Pure junk considering it doesn't last. I've bought 3 in total, with all three lasting less than one year. Forget about customer service. Read all the other reviews. They basically try to wear you out on the process. They will try to "troubleshoot" the problems on the phone with you until you grow grey hair before they will let you return it for repair or replacement. Oh, and don't bother with any sort of extended warranty on Amazon by Asurion, since theirs doesn't kick in until the crappy 2 year manufacturer's warranty expires. Here's the setup: Buy a Botvac D80 by Neato for $400-$500. Buy an additional insurance policy extending the warranty for 3 more years. Assume you have spent around $450-$550 of your hard earned dollars to have the assurance you will have the peace of mind of a vacuum cleaner that will almost completely vacuum your home for you for the next 5 years. Reality, you bought a piece of junk that will make you happy for around a year or less, you will be frustrated to death with their poor customer service and lack of true warranty. You will sit waiting for the next year for your warranty to expire so you can begin the fight with Asurion to play the same "attempt to diagnose it by phone" and attempt to find reasons your situation disqualifies you from receiving the warranty extension you paid for. In the end you will have spent money to be terribly frustrated and dissatisfied. I hope your short term gains Neato, are heavily offset by enough bad publicity about your crappy quality, warranty, and customer service. What goes around comes around. You can't play unfair forever without it catching up. The 1-stars are growing.

Am I glad we did
by John W (5 out of 5 stars)

We had been looking at robot vacs since they first came out but with a dog and a cat and the mixed reviews and expense we just kept waiting. Am I glad we did. We had a bunch of cash back sitting on one of our AMEX cards and found the D80 on sale for $100 less than MSRP so decided to risk it (essentially free - thank you American Express!).

So very glad we bought this - I love, Love, LOVE this robot! Between Neato and our Amazon Echo it feels like living in the Jetsons (maybe someday they will integrate?).

You might see the price on these dropping since Neato just announced a new version with Bluetooth and an improved battery. Based on what I read I don't think we are missing anything for the extra $200 they are talking about when it is released. Admittedly the controls could be better (and will be on the Bluetooth model) but once Neato is set up you really don't need to mess with the controls again.

If you are good without a remote get the D80. The D85 comes with extra replacement filters but is usually too expensive to justify the price difference. Compare them before you buy and decide for yourself. Replacement filters are available on Amazon and Neato is talking about an improved filter with the next bot release.

I was always concerned about the bin getting full quickly on any of bot vac because of the pet hair. Another Amazon reviewer showed how much pet hair his Neato picked up in one pass and I was impressed enough to give it a try. Let me tell you, Neato really packs in the pet hair! It's better than my stick vac.

The first day Neato cleaned the house without any help. It navigated around the dining room table and chairs and the stools at the breakfast bar flawlessly (which just blew me away). It goes under places I never expected (and better than I do with a stick vac).

Day one it missed some pet hair dust bunnies in some corners of the house it couldn't reach (to tight for Neato to get in). No surprise - we have a few odd corners that I figured any robot couldn't get to. A few days later it seemed like there was less pet hair in one of those corners. Guess what? A few days after that ALL those odd corners were clean - no pet hair!. How? Why? Magic! A little experimenting and I figured it out.

Neato turns frequently. If it gets into a tight space it will back out, pivot around 180 degrees and head out. When it did that near the areas it couldn't reach, Neato's back exhaust was powerful enough to blow the dust bunnies out to other parts of the room. If Neato didn't catch it the same day (because it had already gone over that area) it picks it up the next day. A few stray dust bunnies sure beats drifts of pet hair around the house - especially since I don't need to do the vacuuming

Took me a few days to figure out Neato wouldn't go under the bed because it thought the bed skirt was an obstacle. I decided I'd rather have clean than decorative so I tucked the bed skirt up on one side and Neato zoomed under and no more dust bunnies and pet hair under the bed. You can tuck just one side of the bed skirt up and Neato will clean all under the bed without a problem. You don't even need to tuck the whole bed skirt up, just a handful tucked up is enough for Neato to find it's way under the bed and clean,

However under the bed was the first place Neato got stuck when I wasn't home. I came home to a freaked out dog and cat and a distant beeping. Neato got tangled in the electrical cords under the bed and couldn't get out. The instructions DO warn about this possibility but after several days without a problem I figured we were ok.

