Ideal for Parents of Young Children
by Dad's Garage (4 out of 5 stars)
September 15, 2014

This seems to be the ideal gun safe for responsible and prepared parents.

We like the biometric only option to open the safe. Curious two-year-olds can find keys, both mechanical and the RFID kind, and gain access to guns. By requiring a fingerprint we are assured that they will not be able to open it even if they find the key.

We were concerned about the reader's speed and reliability using the fingerprint reader. We swipe our fingerprints to access our laptop and phones. This can be infuriating and would be unacceptable during an emergency should we need to access to guns while under stress.

Reading our fingerprint is not instantaneous. It takes a second to identify our finger and release the spring loaded clam shell. We are able to have gun in hand in under two seconds. This is acceptable to us. We rely on a home alarm to alert us to an intrusion if one were to occur. We should have ample time to respond.

During the first month of ownership, we thought the biometric reader would prove too unreliable for us. It only opened for us about three quarters of the time. We discovered two possible culprits, dry fingers and relying on the battery. The first is solved simply by moistening our finger before placing it on the reader. The second is solved by leaving it plugged in. We have had no problems since.

We would like to see a larger model offered. It will not hold two full sized semiautomatics and related accessories. We would like to store two full sized guns and four magazines. As it is, it holds one 4" Springfield XD and one Walther P22 with only enough room in between them for one spare magazine. The width is fine, it is just not deep enough.

The interior is lined with a rubber like material. But not all surfaces are covered; there is exposed bare aluminum. When we go to move the safe, our inclination is to carry it like a laptop. The guns move around and their finish has been scratched as result. We would prefer high density foam found in virtually all gun cases to secure them from movement and damage. We would also like a handle or some grippy surface treatment to make it easier to handle.

The safe looks like some sort of electronic device and our non-gun owning friends probably just assume it is a WiFi router or cable modem. Their presumption is enhanced by the two USB ports in the rear and by the fact that it sits next to the laptop during the day on our kitchen counter. This is fine by us. It saves having uncomfortable conversations.

We withheld a star reluctantly because we like it so much. There is nothing on the market that matches it. But the cumulative weight of the negatives prevent us from giving it an enthusiastic 5 stars.

DO NOT BUY!!! Very unreliable and overpriced!

Do not believe the hype this company and others have created. Do not waste your money on this gun safe!! As of today, it completely stopped working. Dead.

I thought it was awesome for a while. The fingerprint reader completely stopped working at 14 months. Prior to that, the reader worked half the time and took 1-3 attempts to open. The latching system stopped working around 9 months and I had to manually move the latch over so the door will close.

There have probably been at least six times now where the gun box has locked me out and the fingerprint reader wouldn't work and neither did the bracelet or sticker/card. I've had to reset the fingerprint reader multiple times.

Do not trust anything with a fingerprint reader, because it will eventually go out. Only very expensive biometric fingerprint readers work well. I'm not paying money to ship this back and pay money for them to fix something that's going to break again in a matter of months.

I think that most if not all of the unverified 5 star reviews are fake...

DO. NOT. BUY. THIS. CRAP!!! Buy a safe with a keypad and key lock.

Looks great. But after a year both models are looking more like an expensive paperweight.

I bought this in June of 2015. It's just ok at this point. It looks great. It is big enough for two compacts to fit comfortably. The warranty is only good for one year, as well as the battery life warranty. And after about 10 months the hydraulic lift infrequently failed. After a year the battery only holds a charge for about 20-30 minutes if that. The benefit is you can use the USB to plug it in to you vehicle while traveling. It allows you to enter a ton of fingerprints, which is great. You will need to put in several fingers images at several different angels for each one. I would suggest using the keycard, key fob, or wristband/ring. The finger pad is very temperamental and after a year mine works maybe 10% of the time if at all. The key card works about half the time at this point. When I want immediate access to my home security I don't want to be struggling with getting the darn thing open. This is great security if you have kids, because they will never be able to get in it... and neither will you.

In March of 2016 I purchased the Gunbox Echo through the Indiegogo campaign and I was very happy when it arrived a few months later. It is a little deeper and the footprint is a little smaller compared to the 2.0. Almost a year later I am having the same issues with the finger pad. It is not just my fingers, but my husband's fingers as well. The battery life on this one still lasts a couple hours when unplugged but I wouldn't count on it for more than a short road trip. Like the 2.0, you can use the USB to plug it in to your vehicle while traveling.

Unfortunately I spent a significant amount of money on a product that has about a year shelf life. This time I emailed the company prior to the warranty running out on my Echo, so we will see what they do to keep me as a customer. Unless they extend the warranty on the products or offer a no hassle replacement, I wouldn't buy any more of these products or recommend them to anyone.

Looks great and wanted to love it....but it is too inconsistent.

