Performs great! Updated review

I have had my M Scooter for 8 months now and wanted to update my review. After riding along different terrains such as streets, gravel, grass and yep sand the M Scooter performed flawlessly. Even in downpours of rain here in Daytona this scooter kept going. The "Key" was to wipe this scooter down after every ride, check tire pressure and check the brakes. Battery charging is important so to achieve full battery capacity since it contains a lithium icon battery you should charge the battery even after short rides. The more you charge this battery the longer the ride will be. I have ridden this scooter for 20 miles in one day. Basically I tell people here..."Get one learn how to ride the scooter and have fun!" This is a photo of my M Scooter which I customized with lights. People luv my M scooter here!

Runs with a 350 lb man for many hours, hills, and miles!

I was very skeptical at first, quite a bit of money. I broke the seat cause I am fat and hit bumps while sitting. The seat was pretty sturdy and comfortable. It is funner standing up, you can lean it on 2 tires turning sharply. Go slow at first, it takes a little while to get used to sensitive throttle, handling, and handlebars. It has way more power than expected it peels out a lot when you gun it, so fun. Depending on weight, hills, stop and go it should go roughly 20 miles. If it was flat and 200 lbs, I bet 30 miles. It ran me up and down hills for 3 hours and another hour next day on first charge. I ran it to yellow bar while full throttle and charged for 8 hours. 2nd charge had even more power, my dog could not run faster or longer than scooter. This is one scooter you don't have to worry about being good. I really like the speed not to fast and not to slow just right to explore surroundings really well. So if you want to go faster than 20 mph or faster down or up a hill buy an expensive gas one. This scooter will get wobbly any faster than 20 to 25 mph and damage motor. It will run on almost any surface, but if you want it to last it loves smooth asphalt and can barely feel crack lines on concrete sidewalk. It has rain guards on tires, but I would not recommend snow, mud, or rain front tire slides a lot on take off and uphill. Rear brakes have more stopping power. Max weight is 200 to 250 lbs and I am 350 lbs tested the heck out of it. I ride motorcycles and this is so fun. Great for super exercising your dog. Better with right psi. The power meter is accurate at full throttle and then goes back up to full or 1 bar gone while setting still. It kinda sucks, but should be done like on bicycles and motorcycles AIR UP TIRES!!! EVERY DAY OR WHEN YOU KNOW THE TIRES WILL BE LOW. It has 3 tires so back 2 have got to have same 40 psi or it can ride titled. Tires come very low psi new. Runs better, longer with right psi in tires. It is hard on the scooter in gravel and grass, like I said made for pavement it is not a dirt bike or dirt bicycle/mountain bike.

AWESOME ENGINEERING AND POWERFUL - WELL MADE! GREAT FOR FLEA MARKETS/SWAP MEETS!

Overview:

My wife and I ordered 2 "ACTON M®" scooters. We needed something that we could ride in at a swap meet or inside an antique co-op type store to reduce tiring walking. Note that these units are not "Mobility" scooters as a FDA approved medical transport device. You need to be able to control the shift in your weight and balance your body properly. That being said, they are perfect for using in small places where normal crowds (or rules) do not normally allow. They are controllable enough to make them a must at a large antique co-op store or outdoor market. You can keep it in slow mode to stand to look over merchandise. You can stand or sit down and really move in high speed mode to make a quick "nature's call" run. The rear wheels, standing plates, and steering column fold up for transport or storage. It is moderately heavy (75 lbs.) to load/unload in a vehicle (with battery installed). If you need to just charge the batteries while in a motel, the 48 Volt battery pack has handles on a special bag to easily pull out of a locked compartment. Batteries have a separate charging socket for this use. This lowers the unit weight about 15 - 20 lbs. to help move them. The scooters handle a lot of weight and have great power for a day's worth of stop and go shopping. They are rated at 28 miles per charge, 350 lbs on the vehicle and 250 lbs. pulling. I would guess that fully loaded all day would not allow 28 miles, but have not tested them in this way. I suspect stop and go allows the battery to go a little further. The company sells these as "last mile" transport for city use, but they have a lot of other "niche" uses and are just too much fun for just taking to work.

Assembly:

I found that there was no manual for the process of the slight assembly and operation of the unit. ACTON relies on purchasers to go to their web site (ACTONglobal.com) and watch the videos posted using VIMEO. They are short videos, but most people should be able to understand the processes and concepts. I have suggested to the company to include a short written guide. It would not add much to the overall cost and would instill confidence nothing is overlooked. They are reviewing this idea now.

When the scooters arrived, I was worried because of exterior damage to the 90 pound boxes in transit. Luckily, ACTON had well placed Styrofoam and strapping around the box, as well as a large bubble-wrap bag which covers the entire unit when folded up. I would suggest everyone keep the Styrofoam and bubble wrap for the future. It is shaped and will allow transport in a vehicle without damaging the unit or you vehicle.

Unpacking was a breeze and the only assembly is to install the steering bar to the column with the included hex wrench. A second hex wrench is provided to allow you to adjust the upper steering column to the lower wheel spokes if needed.