Neato had shut itself off except for a mournful beeping and a display message asking for help. Aside from the dog and cat freaking out from the beeping not a big deal. I freed it up and tried the magnetic border that was included but Neato kept moving the boarder. I tired weighing the border with something and still didn't help. Finally I just shoved some boxes under the bed in front of the cords and this kept Neato out of harms way.

The weird part of this is we have a refrigerator that has a surface that scratches easily (don't get me started on how we learned that or what it took to fix what one fridge magnet did). I put the magnetic strip down by the fridge and Neato glides by every time without a problem. So you might have hit or miss luck with the boarder also.

When the nephew moved out we found one of his socks under the bed when Neato got caught on it so if you are one of those people who leaves stuff laying around the house this can be a problem. Again, once I freed it up, Neato went on it's merry way.

Let's talk about the battery. Neato has very specific instructions about conditioning the battery which I religiously followed. Neato is able to do our 1600 square foot single level house in one pass in about 1.75 hours on one charge. Getting stuck seems to use up a lot of battery. Both times Neato cleaned for a while then suddenly shut down it's vacuum and started silently heading for it's home base to recharge. A message on the display explained what it was doing. A bit awkward to read it while following it (I didn't want to disturb it's route as I wanted to see what it would do). Once it was charged up again, off it went a started where it left off and finished up a few minutes later.

It's cool to watch Neato sidle up to it's home base. We did have an incident where Neato committed suicide. The socket Neato's home base is plugged into for charging is a bit loose. After several days of working fine, one day Neato managed to pull the plug for it's charging station / home base loose and we didn't notice so it didn't get a charge. The next time is started cleaning it headed home for a fresh charge after just a few minutes. I thought the battery wad fried but when I looked at the charge indicator it wasn't doing anything. That's when I investigated and discovered the plug had been pulled loose by Neato running over the cord. Easy fix, moved the cord near the wall out of the way and no problems since. It would be nice to have an led on top of the home base indicating it's plugged in but now that I figured it out it will probably never happen again.

There have been a few other incidents were Neato got stuck and drained it's battery. For some reason occasionally it gets trapped under one of the breakfast bar stools. I came home and found them moved and thought that was odd. I watched and finally found it getting stuck. It acts like a trapped animal or like Herby the luv bug (for those of you that remember that movie). After a minute or so Neato gets free but moves the stool in the process. This also drains the battery.

Freaking out the human - one day I came home, found Neato safe on his home base (as it usually is). I emptied the dust bin and went about my day. I noticed the breakfast stools had been moved but didn't think about it. A little while later, Neato started up and scared the 'bleep' out of me. Neato hadn't finished cleaning so off it went like a dutiful servant and finished up once his battery was charged again.

One time it didn't quite get home and stopped about a foot in front of it's base so I assumed it got stuck somewhere and drained it's battery. I placed it on it's base and it was fine. In the three weeks we have had Neato this has only happened once.

I have to devote a section to pet treats. Both the dog and cat tend to be hoarders. Neato found every cat treat that our little furry friend had hidden away - they showed up one or two at a time in the dust bin. Dog's treat are two big for Neato to pick up but fortunately our dog tends to drop his by his bowl. It's not a big deal to pick them up and throw them in his food dish when we see them.

Let's talk dust bin. I empty it every day as recommended. Not a big deal. I use the included comb to clean out the filter (easy) and every now and then use an air can duster to blow it clean. Spending 5 minutes a day on this simple task is a great tradeoff for having a clean house to come home to everyday and not having to vacuum myself. I keep the comb near a trash can with a q-tip and give the bottom sensors a quick wipe with the q-tip as recommended. Easy!

Ok, this next bit is a bit embarrassing because I had no idea the house was this dirty. I knew we were overdue for a vacuuming (it had been a few weeks) but I decided, let's see what Neato can do with a somewhat dirty house. The first day the dust bin was packed with pet fur (just like the other reviewer's pictures showed) and the house looked great! Except one area rug (more on that later). As mentioned before, every day there were less dust-pet fur bunnies and the dust bin was packed full. After three weeks the pet fur finally seems to be less packed so Neato must have searched-and-found most of it by now.

