We have a Canary and our house was robbed last week. We never got an alert, and while the Canary captured the dudes ransacking our house for over 5 minutes, it never registered that anything was amiss. We are supposed to be alerted when there is activity in the house while we're not home, but in looking into later, we discovered that Canary, due to some mysterious malfunction, never recorded us as being absent. The Device was stuck in Home Mode, even when we had left. Our phones were with us.

To make matters so much worse, Canary Customer Service has been difficult to get into contact with, and they refuse to speak with us over the phone. They will only communicate with us through emails, and online chat.

They believe our Wifi isn't good enough. We told them our wifi is fine, and works perfectly for all other devices, and we have a lot, my husband works from home and requires fast internet speed. They then asked us to do our own troubleshooting, and provide them with a Wifi Speed test. When we provided it, customer service told us "Well that's what it is now, but we don't know what it was when your house was robbed." !!!! What?!!! Then why did you ask us for the test?

Last email we received from Customer Service says that they are passing on the complaint to the product team, and "if we could help you, we would."

Yes, you could help us. You could follow through with your products promise of protection, take accountability for the major failure, step up your customer service game, and make it right with us.

On top of having our house horribly ransacked, the stress of dealing with Canary has been overwhelming. Police officer recommended a few other devices, like SimpleSafe and Frontpoint. Canary was not on his list. Other Canary users we've been in contact with have reported same Home Mode malfunction.

Canary continues to offer no resolution.

I've had my canary for awhile and it has worked as promised. Now all the features I bought it for for are now part of a subscription service. My canary is useless now unless I pay. Please read all the negative reviews and the date they were posted. I'm not the only one upset with canary. Way to take care of the people that made you money canary!!

Dust Collectors. Useless. Don't Waste Your Money

These are pretty terrible. It's basically a scam to get you to buy memberships. The app alerts you of activity/motion but after recent updates it doesn't show any of the actual activity in the video. There is a major delay in the time the activity alert is sent so by the time you try to view a live feed of the camera it is too late. I have had connectivity issues with these as well and seem to never work when I need them to. Unless you pay a lot of money to have videos of your home hosted on an external server these things are garbage. I am unfortunately past the return period which is a shame because I wasted a lot of money on these.

Unforeseen Costs

When I purchased the device, the company highlighted the fact that the camera would feed an in-app video log with full-length videos showing the activity occurring during that time. It was on the basis of this claim that I bought the device so that I could effectively monitor my dog while at work. It worked really well for that purpose.

Until they suddenly changed the terms of their free plan. Now, I see 10-second "summaries" (this means the first 10 seconds of whatever activity occurs) of activity, which is for my purposes useless. The only solution Canary provides is the "option" to pay $10/month for the "upgrade" that restores removed functionality.

Bait and Switch by Canary

I bought this product to install outside my home. A couple of weeks after my purchase, Canary started demanding that existing users buy a subscription service in order to record motion while I'm at home (including overnight) or to view the full video captured while away. Since I work from home and bought the device primarily as a security camera to deter package theft and the like, this removed almost all value from the camera. Essentially, I felt like I'd bought a new car, only to have the dealer tell me weeks later that I'd have to pay a monthly fee in order to drive in reverse.

Fortunately, Amazon graciously allowed me to return the product for a refund. I won't be purchasing products from Canary again.

Small Price to Pay for the Sense of Security

Been very happy with our Canary System. We have a total of four devices, 2 indoors and 2 outdoors. They have been working great. No complaints. I realize it is our responsibility to sound a siren or call police when we see an intrusion, but we feel secure being away from home knowing we can always check to see what is going on, plus if anyone approaches our home or attempts entry we know about it right away. We did not have to have anyone install the system and found installation very easy. Canary also has a very good support system. I have had almost immediate answers for every question I had. I also like the fact that the devices are not hardwired into our home. If we decide to relocate, we are able to take them with us.

Misleading Company Buy Something Else

I was an early adopter, and for out of the box, it offered features that I was looking for in a security camera. Then on Sept. 28 we got an email stating the features that were advertised (on the box) are no longer included as free. More so, you had a week to join an expensive membership. When you take the features without membership, there are a number of other products that are substantially better, less expensive.

Bluntly, the company changed policy with no consideration for their existing customer base. Fortunately, Amazon gave me a "Good Will" refund on this set. I hope they can get that back from Canary because Amazon has done nothing wrong... infact, they are showing what a company does that respects their customers. Photo is of the Box where it clearly states, No Contract/Monthly Fee. You now need a $9.99 membership to access the same features that were advertised free.

Hands down the BEST bang for your buck!!!!!

I have an 8 camera HD security system and the biggest advantage of the Canary is the motion detection and live alerting system! The camera video and footage is amazing, plus to hear audio and check temperature, humidity and air quality only add to the many advantages canary offer, the the larger security camera companies. Canary also offers an audible alarm system and emergency calling features which only hit the nail on the coffin and the best security device on the market today.

I own 2 Canaries and have had them for almost a year and have never had any problems, all it's given me is peace of mind and a secure feeling that my family and loved ones are being watched.

I have recxomended this product to litterlly 20-30 people and most have purchased one without regret, I would highly recommend this product!!

First off, I see a lot of negative reviews about online features being taken away recently. I purchased my Canary after that change, so I can't speak to that. It seems like grandfathering previous users or opening some of the features back up to those folks could go a long way on that front. My review will focus on my experience:

I have owned Nest (Dropcam) cameras for years, so I'm comparing my product experience to those. I decided not to opt for the monthly payment for now, so i can see what all I'll get with no monthly cost first. To me, the options are similar to Nest, and in several areas, better. One exception is the talk-back feature, which is included free with Nest (I have never used it though).

Geo-fencing is great. Between the geo-fencing and the Away history, I have a lot less video to go through to see what's actually happened at the house. The timeline is also more useful here than with Nest, showing me status changes, as well as thumbnails for major events.

Wireless power mode is impressive - now on my fourth day off of my first charge (and i was anxious, so I don't think I even charged it all the way the first time). Curious to see how long it will go. Eventually I may run the power cord to it, but until I'm absolutely sure where it will stay, it's very portable and convenient. I also like the industrial design of this camera more than the other cameras. It looks very minimal, but unique. The magnetic base is very convenient.

On the monitoring side, the iPhone app is easy to use, and very visual. The cards approach to navigation took a few minutes to get used to, but no problem after that. Apple watch notifications are also very handy. I even get a thumbnail of the activity - convenient if I'm in a meeting and just need to see what it is. I would however like to see more functionality here - like being able to change status, start recording, or even view live video if possible right from my watch - but maybe i should just be paying more attention to the meeting I am in! :)

Overall, I'm happy with this camera. I hope Canary can solve the customer satisfaction issues they're currently having with long-time customers, because the actual product and hardware are of great quality. As a new user, I'm very happy with this camera.

Buyer beware, Canary Home Security system

It does not work as advertised. Apparently after a brief free period, the device and app will not send notifications as advertised. All I can determine is the purchasing membership is mandatory for the device to work as advertised. I've purchased two of the devices and am in the process of returning both. Client support is helpful, but not the best tin resolving problems. Item has not worked for two weeks.
