A good safe, perhaps the best option for its size and purpose
by Adam Rosenberg (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a nice safe. It works well. The programming process needs improvement. I found it difficult to get the finger print reader to record my print. After many attempts I was finally able to complete the programming process. I don't like the very expensive mounting plate they tell you to buy to make it easier to mount the safe. Its a safe! It should be easy to mount as it is. In any case, I am handy enough to buy my own bolts and wing nuts so its not a problem for me. Overall I am happy with my purchase.

Great, secure feeling safe.

I just had twin boys and I wanted to get something to keep my handgun safe before they get old enough for it to be an issue. This safe has worked out great. It was easy to program fingerprints. I did several on each hand for myself and my wife, that way in case a finger was cut or dirty or something I would always be able to get in to the safe.

Pros:
-Easy to program
-Opens VERY fast. Less than a second I would say.
-Seems very sturdy. The companies online video of people trying to pry it open was impressive.
-Has A/C adapter and 9V Battery power sources. This way you aren't using up the battery constantly and can save it for if there is a power outage.
-It's compact but big enough for a couple of handguns or misc items.
-Has mounting holes on the bottom to secure it to something. There is an optional bracket that would make it easier but I don't feel it's needed. The only issue would be getting a tool in to the safe to tighten the screws. A regular drill wouldn't fit, but a drill with a right angle attachment or some lag bolts and a socket wrench would work fine.

Cons:
-It's tricky to find the button inside to program the fingerprints. They actually attach a little ribbon to it to help you find it though, so not too big of a deal.

Fingerprint scanner totally unreliable. Good physical.
by Battlebrisket (1 out of 5 stars)

Physical security is fantastic. Sturdy construction, easy to anchor.

This is a 1-star because the fingerprint scanner is an absolute fail. Half the time the scanner doesn't register my fingerprint because I was too fast/slow, or not perfectly down the middle of the swipe space. When you have a failed scan, it blinks for a second, prohibiting additional scans; if you try again during that time period, it will refresh the failed timer. For a device that's intended to be quick access in case of emergency, this is a atrocious design decision. My wife saw me fail on this several times, and commented "If there was an intruder in here, we'd both be dead right now."

Go for a keypad-based model.

Secure Strongbox / Lockbox
by Bobby Digital (5 out of 5 stars)

This is safe is well built and secure. I am quite satisfied with it and would definitely purchase again. The biometrics do take some getting used to though. I would recommend programming from where you are going to use it, that way the angle of approach will easily replicated on the sensor. In other words if you're installing on a high shelf (reaching up) but you program it on a table at waist level (reaching across or downward) the angle at which you approach the sensor will be slightly different.

Be aware that when at idle it will take two (2) passes. The first pass awakens the sensor the second reads your print. It doesn't take long at all but be aware of that. Also the solenoid, opening actuation, is not very quiet, I wouldn't call it a racket but it is not stealthy either. It has an LED inside for low light conditions. The safe can operate on DC power via 9v battery or on AC power with a plug ( not included). I have noticed that when 9v battery runs low the sensor will not recognize my print. The first time this happened I thought the safe had dropped my prints and I cleared all the programming and I attempted to re-program. Now that I am aware of this I keep the AC plug on top so I simply plug it in and while I replace the 9v. This method prevents me from re-programming my prints every time I replace the 9v. I have noticed the my battery requires changing about once a month. I change it out when it's low not dead. In addition there is a concealed back-up lock to open with a key.

Liberty is a well-established company that builds a quality product. The safe is sturdy made of thick gauge metal and not flimsy at all. I would recommend using with the Liberty Safe Handgun Vaults Mounting Bracket. There's a lot of low caliber products out there, this is not one of them. Check out Liberty's website. They provide an outstanding product.

... saying I own other Liberty products and am generally satisfied with them
by charles m. tirone (2 out of 5 stars)

I have had this item for several months now and let me preface this review by saying I own other Liberty products and am generally satisfied with them. I wish I could give the same endorsement for this safe but I cannot. The biometric fingerprint reader is inconsistent at best and I have been forced to use the key entry on a number of occasions. Opening the unit is not a smooth operation. It is loud and the front door slaps down and slams against the underlying furniture. I have had to set it on the edge of the table and have to try to catch the door as it slaps open. It seems to me that an intruder would be alerted by the noise of the operation. Moreover after about a month the unit would only work if the ac adapter was unplugged. I contacted Liberty and the sent a new adapter which seems to have temporarily corrected that problem. Lastly I requested an extra key but the process is ridiculously complicated. I will use this to secure handguns when the grandkids are around the house but have zero faith in it working in the middle of the night if we have a forced entry into our home. I would not purchase this product again.

