Leatherman Signal:An Outdoorsman's Review
by Amazon Customer (2 out of 5 stars)
April 3, 2017

I wish I could really praise the Leatherman Signal...this multi-tool to me just was too flawed for me.You get so excited when an innovative multi-tool comes out yet the Signal turned out to be probably the biggest let down...let's call it 'problematic'.
*The tent hammer was a neat idea but...fell short in it's design. While we set up camp I decided to handle pitching the tents.I got to the third tent and kept hearing a slight tapping.I had this handle closed with the security switch to keep the handles closed by the way.I open up the handles and a screw for one of the replaceable 154cm wire-cutters falls out...along with the wire-cutter.The other wire cutter didn't fall out but other was a good bit of play.So obviously the transferred shock from the tent hammer strikes were loosening those wire-cutters screws. In my youth we used a rock...this tent hammer didn't pan so out well through as assembled parts function without things coming loose.
*The ferro rod I knew didn't have the diameter of one I take hiking all the time...but made the most of it.Flat out it was annoying to use.Plastic covers the sides and you have to be careful in those short strokes as it's much easier to cut your finger or knuckle of your thumb. The whistle works just fine though.
*The sharpener works so-so/okay...it's beneficial to those serrations.Once again the worthless rock gave me for length to sharpen the blade with and responded faster.Or heck buy an EZE Lap...they're size efficient for your backpack. This short sharpener I'm going to say is for a common blade steel that's only lightly dull.
*I've read a few others reviews saying that they wish the Signal was in a better blade steel. To me Leatherman's 420HC has always been good to me.It sharpens up in snap and cuts very well.In outdoors use it holds a good edge for traditional knife use and sharpness quality with is important to some as a fishing/hunting/camping steel.I guess some are envisioning a high-speed wear resistant steel like 154CM or brittle S30V...steels that take some time to sharpen up...not good for field use.My vision of a better upgrade steel for Leatherman?...any grade of Sandvik Steel.Delivers a breathtaking sharpness in tune with the 420HC and 1095 Carbon Steel...and a bit harder edged than 420HC.That is a rational sense of upgrade in edge retention for any multi-tool user who doesn't want to stray too far from what they like about 420HC in general. But I knew the Signal had a 420HC blade and wanted it over some high-end steel.
*A good suggestion to Leatherman is to satin-finish the internal tools full-time (liked they used to) versus a part-time trait (on select models). This stainless steel in a bead blast finish just doesn't resist the elements very well.If these were made from carbon steel I'd say make a note to oil it...but doing this finish on stainless?I'm tiring of looking at the rust.Surely that oxidation can't be good for the clip-wire for the screwdriver bit adapter.

Bottom Line:

Now I'll throw a few bones to the Signal on certain things.Yes the pocket clip...great idea....makes it desireable like the Skeletool.Yes this is sleek and probably equal in width to the Original Wave though a bit thinner. But it seems through this stripped down approach of the Signal...things weren't thought through all the way. Some might rebuttal and say 'yeah but this would be golden in one's emergency bag'.I'd say save the $98 and get a multi-tool that has what you need and shop around at ferro rods and a sharpener for your bag. When I first got the Leatherman Signal probably after 20 minutes of observing it carefully my thoughts went on 4-stars.Taking it camping and what I experienced on it compared to it's cost?...it's riding a thin line between 1 and 2 stars as a Leatherman product...it should cost only $50 for as flawed as it is

nice concept, disappointing quality
by Amir Navot (2 out of 5 stars)

The concept is great. Good selection of tools at a reasonable weight. However the implementation is disappointing. Tools opening is not smooth and requires a lot of force. The one-hand opening hole on the blade has pretty sharp edge that make it unpleasant to operate. Pulling out the owl or the can opener is hard and tricky. The saw is a bit too short to really be useful - and the funny thing is that it seems that wouldn't be hard to make it a bit longer. For a saw like this every millimeter in length makes a huge difference. The blade itself is solid and the small sharpener is great (tried it on my old Skeletool SX and could make it sharp again very quickly)

Excellent product.

Great product made by a reliable company. This is my second Leatherman tool and I am very happy with it. This tool feels great and is comfortable to hold and use. It is super function-able. The fero rod is small but for a survival item I think it would work fine in a pinch. I like that tools are accessible without having to open the pliers. Highly recommend this for hikers, backpackers, survivalist, etc.