Ten years ago I had some surgery (before we were married) and hired a housekeeper to come in once a week to vacuum, do laundry, etc. The house is cleaner now than it was then! Neato is better than hired staff!

Neato did something weird but understandable. We have three bookshelves that the bottom shelf is flat on the ground. Neato climbs the lower shelf and vacuums all the way up to the books. The first time I saw this I almost had a heart attack because I built that bookcase with my grandfather 40 some years ago. No problem. Neato didn't leave a mark.

Neato has a hard plastic 'bumper' as part of the casing (made of the same material). We have a lot of antiques handed down from my family and I was dubious about turning Neato loose to crash into these. No problem. A gentle bump and Neato backs off and moves away. It's a bit rough when it gets stuck on the kitchen stools which I got at Wal-Mart but it's never left a mark on those either.

One area rug picks up all the pet hair and seems to trap it until we vacuum. Neato went over it without a great dal of improvement. I was a bit disappointed but given the rest of the house looked good I figured I could live with one 3' x 5' rug that I would have to vacuum myself. After three weeks and Neato getting a little more off it every day the area rug now look like we just pulled out the upright. Way to go Neato!

I thought the spinning side brush was pretty cool. I was disappointed that there wasn't one on each side (seems obvious to me). The brush got stuck somehow between the floor mat under the treadmill and the tile floor and popped off. I was able to find it easily enough and pop it back on. The side brush is held on magnetically and seems designed to pop off in these situations. The replacement brushes are cheap so I was thinking about keeping a few extras around in case we lost one. A few days after we got Neato, it started making this horrible racket. A little playing around and I figured out removing the side brush stopped the noise and didn't impact how Neato performed. I considered returning Neato but after a few days decided we could live without the side brush and expense of replacing these periodically.

I was worried the edges would be cleaned well and was resigned to getting out the upright and running the hose along the edges of the carpet. So far does not seem needed. Maybe before company comes over or my mother-in-law visits :) I'll get the edges but for everyday we seem to be fine with Neato.

Other reviewers have talked about the brushes, filters, etc. so I'm not going into all that.

We find Neato pretty quiet on carpet, louder on hard floors but no worse than any vacuum. Since Neato can be paused by pushing a button on top and will resume by pushing the buttons again this is not a big deal. If I am on the phone, the person on the other end can't hear Neato but I can't hear them so I just pause Neato until I am off the phone or go into another room,

Side brush or not, Neato simply can't get all the crumbs around the coffee table legs on the carpet. No problem - just move the coffee table a few inches and let Neato do it's thing. Or get the upright out - either way seems decadently lazy and I love it (oh, the problems we have in our lives) .

I am so glad we waited for a good vacuum to finally be made. We know to many people how have tried other ones and been disappointed (including our minister who actually worked her disappointment with a different bot-vac into her sermon the week we got ours - we haven't told her about ours yet).

Neato's engineers should win an award for brilliance. I have NEVER had a vacuum that is so easy to maintain. The brush pops on and off easily for cleaning and if you get any string or long hairs wrapped around the brush, the filter cleaning tool has a built in cutter to handle it. I would love to meet the person who came up with these ideas!

If you have been waiting for any reason - wait no more. Grab one, you won't regret it.

Thank you Neato for making a product that actually works as expected and better.

Works well, but breaks often and the extended warranty is worthless. Wouldn't buy in hindsight.

Bought this vacuum in late 2015. It does a great job when it runs, but it needs a fix here and there. The first year was simple: call in and ask - usually the fix was simple.

We bought it with an extended warranty, but when late 2016 happened and we had to switch to the other warranty, the vacuum needed to be sent in. So we sent it in Jan 2017 and now it's almost May and we can't get our vacuum back - the password reset doesn't even work on the website of the warranty you buy off amazon. We try to call in and get non-answers. I don't fault Neato for that, but if you need to consider the risk that you won't have a working vacuum after a year and will be on your own. Most of the fixes pre-2017 were simple, but we still had to ask for advice because they weren't obvious. I think the risk is high you will need help and I'm not sure the value of the vacuum for a year is worth it.