Though it still reads good on my battery tester
by Chris (5 out of 5 stars)

No problems at all with the fingerprint scanner. It opens up every single time unless the battery gets too weak to power the motor that opens the safe. The supplied 9v battery lasted about 6 months. Though it still reads good on my battery tester, my battery meter reveals that it doesn't have enough power to operate the motor. I recommend using the ac adapter as a primary power source and the battery as a back up. From what i have read and what I know through personal experience with this safe, weak batteries could be the cause for many of the problems people are claiming are due to the fingerprint scanner.

One of the better handgun safes available.
by Handgun Safe Research (2 out of 5 stars)
September 5, 2016

As of 2019, Handgun Safe Research is limiting reviews to two stars for all handgun safes fitted with locks that can be opened using inexpensive and readily available tools. The lock installed on the Liberty HDX-250 is a cheap tubular lock. YouTube is currently loaded with video showing how easily these locks can be opened, and tubular lock picks can be purchased through any online lock-pick resource.

Since I first examined one of these safes in September of 2016, Liberty Safe has addressed the security issues I found. I cover the improvements in the video posted here. If you own an earlier version of this safe, you can learn about my previous findings at HandgunSafeResearch.com.

Abut the biometrics: These electronic components are made in China, and though the technology is improving the components are relatively low-end, consumer-grade electronics. That means you can expect quality-control problems with a certain number of safes, though I don't have an exact percentage to offer. The electronic components don't meet anything like military-grade standards. So, what can you expect? If you get two to three years of solid performance from the biometric components installed on a handgun safe, you got your money's worth. Remember that the accuracy of these devices is far better than 50% but less than 100%.

Now I feel Safe
by Jerome M. Crowley (5 out of 5 stars)

I had been wanting some small safe that I could hide under a skirted table next to the bed - one that would allow me to leave a loaded 40 Cal. semi-automatic inside - and one that only I could get into with a fingerprint. Oh yes, there is a key that I keep in a different area of our home - one that my grown kids are aware of so they could open the safe and get the gun if I wasn't around anymore . Now, I don't expect to ever have to use it, but after 46 years in police work, I prefer to be prepared rather than sorry!

Inconsistent opening
by JPK (1 out of 5 stars)

I purchased this item 9 months ago (May 2016) after reading reviews on it and many other similar gun vaults. At first I was very impressed with it. But after about 2 months I noticed it wasn't always reading my or my wife's fingerprints. It usually took several (over 5) swipes to open it and often not even then. Also, the battery wears out VERY quickly. If you buy this vault, use the AC adapter! But even then it doesn't always read your fingerprints and you need to swipe several times to open it. Someone else mentioned that it would be a good idea to place the vault where it will always be before registering your fingerprints due to the angle you are accessing it from. I vehemently second that notion! Doing that helped in my situation, but it still does not open consistently. ~~~ REVISION/ADDENDUM ~~~ I've now owned it two weeks less than a year and I have more problems with it than before. Now it won't open at all with the fingerprint scanner and it won't even let me re-enroll my fingerprints! (I've got to use the key if I want to open it - how feasible is that in the middle of the night when there is an intruder in the house?) I'd like to give it more than 1 star, but unless and until it opens first time, every time I'll stick with just 1 star vs 5.

Hopefully will work better with practice. Disappointed in this for reliability.
by Mikel1976 (4 out of 5 stars)

I shopped extensively for this safe. I read alot of reviews on many different biometric safes. I was optimistic about this one, but I have to say that I'm a little disappointed. I'd say it works about half the time. I'm going to keep practicing swiping my finger, but so far I don't think I can rely on this in an emergency. The other bummer is that if you swipe and it fails, it makes you wait about 5-10 seconds before allowing you to try again. So if someone is breaking into your home and you are panicked, there's quite a good chance you will not have the presence of mind to correctly open your safe. Everything else is as described. It's a good size and I like that it plugs in. When you successfully scan a finger it opens quickly. It's a solid safe, but If I can't get it to work reliably with practice, I'll have to put my gun back in the combination safe.