Everything about this multi-tool is extremely useful. Whether you are an avid woodsman or just someone who likes to be prepared, this is a perfect tool for you. I love the capabilities of other leatherman's such as the wave however, it doesn't include a pocket clip which makes it difficult to a carry around unless you utilize a holster or simply carry it in your pocket. This was the perfect answer to my conundrum. Although it is a bit on the heavy side I find that it just disappears in my pocket while carrying. It has all of the most important functions that I need including the knife, wire stripper, bottle opener, and of course the world famous Leatherman pliers. Any additional questions feel free to ask, I will respond as soon as I can.

Great Tool for Just About Everything

Leatherman is my brand of choice. I got this to replace my old "Skeletool" I used for years which when I broke the pliers off doing something stupid at work.

This is basically an upgrade for me. I keep it on me while at work (I'm a maintenance guy) and find I use the pliers, wire cutters, knife, saw, hammer and bit driver the most. Saving me time taking a trip down to the shop where all our tools are kept.

It also comes with a carrying case but I find the built in belt clip works just as good, making it a little less cumbersome and easier to get to.

I love this Leatherman multitool

I love this Leatherman multitool. It looks good, it's well made and the fact I can add different tools to it makes it even more desirable. I recommend this tool to anyone. The only reason I didn't give a five star is because of the sheath or pouch. More particularly the loop which is very small. My belts are 1" to 1.5" thick, because of how small the loop is they won't fit. The same thing happens with the heavy duty tactical belt I have. Other then that it's a great tool to have

The ULTIMATE Survival EDC multitool!!!
by N7 Samurai Zero (5 out of 5 stars)
October 15, 2018

This multitool is the ultimate survival multitool, in my opinion, that provides tools for both the outdoor and urban environment for both primary and backup survival use.

The ferro stick/whistle combo and knife sharpener seems gimmicky, but those will work in an emergency. I use a Sparkr Mini as my primary lighter and as my secondary flashlight. I use my Note9 as my primary flashlight. My North Face Recon backpack has a built in whistle for signaling. I also have my primary knife sharpener in that bag.

I use the pliers on this significantly as well as the hammer, can opener, and Phillips head. I also enjoy opening my Corona beer with the carabiner style bottle opener. However, this thing lacks a scissor. So, I like to complement this tool with my Leatherman Style CS because the scissors and the tweezers are just excellent on those.

Together, these two tools weigh only about 9oz, which is amazingly light. I like to place these two in the two front pockets of my Yellowbirch Outfitters PockIt EDC Organizer (Modern). In the zipper side of that pouch, I store the Sparkr Mini and a Zebra F-301 Compact Pen. I place this organizer in my front right pocket, which isn't that bulky or heavy.

Furthermore, this multitool, in my opinion, is the best multitool I've ever owned in my life. Leatherman really impressed me with this one. I highly recommend pairing this with the Style CS. This duo multitool will make most everyday or survival situation that much easier. What are you waiting for? Buy these two now here on Amazon! 😁

You will not regret this purchase!

Got this for father's day, and this thing is sweet.

I've used mine pretty much everyday, and the only complaint is that the ferrocerium rod doesn't seem like it's replaceable. I know one day this will be ground off from use, and it'll be useless.

The emergency whistle is pretty amazing haha... Scared a buddy with it a couple times.

You will not regret this purchase. This is my first full size leatherman tool, and it won't be my last.

Works just fine! I use it on my solo camping trips
by S Adams. (4 out of 5 stars)

Works just fine! I use it on my solo camping trips. Its much lighter than your standard Leatherman. It doesn't weigh enough to be ultralight but somewhere in between.

Cons:

Whistle, ferro rod and "like" diamond sharpener seem a little cheap and gimmicky. Also they fit kind of loosely within handle. Not enough for them to fall out but seems like they could have secured them a bit better.

useful but not worth the $
by saabfanatic (3 out of 5 stars)

as a lover of the wingman and wanting more usable features i got this, im disapointed at the price point because unlike the cheaper pocket clip models this signal does not have spring tension or magnetized pliers (?) the replaceable wire cutters are a nice feature, and having a saw is more useful than scissors, the bit driver is also very useful with the additional purchase of a bd set, the fire starter works, and having a sharpener on a knife is a brilliant idea. im very confused with the carabiner, why? who clips their leatherman to anything? it already has a pocket clip and a sheath... i guess for the skeletool guys who wanted more? whatever, the hammer is a useful feature and the emergency whistle is a cool maybe i'll need it some day thing. overall im happy, going to keep it but confused by the choice of features, its as if they didn't ask what leatherman users wanted in a striped down pocket sized wave, but went with what the office guys thought were the best selling features.