Update2: It's May. We got the vacuum back, but it doesn't work. So we have to now 1. get our money back for paying for the repairs 2. find a way to deal with squaretrade and 3. keep living without the robotic vacuum we paid money for a couple of years ago. My partner agrees that he wouldn't buy this in hindsight either.

Downgraded to 2 stars- see saga below.

Original Review from October 2017: I absolutely love my Neato Botvac D80. Having done some research, the Botvac was supposed to be really good for handling pet hair, or which we have plenty in our 3 cat/2 dog household. I was also gifted a iRobot Roomba. So here's my review and a bit of a comparison after 3 weeks of operating them side by side (on different floors of our house but same surface types). The Neato Botvac does an absolutely bang-up job on vacuuming up pet hair. the little bin is full every day. To that end, I kind of wish it had a bigger bin, but I clean it every day and it appears to be doing a good job keeping up on the house. It does a great job on corners, also. Like any robotic vacuum, you have to keep the floor clear of things that could get sucked up by mistake- socks, the corner of blanket, lighter weight power cords, stuff like that. If it does get stuck or suck something up it shouldn't, it shuts itself down and emits a chime to let you know where in the house it is so you can find it and fix the problem. By comparison, the one time the Roomba picked up something it shouldn't have, it just continued to try and vacuum it up. The Botvac is a little louder than the Roomba. And the dust bin is a little bit harder to clean (because you have to pull out the filter rather than just pop open the door) but the dust bin on the Botvac is larger. Between the two, the Botvac is the more capable of the two units.

UPDATE 11/25/2017: So the Neato performed flawlessly for about 3 weeks. We have a new house and we finally got internet service about a week ago, and the day after we got internet service, the Neato started having issues. It would start running into a wall over and over and over, not trying to turn itself around. if you moved it, it would go right back to the same wall and start running into it again. But then after the next charge-up, it didn't do that anymore, and would run fine. Then the next time it might vacuum the same spot over and over for like 5 minutes before moving on. But other than that, run fine. Then the next time, no problems. Then the next time, it would operate fine except when it would go back to its charging base it would stop about 8" away and say it was docked. It's still doing a fantastic job vacuuming, but it definitely has some issues. Is the wi-fi interfering with it somehow? Did it download a virus? I have no idea. Maybe the fact that it operated flawlessly until we got wi-fi is a complete coincidence. It requires more babysitting now, but it's still doing a relatively good job. I'm dropping the rating from 5 star to 4 star due to the additional babysitting it requires. I would also point out that the Roomba has had no similar problems in the same time period.

Update: 2/14/2018: I have downgraded the Neato Botvac D80 to 2-stars. Why? Well, on Jan 24 it stopped working. It still turns on, it'll roll out from it's base...and then, nothing. I have done all the troubleshooting. Cleaned it inside and out. Worked with Neato customer service. Watched videos on YouTube of people with the same error code. Finally I went to Neato and began conversing about getting this repaired or replaced as it's not even 6 months old and still under warranty. And two weeks later I'm STILL waiting on Neato to send me an RMA. The customer service agent I worked with asked me the same questions over and over and over and when I made sure that the answer to every question was in the final email (with proof of purchase and a ton of photos of the unit inside and out) he told me he had what he needed to issue an RMA. And I've never heard from him again. I've emailed him 3 additional times. I called Neato and another agent told me he'd fast tracked it. The upshot of this is- I love the Neato D80 when it's working. But to me, because I am in customer service myself, a company is only as good as how they handle a problem. And for now, I am NOT impressed with Neato not resolving my problem I'm about ready to escalate either to Amazon or to my credit card company directly. It's a real bummer because the performance of the Neato is so much better than the Roomba...when it's working. It sucks up at least twice the dog hair. It covers the floor area better. The Roomba I pretty much have to follow along behind and clean up behind it. I never had to do that with the Neato. So I'm pretty heartbroken about the crap customer service from Neato. I'm hoping they fix this so I can delete this update, honestly.
3/16/2018- Ok, so Neato FINALLY came through on warranty. After speaking with a third person at Neato (because the first guy pulled a disappearing act and would never email me back and the second guy didn't fast track things like he said he would) he went to a supervisor and got authorization to issue me an RMA which I got that day. I shipped the defective unit back, 2 weeks later I received the replacement unit which thus far is working flawlessly. I seriously missed a working Neato in the 6 weeks this took, because no matter how hard it worked my Roomba simply could not handle the main floor of our house. I had to help it by dust mopping every couple of days, and using my upright occasionally. Also, no matter what Roomba says, I'm seriously skeptical that its random vacuuming pattern is as effective as the Neato's logical grid pattern of vacuuming. I know this review is getting long, but I think it's fair for people to see the good, the bad and the ugly in order to evaluate a potential purchase.
7/30/18- So last week this replacement Botvac D80 vacuum I received in March began malfunctioning. A different issue this time- now it rotates between telling me it needs me to turn it's switch to on (when it's already on- so I have to turn it off then back on again) and then telling me its battery is low and needs to charge. Rinse and repeat. It will not run, will not vacuum. As stated previously- I LOVE this vacuum...when it works. But in the exact same time period, the Roomba has had zero problems. None. Other than replace filters, it has required no maintenance. The D80 went through a brush in 4 months (the good brushes are expensive) and I've had two units become non-functional on me. It's still within warranty period so I expect Neato will either assist me in fixing it or they will replace it like last time, but it took them 2 months last time and that's a long time to try and get things fixed. I just find that the Neato is simply not reliable. I would not buy another one, at this point.