I purchased this gun safe despite mixed reviews I read online. I really, really wanted to love it based on the online videos, the sleek look, and the wonderful features. When I received the safe I quickly plugged it in and programmed it. It took multiple tries to capture my fingerprint but finally got it. It seemed to be hit or miss whenever I tried to open the safe and at this point I have given up. If I had to open this safe in an emergency I just couldn't rely upon it. I was happy to pay the premium price for this safe because it looked so great, but I just can't jeopardize safety. I need a gun safe that opens fast the first time, every time.

DO NOT BUY if you intend to use fingerprint/bio as opening method! Function is erratic at best.
by WS_PA (1 out of 5 stars)

I am rarely moved to write a review, but the performance of the biometric function of this otherwise awesome and beautiful product renders it unusable. First, the product is nicely designed and gorgeous on the bedside table. The RF opening function works just fine. However, I bought this product because of the biometric/fingerprint opening function. I have used a number of different bedside pistol safes, and was anxious to move away from having to "swipe" my fingerprint (which is typically also erratic at best) or key in a code through finger taps. This seems like the perfect solution (and should be given that it's ~$325 for the RF/Bio model I purchased. In any event, the product arrives, I read the materials and even watched the set-up videos on the manufacturer's website, then proceeded to set up the product. Registering my fingerprint seemed to work fine (and I registered it several times as suggested by the manufacturer). When we attempted to register my wife's fingerprint, it wouldn't even take. Anyway, after several days of testing (attempting to open it, attempting to close it), we got erratic results at best (mostly fails with no open at all). Today, I attempted to open it a number of time using my fingerprint and it wouldn't even open at all; I had to resort to the RF card to open it (which I keep in a different safe so that my kids can't have access to it). So disappointing. I would not recommend that anyone purchase this product UNLESS they intend to use the RF opening method exclusively.

The setup was great, got 4 fingers mapped and opened and closed ...
by John Charles (1 out of 5 stars)

Please do not buy this product. The setup was great, got 4 fingers mapped and opened and closed it 4 times with no problem. Thinking everything was good I then put my gun in the case. I tried the fingerprint and I heard the sound of the motor trying to open the case but there was no opening. Tried the fob and fingerprint many times with no success. I had to get my gun out which led to the screwdriver which I actually got open fairly easily. Every part of the case that I used the screw driver broke off easily. I am not a big review poster but this product is so terrible I don't want anyone else to waste 300+ dollars. I received my case today and it is also going in the trash on the same day.

Do not buy, doesn't always work.

Man...I really wanted to love this thing. Got it soon after they came out direct from their site. The thing could have been great but they fell short on a few things.

Mine seems very sensitive to dust on the scanner. I guess this makes sense for a tactile scanner and all but the swipe style scanners don't seem to suffer this problem. My wife got a different make of box with a swipe on it and it works great, one swipe to power it on and another to open the box 1,2 done and very fast. This scanner being a flat pad is very sensitive to the angle of your finger. So if you roll your finger to the side a bit, it might not scan. Or if the angle is a little off like say, you just woke up because of a loud noise downstairs and smash your hand over to the scanner half awake but can't align your finger like a space station resupply docking maneuver.

So, I clean the sensor off and it still takes about three tries to register my fingerprint and open the dang thing. I'd practiced quite a bit and had the nack of it but it still flakes out and takes up to three tries IF IT OPENS. As if this isn't bad enough, this last year or so the pneumatic rams that are supposed to hoist the lid up...started failing. So now when it does open the lock the lid pops just a tiny bit...and the lock times out and locks back up grabbing the lid on the way. I have to snatch the lid when the lock disengages and give it a helping hand.

And, to add icing on the cake, when I first got it and had issues with the sensor I contacted their customer support and went back and forth with them in emails. Even uploaded a short video (per their request), to you tube to show proof of the thing not working well. They insisted I was doing something wrong and hey, it DOES open after all. And basically told me the product seems to work.

It's a gun safe. To store a weapon in until you need it. The idea is that you won't need it unless there is a situation that calls for you to arm yourself. In which case, fractions of a second can mean life or death. So, seems to work or works every third try just doesn't cut it.

It bums me out too because like I said, I really want to love this thing. But I simply can NOT recommend it to anyone due to the poor scanner/sensor and their customer service if no other reason. I mean, the slow/no opening lid could be something simple like needing grease or something so I'll let that one slide on the assumption it just needs some lube or something simple.

But, c'mon guys. It's a very serious thing, and the manufacturer should be all over trying to make the customer happy. I mean, what would happen if someone was injured or dies because their gun safe failed to open? I'd think providing people with replacements or updating to a better sensor unit would be a LOT cheaper in the long run than being taken to court when your product gets someone killed because it fails to work correctly...or you know, most of the time.

So, no I would not suggest this to anyone. Maybe if they swap out the sensor for the kind used in cell phones or something I'd give it another try but not like it is now, sorry.
