cases. This allows that now - if I drop my comp - IT WILL NEVER hit the concrete because of the additional margin around the edges. I now feel super safe with the case.
2. Secondly, the elastic bands never work of course, so I cut out the ones provided, and stitched in my own. Now the top of the screen NEVER slips out no matter how wide open I open the computer. See photo at macbooks full open position.
3. Thirdly, everyone complains that the computer NEVER stays in place and can drop out of the case when one opens it because theres nothing to hold it down. Well, I stuck-on 4 small velcro strips on the bottom of the computer, and on the case. This way the computer does not move at all. You literally have to tear it out/off the case. Again, I feel super safe with it. Maybe Book-Book should supply these velcro strips with the case.

15 inch Retina Macbook Pro Rutledge doesn't fit in the 15inch rMBP case case. Buy a knockoff.
by T (1 out of 5 stars)
March 30, 2016

I had the 13 inch version of this case and really liked it. In fact, I pre-ordered it, and got frequent complements. The 15 inch version is terrible, however. I advise you to buy a knockoff instead. It has a "book case" square hinge instead of the round leather hinge. I think as a result, the case is bigger than the laptop. Only if the laptop is pushed firmly to the back of the hinge every time you open the case do the top straps holding the laptop actually cover the top corners of the screen, and very little of it at that. Even if you push the laptop all the way to the hinge, there's at least an inch of clearance at top and bottom. I can only conclude that they made this version without ever actually putting a 15 inch Macbook in it. It's hard to imagine this could be a conscious decision.

The failure to include a bottom holding mechanism was always a design flaw, but now that there's almost no hold in the top of the laptop, the laptop itself sometimes slides completely out of the case if on a slanted surface.

It's a shame this fairly promising accessories company didn't keep their quality up when demand expanded. The cover, coloring, and build of this laptop is very nice.

UPDATE: The laptop actually slid out of the holding straps in transit this morning, and I dropped it on the floor when I unzipped it.

Works for Dell XPS 15 (model 9560)
by Craig Edward Given (4 out of 5 stars)
July 29, 2017

I bought this for a Dell XPS 15 model 9560 based on the measurements. There's a good 1/2 inch of lateral wiggle room and about the same front-to-back. Since this XPS model is slightly smaller than the case, the corner straps don't reach the laptop screen, but I didn't find them necessary. The case worked fine without using the corner straps and even if they did reach I'd probably still not use them since I prefer the cleaner aesthetic. The zippers allow power cords and USB cords/thumbs to be used while the laptop remained in the case. One downside of the zippers (and this would apply to Macbooks as well) is that they must be fully unzipped for normal use. Requiring the zipper heads to be so far back also means they get stuck and have to be wrestled back into alignment! It's a pain, and not a problem of quality but rather of design, and may have been unavoidable, but I'm worried about long term durability.

A serious production mistake!
by Ferda Lo (3 out of 5 stars)

There is a problem with the product: The cross position of rubber tapes are not good enough.. It should be stiched more lower parts also the same thing should be arrance for the bottom keyboard part. Because computer releases itself from the top cover easily and the whole thing is meaningless. As a result, they need to evaluate the product more and make to top stiching for the screen area with more wide hold possibilty, (So it is not easy to be out of its place) and they should add two more rubber crosses for the keybord part of the Mac.. I had to make this extra job with the help of a proffesional shoe maker and he made a very good job.. But naturally the leather corners dameged because of that process. Please inform the concern ones about my recommendation.. Else cover is fantastic, but this simple thing will make a big change on the product..

Beautiful, but not durable
by Reese (2 out of 5 stars)
December 4, 2016

Purchased this case in April 2016, it is now December 2016. It it a beautiful case, disguises your laptop, and my Macbook Air fit perfectly in it, or so I thought. Unfortunately, the fabric attached to the zipper is of low quality and is not strong enough to hold laptop securely within the case; holes started ripping on outer corners of case causing my laptop to dent (from exposure) just in those corners. As the fabric wears the case starts to fit less snug on your laptop causing your laptop to slide around the case. Another concern I had was the overheating aspect, if I were to use my laptop for long periods of time, I just take it out. Over all the top and bottom are protected, but the edges are not, definitely not worth the $80-$100 you're considering paying.