100% Regret...
by Timothy (1 out of 5 stars)
January 31, 2018

Don't buy...

Update June 2019.

A supervisor decided that they will do a one time exemption of the warranty since I've had sooooooo many issues. I guess we'll see how it goes this time...

Update May 2019.

Wheel broken, like a grinding sound when trying to rotate, and their response is that I have to pay out of pocket to have it fixed. Looking at Roombas now...

Update April 2019.

They sent me ANOTHER BRAND NEW one and now it's speaker is going out. Guess what, it's out of the 90 day warranty they give you on the replacement item... SMH.

Update Nov 2018

Changed from 5 stars down to one. The last one that was sent to me quit working... it lasted A whole 4 months... This one is doing the whole put me on the ground message and the speaker went out again. Does not beep when stuck or when the bin is full. Yes I ensured the bin full alert was turned on in the settings. It has been a week since first contacting customer service and am yet to get a reply. Emailing daily. I am done with this. So infuriating.

Update July 2018:

Wheel ended up messing up to where it always said to put it on the ground. Quick and easy customer service that got us prepaid postage to send it back and received a new one very quickly. Again, awesome product and customer service.

UPDATE 5.14.18

Neato started beeping all of the time so I contacted their customer service. They trouble shot and found the issue, battery going bad, the same day and sent out a replacement. It was up and running again within 1.5 weeks including shipping.

EXCELLENT customer service.

Original:

Love it. Had a roomba 880 for several years and it was disappointing. It finally broke and I decided to try something new. This actually does what I assumed the roomba would. It actually cleans the house AND returns to the charging station. It knows which hallway to go down to charge. Highly recommend.

Stupid Bot Loses its Mind and Damages Property
by Mary B (1 out of 5 stars)
November 6, 2018

When looking for robot vacuum cleaners, we took into consideration that our cat likes to shed. After reading a lot of reviews, we bought 2 of these thinking we'd save a lot of time and backaches by not having to haul a vacuum cleaner up and down stairs around the house. And the squared-corner shape led us to believe it would clean well in corners. Instead, it turns out we bought lots of frustration and backaches.

I'll start with the fact that the bots ignore the Neato magnetic boundaries we laid out for them. They just go crashing into whatever they want, regardless that we put those boundaries down. So far, they've only damaged my dining table and chairs, 2 occasional tables and a few other items of furniture (leave the chairs around your dining table, and it will get itself stuck in the legs, etc. and crash around until either it finds its way out or it chirps until you rescue it). There are places where this thing has chipped the finishes off my furniture! Instead of saving us time, now we go around the house before vacuum time is scheduled, removing furniture from its path to prevent further damage. Convenient, right?

And it's not just my table and chair legs damage the Neato Botvac damages. It's also managed to scratch my Brazilian cherry floors -- and that's only going to cost me a few thousand dollars to refinish. Thanks, Neato.

