Slow but sure

You will need to have a lot of fuel, a lot of time and need a lot of hot water to make it worthwhile. I tried it on a beer can alcohol stove (a 5 minutes on 1.5 ounces of fuel to boil a pint of water type) and a gas one type portable hob which gets this things whole pot to boil in under ten minutes and with both I never got more than 3 bars out of the charger but more like a steady 2. I expect you will need a blow torch type burner to get max charge out of this and then you will be boiling the water in three minutes but once the water boils you get 2 bars at most. I expect it may be useful for topping off a cell phone booster battery. As far as emergency communications phones go I would carry a feature phone (RAZR V3) as a back up, one that has 250 hours standby on battery, that can make emergency calls only with no sim, and one I could fit my smart phones sim into with an adapter. There is a something to be said for using your smart phone only on wifi only and using an old school feature phone exactly as what it was designed for, a phone. You can do the math, if your phone as a 2000 mha battery then this thing needs to run for 2 hours to give full charge and with water boiling every 10 minutes and needing to be swapped out that is a lot of lot of water.

But the original version if you can

I first bought a power pot years ago on sale at Acadamy. That thing was amazing! We'd place it near a fire and it charged all of our devices. We became so reliant on it we ditched our battery headlamps, steripen, etc in favor of usb charging devices. Then one day we did what we knew not to do and ran it dry on accident. It was toast.

So we bought another one. I was so happy because this was the next generation one and I figured it would be even better then our old one!! No. This one would barely charge at all unless you were over a jet boil. Luckily we were able to use a grill leftover by someone in the backwoods so we could get a fire underneath it hot enough to charge at a snails pace. Very disappointed.

Pretty damn cool actually

You know, I was a skeptic.. I'm thinking, micro thermal electric generator for emergency situations or backpacking.. has to be novelty.

BUT! This this thing kicks ass! lol I found for using smartphones like iPhone, switching the phone to airplane more while charging (which takes seconds to set up) makes it charge faster.

I gained 10% battery in 10-15 min! Plenty for a phone call or text message. Or at that rate you could play games while you cook food and never worry about battery depletion!

I am only giving 4 stars though, simply because it comes with multiple adapters for outdated electrical devices.. basically useless. And they claim you can use the additional pot it comes with as a lid but if that pot is in use.. there is no lid to this kit. Also very bulky.. not so much a grab and go item.

Overall, buy it.

It would be perfect for home use in an emergeny with an esbit stove or likewise fuel sorce. Or great for the car camping crowd. If you wanna backpack with it, have a big pack.

spoiler, if you wish to charge faster, don't allow water in pot to boil. I DIDNT SAY REMOVE FROM HEAT. I said don't let it boil.. add cold items to water to maintain temp.. Research thermoelectric generators on Google if you wanna know why this works.

Novel Idea

It was more of a novelty purchase. We tried it out on a trip to the BWCA and it did work with the gas cook stove with a consistent 1 or 2 bars of charge. It would require careful attention so you didn't boil the water out. When it came to the campfire though it was another story. The pot would carbon up on the outside effectively insulating it and it was difficult to protect the wires from the heat of the fire. I would only recommend it with a stable flame on a cook stove, and with constant supervision.