EXQUISITELY MISPROPORTIONED
by GO DAWGS! (3 out of 5 stars)
August 20, 2017

EXQUISITE AESTHETICS, BUT WAY TOO BIG. And I just thought it was supposed to be that way--so now I'm stuck with a cover that's 1.25" WAY TOO BIG on the keyboard side.

Backstory: My son preferred the other design,"Twelve South BookBook for MacBook | Vintage leather book case/sleeve for 13-inch MacBook Air/Pro"--and it was WAY backordered.

Since I (and my daughter--so I'm actually stuck with TWO) preferred the FABULOUS aesthetics of the more Old World looking "Twelve South RUTLEDGE BookBook for MacBook | for 13-inch MacBook Air/Pro" I took delivery of TWO OVERSIZED BOOK BOOKs *weeks* before my son's "Vintage leather book" finally arrived.

My son's "Twelve South BookBook for MacBook | Vintage leather book case/sleeve for 13-inch MacBook Air/Pro" arrived this morning and it fits PERFECTLY SNUG and SECURE. I am DEEPLY disappointed that my return date of JULY 10 is WELL past and TWO of these $99 "RUTLEDGE" covers, (son's "Vintage" was only $79!) ARE WAY TOOOOOO BIG for our three identical MACs.

Twelve South is a company homegrown in South Carolina and I adore the concept---but I got burned with TWO "covers" that slide around and have no real grip on the 13" Macbook Air that they are supposed to protect.

WIDTH IS PERFECTLY SNUG, so it can't be a 15" cover by mistake. The problem is that when the Mac is snugged into the two elastic bands on the lid/screen section, the base, keyboard half is still WELL 1.25" gapped of meeting the edge of the cover, so the MacBook Air slides around while you are using it.

I think the design problem is the spine. The RUTLEDGE has a very SQUARE spine and causes the extra inches to be proportioned to the keyboard side and the VINTAGE haas a ROUND spine that more evenly positions the MAC securely in both sides of the cover.

Side note, leather tabs on zipper, as well as the zipper itself on the VINTAGE is MUCH SUPERIOR. Im sure the offshore contract is to blame as well. Add the backorder difference between the two designs and I'd guess the RUTLEDGE is sourced from India, and the VINTAGE from China. (Global Supply Chain professional in the house. :)

Great concept...but buy the VINTAGE for its PERFECT FUNCTION, buy the RUTLEDGE for its EXQUISITE FORM.

Very cool look. Quality doesn't seem so Good.
by TruReview4U (3 out of 5 stars)
November 5, 2014

I've always loved Twelve South products for the Coolness Factor. There's nothing else that looks as cool as their BookBook products. I now own a BookBook for a iPad 3, a iPad Mini, a Macbook Air 13", a iPhone 5S wallet case and this most recent purchase of the Rutledge BookBook for a new Macbook Retina 13".

The look and feel for all my previous BookBooks has been that of real quality. The fit and finish is great on them all. The zippers on my previous ones were a little sensitive and required care when using them, but all have held up except for the one for our iPad 3 BookBook; one of the zippers broke off.

This new Rutledge BookBook maintains the very cool look I'm accustomed to with the previous BookBooks, however, the quality does not seem to be there. It feels very flimsy compared to my previous models. They seem to have used a thinner leather and perhaps a thinner hard core. It just feels like it won't last. The zipper is the same way. The previous zippers were a little temperamental, but this new one feels like it will fail after just a few uses. I'll obviously have to be extremely careful when opening and closing this one.

I'm really disappointed with the feel and build quality of this latest Rutledge BookBook for 13" Macbook Retina. I still love the idea of them and the look so I'm sticking with it to give it a try, but right out of the box, it feels like something has changed with the production of these compared to our older ones.

Your macbook is instantly a vintage book - charming and beautiful! A win!
by Bonnie (5 out of 5 stars)
June 25, 2017

My husband instantly coveted this the moment he saw it. It's very charming, well-made and quite beautiful, giving your laptop the look of a substantial vintage book, perfect for the historian, Sherlockian, Wild West afficionado, steampunk fan, or anyone who just loves the look of beautiful old things, from a time when minimalism had not yet taken over the design world. It feels nice in the hands, too. I would say it provides some protection, but not as much as a heavily padded modern zip case, but enough for my purposes. I love it. Not cheap, but nice things seldom are. Worth it for the charm and cachet, in my opinion. It makes me smile every time I see it. I'm starting research on a new book and look forward to taking my laptop into the library in this case.