Then there's its propensity for getting stuck EVERYWHERE. . Yes, it does the vacuuming for me.... but I have to move a lot of furniture in order for it to not get stuck. That furniture I can't move.... like my bed -- is where I have the most trouble with it. The bot will just STOP DEAD underneath the center of the bed for no apparent reason and I'll have to crawl underneath it to get it out. With 9-inch clearance underneath that bed, there's nothing to impede its way. I think these bots just lose their little robot minds. And if I press the menu, it starts up cleaning again as if nothing happened. Nothing, that is, except it lost its mind again and goes back to clean where it already went twice.

And battery life is really, really bad. I've already bought several of those in the 2 years since I bought the bots. I wonder if one of the reasons for that is that the bots just can't seem to remember where they've been and re-vacuum the same areas over and over. Or they'll spin in place. The battery runs down completely before cleaning a 400 square foot area. And then it starts its annoying chirping to stop you from whatever else you may be doing to dump the dirt from the bin. Or it stops a foot from its charging pad and just sits there. And then it will chirp until you either lose your mind or put it on its charging station.

Another issue with these bots is the noise level when it's running. It's loud enough to keep one from enjoying a conversation in the same room.

So, after 2 years of backaches from moving furniture and headaches from the frustration of dealing with these bots, they're history. I bought bots by a different manufacturer to replace them, and so far I'm happy because the Roombas I bought are quieter, they don't slam into my furniture chipping off the finishes -- they just do their jobs and go back to their charging stations like good little bots. And they clean better than the Neato did.

Neato - very disappointing, Asurion - A+
by Djw2016 (2 out of 5 stars)
April 6, 2018

I bought this vac in 2016 and it was my 2nd Neato. I had nothing but problems with my first Neato pet/allergy (the purple and gray one). Constant error messages, replaced wheel motors, battery issues, motor failures, etc. At first Neato's customer service was great. Problems?? We'll send you a new one. No worries. Even after the manufacturer's warranty on my first Neato they were helpful and willing to work with me, This Neato, not so much. I swear on the 366th day of ownership they act like they don't know you. For me that clearly says they don't stand behind their products. I have done extensive research on robot vacs and Neatos specifically. One of the online forums I follow (a cool guy named Vik) who is very knowledgeable about the field told me he felt the D80 was a much improved model, with many of the kinks worked out. So I went ahead with the $500 purchase, because like I said, when they work, they are life changing. But this time was smart and bought the Asurion extended warranty, which also had mixed reviews. So now I will tell you about my experience with Neato's Botvac D-80. When these little guys work, they are amazing. They make your life better, literally. They pick up dog hair every day, so when you get home you're black clothes, socks, dark colored furniture is soooo much less - well, hairy. I have a lab, she sheds. A LOT. I programmed it to run every day except Sunday. Because, why not give the little guy a rest on the Lord's Day. It worked great for about a year and a day. I swear these things know when the manufacturer's warranty runs out and then they start misbehaving. So...I contacted Asurion and they sent me a shipping label, with instructions to ship it back to them for repair or reimbursement of purchase price. Long story short and about 2 weeks of diagnostics, part ordering, and attempts to fix my little guy they said "We're sorry, but your vacuum is not fixable, and we will refund your purchase price of $500 and change. Thank goodness they didn't give me grief about it, because I would have lost my s***. Within 2 hours I had an amazon gift card for the full purchase amount emailed to me. Will I buy another Neato? Yes, only because my life sucks without one, and Roomba and iRobot just don't perform as well as Neato on thick carpets. And only with an extended warranty. Like I said, when they work they are amazing. When they don't you want to rip your hair out, except for the fact that you'd then have to get out your dinosaur of a manual vacuum and then vacuum up said hair. I just feel like these vacuums are too expensive to only work for a year. 2 things Neato corp needs to work on...Customer service (they had great service at one point - bring it back), and longevity and dependability of their products. That's three but you get the idea. Caveat Emptor and get yourself an extended warranty.

RETURNED!