After unpacking, I would recommend to verify there is no damage. We found scratches and digs where the steering bar cap had dug into something (probably a box staple). ACTON will correct any issues immediately if you contact them.

Design:

My impression for the scooter design is a well engineered and manufactured item. It is made out of what appears to be aircraft grade extruded aluminum to keep down the weight. It is welded at key large areas where strain would take a toll. I used to be a quality assurance inspector and I am very impressed with the design and the aluminum welds which could only be performed by well trained professionals. The design for the folding rear wheels is very well thought out. The plates used for standing are well braced and become part of the alignment and support of the rear wheels when unfolded and lowered into place. The seat will easily hold most people, but you must keep fingers clear of the seat extender when opening. The steering column is very sturdy. It has a separate positive slide lock to keep the fold mechanism in place for no chance of accidental release during use.

Overall operation:

The unit is easy to understand. 2 identical keys are provided to turn on power and allow battery to be removed. They do not lock the unit from moving. There is an unexplained section of buttons on the lower left (slide switch - DIRECTION, a large red button - HIGH/LOW SPEED, and green button - HORN). You twist the control on the right handlebar for fine speed control.

The slide switch is to switch from "Forward" to "Reverse" (slow speed only). The brake mechanism is on both sides like a standard bicycle or moped type squeeze handle mechanism. Touching either will instantly disengage the motor (front wheel drive) regardless of speed control, and it will apply solid brakes to the front and/or back. You can lock these for a parking brake when stopped. This braking does not use the motor to recharge the battery with residual kinetic energy, as ACTON wanted to make sure of positive smooth braking action.

It is a little easy to have your palm accidently hit the red SPEED button. It will increase your speed from 3 MPH max to at least 12+ MPH. One try and you will likely understand and avoid accidental pressing. This speed switch will allow fast speeds to the point it can be downright scary! Opening this up to full speed can make you go uncomfortably fast, especially if you are going downhill. I would advise you wear a helmet and other protective gear as needed.

FINAL OBSERVATIONS:

This is a great scooter and I would buy another again if needed. It collapses to 50% of its original size. It drives on pavement, gravel, dirt, etc., with all pneumatic tires. Additional items such as front basket, cup holder, and spare battery is available from the company (we bought them too). The company is responsive to both email and phone calls, but prefer email if immediate response can wait. Occasionally they will have an upcoming sale to purchase these at a better price. They will inform you of this if you call. They are still a newer company and are small. This is good because you talk to the people that are designing and fabricating, but bad because they do have schedules to meet, so they wish communication through email when possible. Great Item!

Pros: Easy assembly and use, long battery life. Key locked battery and power switch, Parking brake. Company very very helpful. Nothing else like it! Would not trade it for anything as it saves our backs and feet.

Cons: No Owner Manual, No Serial Number, No explanation of switches, Wrenches were loose flying around in box

Overall a winner, but...

Overall like it a lot. Looks good- I get a lot of compliments. Basically sturdy, well-made, drives smoothly, and very easy to operate. Holds battery charge for long time. Few relatively minor drawbacks: the 90-pound weight is sometimes problematic when lifting in and out of a vehicle, the seat is a killer- hard as a rock and came unscrewed after a few weeks, the tires started needing air almost immediately. (It advertises being able to support 300 pounds; I weigh 185.), and it doesn't do well with almost any degree of incline. All that notwithstanding, I've had the scooter for two months and I'm overall pretty happy... so far.

Acton has made a real quality product here. Everything works well. I was surprised they even included ball end allen wrenches with our Acton M Scooter. Battery endurance is astounding. My son is going to have a real fun summer now. Thanks Acton, well done....

Great product! I purchased this scooter in order to keep up with my boys as they rode bikes around our neighborhood. I was pleasantly surprised how smooth the ride and easy to control. I was also worried it would be noisy, but it is not at all. Many people have stopped and asked about it. My teens at first laughed and teased I would look older than my age, but now they love to use it themselves. Lol. It's a lot of fun!

Well built and fun!

Well built. My son has special needs and can't ride a regular bike. He had one of those children electric cars but it is barely able to cart him around anymore so we were looking for something like this scooter. The reason we chose this scooter over others was because it has a high / low setting so we can make sure he doesn't go too fast. We did have an accident with the scooter that caused the control panel to break. The manufacturer helped us to get this resolved for the cost of shipping which was nice of them. We are happy with the purchase and are looking at a second so we can follow my son around a bit easier...... or for just the fun of it...lol

Pretty cool scooter

Pretty cool scooter! Would have given it more stars but my scooter was shipped damaged. It would have been nice to have a light in the back of the scooter. The light in the front is super bright its weird they didn't think of installing a red light on the back . Also the screws that held the seat to the frame constantly were loosening up and I had to keep tightening them? The scooter is solidly built and Heavy! The stickers were on crooked and look a bit cheap. Better branding would have made this dude even more mean looking. Easy to ride with little to no time needed to figure out its quirks. Since the scooter is heavy you need to lean into the turns or you will tip over. I would definitely recommend this scooter! It's a definite head Turner on the streets!