I have had 2 other Neatos - an XV and a Botvac 80 (not a D80, the old Botvac 80). My XV recently died after 6 years of service, so I was looking to replace it with another Neato. Having had great results from my Botvac 80 (which has been in service for about 4 years at this time) I decide to replace the XV with a D80. What a shock to find out how inferior the D80 is compared to the Botvac 80, or even the XV.

First - the D80 does not have the LED charge indicators around the start button. The only way to know if it's charging is to push the start clean button to power up the display then check to see if the battery indicator is showing that it's charging. Not a major problem, but definitely an annoyance.

Second - the D80 seemed incapable of navigating around/under furniture in my bedroom. It got stuck in places that neither of the other Neatos ever got stuck, and even after placing the magnetic strips in those places to restrict it, it would still seem confused in those areas, spinning around and around, backing up over and over again. Then for no apparent reason, decided to stop exactly in the center under my king sized bed, not once but every time it cleaned. The D80 literally would not move for more than 90 seconds before getting stuck somewhere or just simply sitting in one place running with a message that said "Press OKAY to continue". This experience was repeated each of the 3 times I tried to get it to clean these rooms over 3 days.. It was ridiculous! If I have to sit and baby the thing around my rooms - rooms in which the XV and Botvac 80 have navigated without issues for numerous years - then I might as well pull the Shark out of the closet and vacuum it myself! Having become completely aggravated by it's inability to navigate a walk-in closet, bathroom and bedroom on the first floor, I decided to switch the Botvac 80 from upstairs with this one on the main floor. Which lead too ...

Third - after placing the D80 upstairs to cover an Office, 2 bedrooms, a hallway and a bathroom, I let it fully charge before checking to see if it could navigate the second floor (which has only minimal furniture that it can go under). From the Office where the charger is located, it left it's dock, moved around the perimeter of the room halfway, then started it's zig-zag pattern of cleaning. Once it finished the first section of the room, it then navigated the rest of the perimeter of the room until it reached the closet door - where it spun round and round, back and forth, round and round, turning on the blade brush then turning off the blade brush, over and over again. After 90 minutes of this it had used up most of the battery so it needed to go recharge - which it did successfully. When it completed charging it went right back to the closet door, spinning, backing up, turning on then off the blade brush over and over again. Meanwhile on the first floor - the Botvac 80 had already completed cleaning the closet, bathroom and bedroom and was back on the charger sleeping. That's when I had had enough!

I don't know what they did to the programming logic of the D80 versus the old XV and 80 models - but something is seriously wrong and it needs to be corrected. I checked for a firmware update on the Neato website - one was not available. Ever indication was that the D80 I received was up to date.

That's when I unplugged it, packed it back in it's box, and requested a return/refund from Amazon.

I had great experiences with both my XV and my Botvac 80 - I can not say the same about the D80 and definitely would NOT recommend this robot vacuum to anyone!

16 Months Later, Hardly Worth It!

Owned the D80 for over a year. Began having problems within a few months. Neato sent a replacement unit that also suffered problems. First, the dirt bin pops out while cleaning leading to an error message, "Put put dirt bin back in." Next, I have to move the docking station from room to room as the robot acts differently depending on where the station is. Often cleaning one room for 1/2 an hour and dying while hardly cleaning another area; or, has a tendency to get stuck under furniture. Next, it often occurs that there is an error, "Press okay to continue (3000)" to clean the laser sensors or power cycle the unit with no avail. Finally, with nothing impeding the path an error, "Please clear my path."

When it works, roughly 20% of the time then I am happy that it didn't f*** up again. However it hardly works without constant supervision which defeats its purpose. I am disappointed with my near $500 purchase, and would not recommend this product; it was trowing money at bad technology.

For wood floors it is easier to use a swiffer dry mop with a micro-fiber cloth bi-daily for three dogs in the house.

Great if you want something that lasts a few months

We've had the D3 for less than a year and now need to replace the batteries. Even though the unit is still under warranty. Customer service is horrible and frankly useless (tells us to watch a YouTube video of how to reset... After we've told them we've reset it 5 times already... I can Google thanks!). Super disappointed... also ruined the legs of our table when it would get stuck. It scratched the heck out of it, to the point the espresso-color legs show the real wood color beneath. Garbage.

Save yourself the hassle and buy a Roomba
